Mine goes in for 6k service next month so I'm reading with interest.

I'm working on the basis that servicing by Toyota will extended the warranty each time, so I think I'll let them select and put the oil in as I don't want to give them any reason not to honour the warranty.

I supplied my own oil as many other owners had had the experience of not having 0w-20 SP engine oil. “We always use the correct oil” they said, when I asked to see the bottle it was SN+. Unless they’ve had an update in supply I’ve not heard of anybody in the UK having Toyota put the correct grade oil in.

Did they give you any hassle with using your own oil?

The one dealer I tried with this gave me a load of crap about how it needs to be bought from a Toyota dealer or they won’t use it

Have filter and sump washer from torque GT proper Toyota part and they said they wouldn’t fit them

No, they had no problem with using my oil. I also had the diff oils changed (using their oils as they had the correct grade) at the same time which was pretty straight forward. It was Steven Eagell in Chelmsford. I think they’ve a few GRY owners going there so they know the car. Even understood I wouldn’t want them to wash it!

As far as Toyota’s view, page 153 of the owners manual states:

“Toyota recommends the use of “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil”. Another motor oil of matching quality can also be used.”

So as I read that there’s no issue as long as the oil is the correct rating.

This is the ongoing problem with the quality of different dealers to the handful that are helpful, understand, and work with you. Lauren posted earlier that RRG are using Fuchs/Millers (can't remember exactly which one, but the point is correct spec and not the Toyota GF-5)

I'm booked into the supplying dealer, Snows Exeter, for my annual service and they either don't know about the specific GR Four engine oil spec or are being deliberately evasive!

I'll be supplying my own oil.

Snows Honiton at least were up front about not being up to spec, so it was recall only for them and service at indy specialist

Toyota don't make oil. Mobil makes it for them and Toyota put their own name to it as do many products these days.
Be carefull not to get too paranoid over this. All garages will have at least one person trained to work on the GR models.
Sometime you just have to trust them and we can cause far more damage to a car than the garage. A car with the correct oil can still be wrecked by a bad / unsympathetic driver who mods it to death and drives it poorly.

Trust Toyota the manufacturer who specify the GF6 oil for their engine or the franchise dealers who don’t put the right spec in?
Out of interest how do you know that Toyota use mobil for the GR and which one ?

I didn't say the GR cars use Mobil. Toyota don't make their own oil they have had Mobil oil for many years re-branded as their own. Someone might find out who makes the oil for the GR cars. Purely a guess, I would expect this to also be mobil - probably one of their higher spec ones or it could be another make.
I saw my cousen two weeks ago who was a trained mechanic who recently retired as a long timeToyota workshop manager and I put this to him.
He has a £80k open top merc sports car and is into his big bikes (services / fixes bikes from all over the region due to his experience) and smiled at my question and said he serviced all his own with Toyota oil.
He asked me if I was tracking it as that is when you could buy another "better" make but everyday use mobil is a very good oil - so don't worry for normal use.
My conclusion is if you really push the engine then yes, get a top premium oils that are mentioned above but otherwise accept the Toyota oil. The salesman who sold me mine aslo bought a CP one himself and it is serviced at RRg alongside mine. I will ask him next week when I see him the question but I don't expect any concerns from him.

I think you missed the point there.
There have been unconfirmed rumours on bob is the oil guy regarding Toyota oil manufacturers for many years .I expect everyone knows Toyota don’t make their own.
No opinion has been expressed if it’s good or bad.
The point :-
When the GR is built in Japan it is filled with ilsac gf 6a which is an SP.
When it is serviced in the uk it is filled with ilsac gf5 or SN+ (and some haven’t even had that).
SP specs are better than SN+
Why are we getting a lesser spec than Toyota have written on the oil cap ?
Does it make a difference?
Would the afe extra they are using in UK make the spec for SP and they just haven’t submitted it?
No one knows but the diligent would like answers.
SP has better Lspi protection than SN+ and it is a concern for Toyota as the link shows.

I totally accept many owners do not care but obviously some do. In the link above from Toyota it lists lspi symptoms and a diagnosis flow which it appears from other threads some Toyota dealers can’t follow.

To add to that for clarity, I believe the ideal is SP Resource Conserving, which is mentioned both in the manual and the oil cap.

Why is it so hard to get hold of the correct spec OEM oil? The car has been out for 2 years now! I understand the chip shortage, but this is just bizarre. It’s the sort of service I would expect from Renault or Ford, but not Toyota.

Anyway…can anyone recommend a service centre dealership in South Wales? My nearest is FRF Swansea, they are a registered GR service centre (I know that doesn’t mean much), but if anyone has used them I would appreciate their experience.

I’ve used frf since having mine 18 months ago. I supplied my own oil the first time, but started a service plan so used theirs the second time
All good , waited with the car the first time and whilst a warranty claim, went for a walk and left it the second time. No road tests etc, made sure I’d washed it the day before so they didnt

Cheers Mark! I will book it in with them. Might source my own oil for this one too.

I think there are a few of us in the Swansea area, we should arrange a coffee meet at some point.

This is the exact point.

There was a post a month or so ago though that GF 6a was now available from some dealers, I'll still buy the ravenol personally
