wonder if all the cars in uk are sat with their sumps off...

Is that a polite way of asking if they are all sat behind a fence in Derby with their pans down

Hopefully they have the cam covers off them too. US forums suggest RTV from that is getting into the pickup aswell.

This is honestly my only concern with all of this. I don't want to have £31k tied up in something sitting in bits for months on end waiting for a fix and me having some crap courtesy car to drive round in.

I seen this one and it doesn’t concern me at all. Not great there is some RTV in there, but that isn‘t blocking much and the design would still allow oil to flow. Don’t understand why they need a new pick up though, dealer should just clean it.

One thing for sure if there is an RTV problem and Toyota aren’t onto it the “Claims Chasers” will be:

“Do You or did you own a GR86? , did the engine fail? Did Toyota make you pay? , call us right away on 0800 868686 , you could be owed thousands ££££ “

Well I was partly correct , the actual number is 844 928 - 443 (international charges may apply) but still think 0800 868686 is a good U.K. phone number

For what it’s worth I think Toyota and Subaru will be investing the engine failures, BUT as we know, they are not the best at communicating, particularly if it’s bad news , but don’t forget “THE GR86 SOLD OUT IN 90 MINUTES“ - because that’s good Toyota news

If Subaru engineers designed a ”5 sided box strainer” to ”catch“ RTV which had decided to “leave home”, which it does then why didn’t they incorporate a drain /inspection plug directly below the pick up tube , to be able to inspect and if required, clean said strainer without having to remove the pan They obviously expected RTV to break away , which it does

I’m guessing, but I doubt the engineers considered there would ever be enough RTV debris to block the strainer enough to reduce oil flow to terminal levels

All guess work but It may be that the engine failures are nothing to do with the oil flow , RTV blocking strainer and that the bearings were just made from the same metal as bZ4X wheel nuts/studs

I don’t get the point of dropping the oil pan yourself or anyone outside of the official Toyota network , certainly in the U.K. , as you have “tampered” with the car and “potentially“ created a headache with the warranty The use of RTV which will be “squeezed” out between the two mating surfaces sounds like a recipe for problems , being able to get a consistent bead of a certain diameter evenly applied around an irregular shape will be a highly skilled task Some tech who does that occasionally (or for the first time) has a high probability of getting it wrong and creating the same problem again. I‘d say It’s the sort of skill someone only acquires after A LOT of experience doing it repeatedly. A “traditional” preformed sump gasket sounds a much better long term solution

It must be on Subaru / Toyota radar now with all the US press and social media coverage , but expecting some form of communication from Toyota on the issue is a bit far fetched

looking at some of the removed sumps its like they put on plenty to actually get the sump to seal oil leak free...as if it actually would be better with a gasket!

i know on a lot of stuff we repair there are specifics on the size and placement of the sealant bead and of the actual sealer spec to use...

it seems like a very poor engine build process which is what is not expected these days...

A question for our GT86 owners thinking of @ZN8 , @Will300 etc , Wasn’t there a number of GT86 engine failures after the valve spring recall which may have been down to excess sealant applied to the engine covers by “technicians” during the rebuild

I’m guessing that applying the right amount of sealant to a joint is like plastering a wall , professionals make it looks easy but unless you have a lot of skill and experience (usually from years of practice and getting badly wrong in the early days) it’s not

On the other hand give me a new gasket, a torque wrench and a sequence in which to tighten them up I could probably do as good a job as the ”Master Tech“ but not as quickly

Yes there was. It's a similar issue, although as the RTV was applied to the front cover, it bypassed the pickup and went directly into the oil galleries.

Thanks @Will300 , thought I’d seen something along those lines. Did Toyota fix the engines FOC or was it a “nothing to do with us “ situation and owners left out of pocket

I think Toyota did fix the majority or atleast offer something towards fixing it. Although I can think of one or two exceptions. i.e. change of owner and the engine failed after like 10K miles, then they got left out of pocket.

Toyota normally aren't shy about recalls. If it needs doing they do it, unlike the VAG group. But it's not been released as such yet which is affecting things, at least here.
