GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Your 3rd photo made me think about an old duvet that needs to be chucked out, maybe I should give that a go :) One less item for landfill?

😅 Does look like that, my neighbours must think I'm nuts, I'll add it to the mod list.
  • Cat back exhaust
  • Ducktail spoiler
  • TRD dampers
  • 10.5 tog duvet
Great effort @ZN8 that must have been quite a mission!
It was, would recommend a few yoga sessions before clambering around the back of an 86 for a day.

Oooft, nice work, but way too much effort for these old bones - I don't use the radio whilst driving so I'll search out my custom made motorcycle ear plugs instead if it comes to it ... Ya wha? Eh? 🗣️

Fitted my k&n lifetime pollen filter, the old one was properly minging, really easy job

Passo Pordoi in Italy, 7pm, no traffic. Genuinely the most fun I have had in this car, despite driving at 6 tenths at a push, tired from a day of hiking, no track modes on, a bone stock car on all seasons, filled with camping gear.

What a damn car this car is, and there's so much more capability that I wasn't interested in drawing out tonight. Few more days in the hills before life back in Blighty beckons but man is this car a treat out in these hills!

Ive recently stuck some sound deadening in the back of the car. It's made a noticeable difference, no tyre roar from the back now, I do need to do the doors as that's the biggest source of noise now.

I used 4mm silent coat CLD on the panels. 10mm closed cell silent coat isolator foam layered over the CLD, I stuffed some left over 25mm acoustic insulator matting in the cavity. Then on the back of the door cards 35mm silent coat absorber which should address any airborne noise that does come through.

Finally I stuck some 42oz insulation wool under the rear seats, it's a natural material, the car smelt of sheep for a few days :ROFLMAO: seems like alot but apart from the CLD the materials I've used are light. Totally weight added was 8.5kg.

Hi Matt
Great effort on the sound deadening, Im intending to do the same as the road noise is one of the key detracters from the 86, but how do you know where to put the sound deadening? I looks like patches on the rear arches for example so wondering if there is any science to it?

Also what are the TRD dampers like? I hear on the GRY upgrading the dampers can really improve ride quality while not losing any sporty effect is this the TRD effect or is it more handling and ride height focused?

Thanks for your help, I've decided while the 86 has some areas that bug me (throttle mapping and road noise) Im going to give it a go to enhance it to my liking.

I'll be impressed if they let you go sideways have been spoken to many times for safe oversteer and even banned once in my Skyline. I avoid track days because of this sadly.
Have you been to Angelsey?

They don't mind at all, I was sideways pretty much every lap at "Rocket" - no problems whatsoever.

They were ok at Spa too (any excuse to share my fave gif)

Snetterton however have a "no drifting" sign they put up for you.... allegedly.

Talking of Trackdays, one of out group had a shunt on the same day, if anyone is interested. A few shots of the GR in action just before "the event".
I always cringe when seeing video of me!

We crashed the RX8! Big oops out on track at Anglesey Circuit

Ms Fox doesn't passenger in my car THAT often .........

Further discussion reveals that it is the synthesised engine note that she is referring to (yes mine is still switched on cos I quite like it so sue me etc.).

I was lucky here, my sound was diabled prior to initial collection and I'd anounced before we got home adn stopped for lunch that I will need an exhaust.

After much umming and ahhing I ordered the Apex'i and commented I'd gone for the sensible quieter one, she said "if you are spending money on noise get the louder one", so I cancelled and ordered the HKS instead.

@Swizzle was that your OEM filter? - it looks like the Mann one with teh built in activated carbon. Mine was a rubbish paper affair, I upgraded to one like yours.

The aim is to get 50% or more coverage to effective deadening the panel. A lot of the size and shape of what you fit will be determined by all the ‘furniture’ around the panel, the likes of clips, brackets wiring etc and also being economical with your material, you don’t want to end up with loads of wastage, so some of those shapes are just leftovers. I tried keeping the material as large as possible so it’s more effective.

I used a metal roller to help with adhesion, but I did also use it to lightly tap the panels to see how they sounded. The most difficult area was the rear quarter, I managed to get a long sheet wrapped right around the wheel well, I was pretty much up to my shoulder getting in there.

I deliberately avoided doing too much in the boot area as its well isolated from the cabin anyway. I didn’t want the extra weight, not to mention I’m trying to get rid of the bad noises and keep the good ones (CTEC exhaust).

The TRD dampers are the strut dampers (sorry not suspension!) Being an Engineer, curiosity got the better of me, the are so unique, I was hopeful that they would dampen out some of the resonance generated from the front end.

