Thought of opening a new topic on GR Yaris experiences on racetrack.
I know we have GR Zoo generic topic but felt we have enough model spesific track related talks.
Move to correct slot if this is not the right one admins!

Had my 3rd visit to racetrack 2 days ago.
This time at Alastaro Racing Circuit at Virttaa.

My previous experience was from last summer at more "ballsy" Ahvenisto track.
There the car felt too soft and difficult to be pushed. At Alastaro it felt much better.

The few takeaways from 2hrs visit are following
1) car has plenty of grip, it just needs to be requested. This applies to both mid corner and corner exit.
Stock suspension is tad soft but it works if you just take it to the limit. Respect the driving line and throttle input and car will turn nicely.
In corner exit I was almost always too late with throttle. With these LSD's and great driveline you can in practice jump on the throttle in apex and car will dig itself into exit nicely. Feels proper "animal" in that section, really different to anything else I've ever driven.

Last summer I wasn't that experienced with the car so I drove it too softly on track. this left the feeling that car is not that responsive or fun to drive. It is, you just need to challenge and master it.

2) Stock Brakes are seriously effective
Was braking way too early everywhere. Stock tires maybe caused this as it was difficult to sense if they were gripping or not, so needed to leave some marigin there, but overall very impressed on how it performed. Best lateral G's i got was 1.37g that is pretty impressive for a car with stock suspension and tires. With Semislicks and proper suspension it will be much higher so no wonder there can be oil feeding issues if G -forces go north of 1.5g and above..

3) My next uprgade to the racetrack would be..
Racing seat 100%
With stock seat is is really difficult to have a solid and exact steering input into corner, especially if driven hard.
With bucket seat you eliminate any movement you have and can concentrate on driving. So this would be my first handling improvement, prio any changes to suspensions or whatever.

Oil cooler.. ?
Noticed that oil temps rose to 120-130'C after one fast lap so didnt' push it any more that one fast at the time. If more track fun would be requested, I'd go easily with oil cooler as then temps would be more closer to normal temps. Water temp didn' t seem to rise that high (based on temp gauge in cluster) so maybe car was still in its operating window but didn't like to push any boundaries as it was a hot day (air temp 25'C, track temp maybe closer to 35-40'C).

Intake temps were between 32-43'C so Wagner IC had though job to manage - felt that some power was missing but no wonder as temps were that high.
With stockish snorkel WOT IAT gets easy 10'C above ambient. CACT not able to log for the time being.

All in all fun day.
Front camber worked well and car was quite responsive to drive.
Best time was 1:35.5 but felt that there is at least 2-3sec to be shaved with more solid corner entry speeds and driving lines. Then again, taking into account of the points given above didn't want to take it too close to its limit as the feeling is to be improved when in limit. Still behind friends best time by 10s but then again it is GT4 with semi slicks so kind of different game there. I believe Sub 1:30 would be doable with proper track setup.

ps. before us there was nice Lamborghini Huracan (?) Evo and Ferrari SF90 stretching their legs - really cool sounds!

Nice write up

Did you experiment with tyre pressures? I have my first track day coming up and not sure what to run.

Targetted around 2.1-2.2 hot - was okeyish. Haven't checked exactly what is recommended for PS4S or GR when driving hot laps but guessing factory recommended temps wouldn 't be too far off what is working. With Toyo R888 and race car went usually closer to 1.9-2.0 but that has stronger sidewalls.

I have to agree with the seat being a problem at the track, as the track heats and grip increases I find I cannot exploit the grip because I move too much. I am still thinking a Schroth harness will do the trick, still haven't found anywhere that will ship to Oz.

its not much movement that already confuses the reference points at turn in and braking. So much easier and more fun if you stay exactly in same place in the seat. It does not need to be many degrees off when you already miss 0.5m from the corner exit or apex and that can lead into problems if there's enough speed..
Leaving that on the table and you are already seconds away from the best times and most fun.

In low grip scenarios that is not so much of an issue as there you move less as G-forces are lower.

