GR86 Best induction kit for airflow?

@unrealpatrik - just had another check on the fitment of mine. Managed to push it a little closer to the front bumper so the snorkel pokes protrude into the heatshield a little better. Closed the bonnet and can't see any alignment issues. I also put some dabs of grease on each corner of the seal and they transferred onto the underside of the bonnet, so I think it's sealing better

However it's a good thing I had another check because annoyingly, the self adhesive heat wrap had started to peel off and was very close to contacting the AC pulley. I stuck it back on but I will have to keep an eye on that. I might even buy some better stuff online or something and wrap the entire box, they don't really give you enough for full coverage.

Also, I screwed in the PCV valve as far as I could before it cracked l but it was still showing a lot of thread.
Which part was this? I didn't see any problems fitting mine, but I think I better check again in case mine has cracked too without me realising?

The 90 angle connector for the PCV hose that screws into the port on the new intake pipe. You could screw it in for a full couple of turns before it went tight, but there was still a lot of thread exposed which made me worry perhaps it was meant to screw all the way in. Perhaps not though.

@unrealpatrik don't know if this helps with your bonnet alignment, but if you check the bolt on the right hand side of the heat shield, attaching it to the support bracket, you can see the hole is elongated allowing for a little vertical adjustment. I was tinkering with it again tonight to see if raising that corner of the box slightly might help the intake snorkel seat a little better. It didn't, but when I closed the bonnet I could see what you mean...it was ever so slightly raised on that side. So I slackened the bolt and lowered the shield again, and the bonnet alignment was spot on again. Maybe you could try the same?

I really appreciate you come back to this issue. I will try it soon hopefully (Thursday probably) and report back.

Meanwhile I found a photo, where it is clearly visible. It is probably exaggerated due to the contrast of white paint and black seals between the bonnet and the bumper. But once I see it, I cannot unsee it back 😂

The heatshield was already mounted at the lowest point unfortunately. But I am glad that I re-fitted everything... As I was removing the heatshield I realized the heat tape was loose and very very close to the accessory belt. I just removed the heat tape for now and will monitor intake temps. I cannot really say I am happy with the K&N quality...

Yes, I'm glad I got it for the price that I did, but even so, it could be better quality.
The thing is, this is the only intake I've heard so far which actually has a noticable improvement over stock.

Washed the car last night then gave the heatshield another check...the heat reflective sheet had started peeling off again, this time from underneath :/ I got annoyed and ordered a roll of generic stuff from Amazon. Took the whole lot out today, pulled off the rest of the wrap. Degreased the whole outside of the box in case it was due to my poor installation, then applied the new wrap.

To be honest, I'm not sure if this new stuff will be as effective; it's reflective, but not as thick as the stuff K&N sent. However, I'm hoping the fact that I've managed to get better coverage with this (basically the whole back, bottom and side which faces the engine is now covered) will make up for it. Also, the central portion of it, running down the back, underneath and to the front, is all one sheet, so hopefully less chance of it peeling off. K&N supplied two separate sheets to cover that area, so there was a seam where they had to overlap, which is where it peeled away. Their stuff might have been a bit thicker, but not much point if it just falls off :/

Also, following a tip from a US owner, I passed a long cable tie through the seal around the intake pipe. Was able to tighten that and improve the seal against the pipe itself. Still not perfect, but miles better than it was.

And finally, @unrealpatrik, you were right...I was able to screw the PCV pipe in almost all the way now that the pipe has been on the car and gone through a few heat cycles.

To be honest, I'm a little annoyed at having to do all this remedial work. It's only the fact that it seems to be the only intake which actually sounds better which is making me keep it.

Thanks for the tips.

Still waiting for mine from K&N. Hopefully second week of July.

When you get it, I would try and mitigate the problems we've had. Take some time to throughly degrease the metal of the box before applying the wrap, and perhaps let it sit for a while before putting in the car so the adhesive has time to cure a bit. No gaurantee that it will keep it from peeling, but perhaps it might help.

I'm still waiting for other solutions, especially seeing all this hassle. I nearly ordered the HKS pipe that retains the bladder but it's still £291 plus postage on RHDJapan which is still a lot for a bit of pipe. Still cheaper than UK suppliers at £440!

Agree poor show from KN, I'll need to check mine too.
Wonder if there's some warranty claim that KN could provide some stickier heatshield?

If I'd bought it from the UK, I would probably kick up a bit more of a fuss. But for the sake of a 10 quid roll of heat wrap (which seems to be holding) and a cable tie, I'll just let it be. Every other option appears to be much more expensive with nowhere near the improvement in noise, so I'll live with it.

Saw this video but it seemed a bit useless and the top comment summed it up. Like most of thier videos they don't really show the parts in detail, they breeze through the install so fast you can't learn much from it and then there's no objective analysis, nor even much attempt at showing us how it sounds...and really that's the most important part, as pretty much no intakes are going to do anything apart from improve noise (without a tune at least).

I'm sure it'll be some very nice pieces of carbon fibre but if it's £1300+ I'd struggle to justify it. It would be nice to hear some driving inside the car from their video.

That's a bit better, although more internal clips would be good....the short one I heard there sounds like it still has the ASC turned on.
Still....very hard to stomach that price at the moment. More than most catbacks :o
