If you still want to own the car, then surely there won't be any inspection, you'll just want the money to fit an alarm?
I plan to keep it, I just wonder what complications there would be trying to return a car that is no longer standard in this situation.

I did not mention returning the vehicle at all, the ombudsman provided me with these as options as they believe i still have the right of refusal usually used at the point of handover.

I can only guess that this is because Toyota should have made it known to me about the spec changes at that point, and provided me the choice of taking or leaving.

This isn't final, and I imagine Toyota will reject this resolution since this is included. Or fear a free return loophole.
Is this through the financial ombudsman, as returning the vehicle is the only option with them?

I should have time next week to attempt the cobra install. Mine is supplied precoded by cobra for the GT86.
Did you get round to trying to fit the Cobra alarm? If so, does it all 'work' as it should? 🤔

Still haven't got around to it!

Currently on hols in SE Asia, will be back in November and time permitting will give it a go when I get back.

I sent a complaint to the ombudsman for the missing alarm on my GR86 and after about 9 months the dealership reached out offering £200 compensation. I declined and asked the ombudsman to take their fair decision - arguing that the installation of any decent system will be more expensive....

Will update on the progress

Got a reply from the ombudsman that toyota gb now offer to retrofit an alarm system and which dealer i want to take it to....I have 5 days to reply but not sure I want someone who don't know what they're doing working on my car !!

Presumably, this would be free of charge - so could other owners on here go to dealers and ask for a similar fitting, or would we have to complain to the Ombudsman first of all I wonder? Thoughts welcome.

yes FOC as far as I understand it. I haven't responded yet....but with this retrofit option I gather it will now be more difficult for those who were pushing to get a higher compensation amount. It may well be due to the number of complaints, they thought it would now be more cost effective to reinstall an alarm than to negotiate with each and every one of us who complained?

It's interesting when in all previous corresponce, Toyota GB claimed it was not technically possible to retrofit the alarm and hence we had to take it or leave it. Now a sudden change in position, but no mention what needs to be dismantled in my car to install it.

Not sure whether it's only offered to those who complained but I wouldn't be surprised for Toyota GB to want to limit it to that.

Perhaps you can share the email address you used so that all interested can write to the same contact point. My car was a cash purchase with GT86 trade-in directly through Toyota UK rather than a dealer.

I decided to accept the original offer from Toyota of £200 several months ago. Whilst I was annoyed about the lack of alarm it doesn’t appear to have affected my insurance and I was a bit dubious about having an aftermarket system fitted. I guess the latest systems are far more advanced but I didn’t really want visible sensors in the car and having the wiring loom spliced into. But it’s good news that Toyota are offering that option to those who want an alarm 👍🏻

Just to update on my case.

I am cash buy so claimed via the motoring ombudsman. The first offer from Toyota in November was for £250 which I promptly refused. Then within a few days they increased the offer to £500 on 26/11/2024, which I accepted. Still have to see the payment but its only been a few weeks since acceptance.

The main content of the offer:

The business said: "We are sorry to learn the customer did not accept our offer of goodwill, as a further offer we can provide a total of £500 as goodwill to the customer. We hope this will bring this issue to a close and restore the customers faith."

Now to find time to fit the Cobra add on alarm!

TUK have offered £500 compensation without having to go through the ombudsman, they also mention Toyota do not have an approved alarm/accessory that can be fitted to the GR86 and our Approved Centres would not be able to fit a non-genuine part. Therefore, we cannot support the cost of a non-genuine part or accessory and fitment as we would not be able to advise which brand or alarm can be fitted.

Take it! I wish I got to that stage so quickly. I think they knew that if they didn't pay out now, you would go ombudsman anyway and waste their time and get to same result.

At least they got some common sense now. Nice payout for Xmas!

My car was pre-registered by the dealer in dec 2023 before I bought it in Feb 2024 so thinking that as technically the second owner I won’t be able to claim against TUK - what do you think?

no harm spending 5mins writing an email and giving it a go.

Did so over my morning coffee. I did speak to the Toyota Online rep about this issue in September 23, when finalising my payment, so it will be interesting to see the response.