I've got a Schroth Rallye 3 Harness fitted to mine that I use on track with standard seats. Works really well.

btw does car imply in any way that engine is getting too hot, i.e. water or oil temp warning? I kept on gazing the oil temps and they stayed just below the orange part which I believe is still ok. Would guess engineers being that smart that they would put the car into a safe mode if temps rise too high.. just to protect the engine?

which app are you used?

I am holding hope for the QuickFit Pro so I can run a HANS device, that lets me run at a particular track. Renewed searching going on. Out of the US is doable but shipping is heinous.

Haven't experienced a warning but didn't kepp on racing above 125° oiltemp. I have had the intake at +55° before new intercooler and no warning there either. But on the other hand no power so probably dumping fuel and taking timing out aswell as protection.

With my new intercooler is never more than 10° above ambient even at 1.8bar. Oil is stil getting close to 120° even with a big cooler but 7600rpm and a lot more power over stock does that to an engine no matter cooler size. Still using 0-20 oil aswell.

Been to Alastaro a few times but not with my Yaris. Will try to go there in September with some friends if it goes by plan.🏁

Yep power generates heat so though one to avoid.. My AFR's were also rather low in track pulls (11.5 or below) so felt that engine definitely dumps more fuel to cool it.

Update on this, after much to-ing, quite a bit of lying, some fro-ing and more than a little bruxism I have ordered what should work... if it doesn't you will never hear about it and I will chase a buyer with a mk V goluf. Actually my mate has one so it will go to him. If all good will post pics and info in my build thread. For interest only of course since it wasn't designed for the gry etc etc etc.

Tested the boes seat console today and felt it gave much better support than stock seat so ordered one. More headroom and better support makes more fun at the limit!

My car has basically only done track days and driving to track days. 11k miles of it. Most of the UK ones, 5x nurburgring, 2 X spa.

I learned a few things, some address comments above.

1. It's a mega arrive and drive track car. It's why you see so many.

2) small geo changes make a big difference. It really needs a degree extra camber front and rear and some front toe out will help the turn in.

3) oil temps. You can actually run a bit of ducting from the lower blanking plate to the oil cooler. I run in mid 20.C days and it only gets to 113 max now. A dedicated oil cooler is not great if the oil is not hot.

4) suspension is great for everything but long fast corners or the ring with the camber and humps. I literally bottom out the suspension through blanchimont at spa which is seriously unnerving when you take a bit much curb! I run BC coilovers and they are perfect. Not too stiff, get a bit lower to the ground and you can cornerweight it.

5) brakes. As mentioned totally standard works well. Obviously stick good fluid in and flush 100ml out of the caliper after each track day. OEM pads are fine for most, will do 2 or 3 days and cost 70 quid. I've tried most pads I reckon and I find myself sticking with the @EBC Brakes RP1s. They are like OEM +. More bite, better modulation, deal with temps totally fine, don't make excessive heat, last easily 3x longer than OEM (which makes them great value) and bonus points for not being dusty or noisy.

6) seats and stuff, absolutely. If you do it often or drive it near 10/10ths then seats, harness and Hans is a bit of a no brainer if you or anyone around you values your life. @SW Motorsports do a really good value cage and nice seat delete that again keeps it OEM+ along with all the seat mounting hardware.

7) people say about the diffs overheating. I find this is only the case on standard tyres. I run 255/35 on track and never once had it. Heat wrapping the bits near the box and diff can't hurt.

8) temps generally. It gets hot! Remove your engine cover, open the bonnet after sessions, buy the cooling undertray, run water wetter and slightly over fill it, intercooler sprayer makes a big difference on hot days.

9) Tyres. Mps4s are a lovely road tyre but will go off with heat on track and have a soft sidewall. Goodyear PSS are much better suited to track work and will last twice as long and not turn blue and lose all their grip. Nankang offer decent performance for a good price in their nsr2 and ar1 ranges depending on what you're after. You can work out pressures by looking at the rollover marks.

10) take the time to learn how to get the most from it. It doesn't drive like a rwd or fwd on track, you find yourself doing a lot of your work mid corner playing with the throttle and trail braking to get the torque moving about. Love it!

These CG locks are good if you use normal belts

Also in regards to temps you can get it all up on your screen to keep an eye on if you do enough faffing about. Need an android phone, OBD2AA app and a decent OBD dongle
