1447 GR86s on the road plus 59 SORN
Grand Total of 1506 registered in UK
(one more GR86 than last report)

Bit sad that 59 cars are just sat there doing nothing.
I don’t use mine during the winter but I’m defo not leaving it in the garage during the summer. Not sure these cars are going to appreciate enough to warrant just having them sat there not being driven. Strange folk out there.

Are you sure they're just sat in garages, not damaged and currently unable to be used?

They won't appreciate more than general stocks.

Pretty sure most of them will be in collections due to the rarity of the car.

I saw an article in Carbuzz the other day that showed the sales figures last year and YTD for this year in the USA. Snapshot below.

I know they have 5 times the population, but it amazes me the amount of performance cars they buy compared to us. Okay, the GR86 was always restricted here and manufacturers have the ev / co2 mandate to consider, but wow. 5 times the people, but probably 30 times the number of GR86's when you consider from 2022 onwards, plus the gen2 BRZ.

I love my 86, but I don't see why people think it's special enough to put in a collection. If someone can afford to collect classic cars and not drive them, I'd expect them to go for something fancy.

Agree with that. It’s an iconic car and a future classic for sure but not a money spinner.
Obviously plenty of people out there with £30k just burning a hole in their pocket so it can sit in a collection. Would be better locking it in a high interest bank account.

Do the listed number of registered cars get updated for write-offs / scrapped cars, out of interest? There's been a few on Marketplace/eBay over the past 18 months being parted prior to scrap, so the true "on the road" number will be ever so slightly less, I guess.

Interestingly the number SORN (manual) does fluctuate suggesting some owners are declaring SORN over winter then putting them back on the road in the summer months.

We’re seeing it now with the Yaris plenty of people with £30k who tucked them away didn’t use them but also didn’t bother to keep up the servicing. Going to be a tough sell.

I tend to barely use it in winter due to salt (despite having protection applied to the underside), I may be a bit over the top in this, but I do try to take out occasionally when there's no salt to keep things moving. Cars that don't move for prolonged periods can suffer.

I’ve locked my cars away for the winter for years. Never had an issue.
Will sit from November to March without doing anything. Worst thing you can do is start it up occasionally and then turn it off. That does more damage to the engine than just leaving it to sit.

We would SORN ours over winter as it's garaged and not driven but unfortunately it's service date is early January so has to come out for that. I am thinking of bringing the service forward a few months so that we can service and then tuck her up for 6 months each year.

Mine was due at the end of December. I bought mine forward to November to get rid of the issue. May do it in October this year and leave it there.

I've been slowly moving my servicing. The goal will be to eventually get it to first week of September. That way all my vehicles can be serviced and potentially MOT'd the same week. Book the week off work to get it done, sort any issues and enjoy them.

If i was garaging it over the winter, I'd declare it SORN. The way tax works now I dont see why you wouldn't.
I agree. I’ve got a few cars and bikes but it’s too pricey to have them all taxed, especially my old Z4. I SORN what I’m not using and get the refund cheque, I’m not giving the government any more money to waste than I have to!