Unfortunately, they did nothing for the resonance, I’ll need to ditch the PS4s to solve that. They did make a subtle difference elsewhere though, the car feels a little more fluid on turn in and when loading up the suspension when cornering, gives you more confidence I’d say. I noticed less shudder through the chassis when you hit bumps, its most notably when you hit a sequence of bumps/undulations, it settles quicker. Fensport sell them for £900, are they worth that? Absolutely not, I had them shipped over from Blackhawk for £580, are they worth that? Maybe, but I wouldn’t rush to buy them, but that price is much more acceptable, especially when compared to the TRD strut brace, which is £300 for effectively a piece of fishing rod mounted between your strut towers.

Amazing info thanks!
I'll get ordering some sound deadening as think that will help significantly on the motorway.
Interesting you mention the TRD strut dampers, I got so hacked off with the resonance I just removed the stock struts to the bulk head completely, it didnt remove the noise as much as I hoped but it removed a very irritating and horrible resonance that I couldnt not hear, it also improved secondary ride quality so its less fidgety but maybe its lost 5% of its turn in feel.

Im considering and exhaust and read on here the CTEC is getting good feedback as its UK market design, Im not wanting to sound like a boy racer (or how my Punto did in 1999!) but the stock noise of 'angry sewing machine' is very un sporty (disconnecting the fake noise maybe one of the best things Ive ever done to a car!). Assume there isnt resonance and drone from the CTEC? But sounds good when you open it up?

I want to fit a proper oil cooler bat can't see a kit I like yet.
Have you considered an oil water cooler? I.e Mocals laminova coolers. They are expensive but I think they are a better design than air oil coolers. Less space, less pressure drop, no concerns about over cooling, quicker oil warm up.

Yes, but like the factory one I think ones like that aren't big enough, and are a bit of a packaging, double plumbing nightmare.

I like the Jackson Racing Dual Radiator/Oil Cooler as it should do the job, without hacking bits of trim up, or getting in the way of a potential charge cooler going Forwards.

Greddy also have an interesting idea which is an inline coolant cooler that you place before the factory oil cooler. but that still has the disadvantages of an external heat exchanger

Here is a list of the material I used;

Sound Insulation Wool Felt - 42oz | Fabric UK
Insulation under the back seats (can also be used as a large mat in the boot, I have one cut out in the shed, if I go on a long journey and I want less exhaust I can pop this under the boot mat, but I haven’t tried it to yet to see if it actually works)

Silent Coat Extra 4mm - 12 Sheet Pack – Sound Deadening Shop
CLD (Constraint Layer Damping) sheet applied to the chassis

Silent Coat Isolator 10mm Large Sheet – Sound Deadening Shop
Applied over the CLD sheet

Silent Coat Absorber 35mm - 2 Sheet Pack – Sound Deadening Shop
1 sheet per rear quarter trim card/panel/thing

amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Wallpaper-Roller-Painting/dp/B091TQKSP9

Might be worth getting some Isopropyl alcohol to spritz on the panels to remove any residue before applying the CLD, would recommend keeping the doors open though. 50/50 mix with water should do it.

No nasty resonance from the CTEC setup, you always know it’s there, but it doesn’t dominate the driving experience, I’m a fussy b*stard, this is the goldilocks exhaust for me (appreciate everyone has different tastes though!) more detailed info and review in this thread.

Took it for its first year service today (that’s come around quickly… 🫣) at Steven Eagell Letchworth, who kindly scuffed the hell out of the interior plastics, wrenched the handbrake into the ceiling and forgot to stamp the service book. Fortunately the scuffs have all cleaned off.

Had a nice chat whilst waiting with a fellow GR86 owner (whose name I didn’t catch, so apologies if you’re on here) who was also having a first service done. Always lovely to meet a like minded petrolhead!

Oh, and I fitted the new Milltek the other day, that I ordered in a typically weak willed moment at the PistonHeads Annual Service a few weeks ago.

It’s raucous on cold start, but quickly settles down - in fact I’d say it’s on the subdued side of what I’d like. Hopefully it’ll find more of a voice when it carbons up a tad.

It however definitely makes driving the car more smoothly, easier! Being able to hear subtle RPM changes and blip the throttle more accurately means achieving a flow is much more within reach.

I haven't thanks for the tip and perhaps next time I'm considering a trackday I will email ahead to check. Seems like some are more sensible. Gives me hope!

Thanks but I've ordered the Carmate one now...I did look at some suede ones but I think leather might be better for cleaning.
Arrived today, which is pretty impressive considering I only ordered on Friday and it came from Japan. Handy, because it means I can test it on my commute this week.

Wasn't expecting much more than just a pad wth some double sided tape but to be fair, it's pretty nice quality. The lower part is plastic and moulded to the shape of the centre console, fitted with pre-attached Velcro strips rather than just 3M, so you can remove it easily if needed. Height feels just right for resting my left arm with a loose grip on the wheel when cruising. Only downside is the stitching is red rather than silver like the rest of the interiors, but I'll live with that for the price.
