You could consider this to be a very thinly-disguised attempt to elicit congratulations from my beloved fellow GR owners

I have been offered a new job, which is a very significant uplift in terms of salary compared with my current job.

In the past, this would have led to some immediate thoughts about a new car. I'd have been straight on to Autotrader. I've done this before. In the past, new jobs/promotions have very quickly resulted in a vehicle change. Even when I'd owned my existing vehicle for a short space of time and was pretty happy with it.

What is telling this time around is that I have absolutely no desire to change my car. None at all.

This has even prompted my august and venerable partner to comment that I hadn't broached the subject of a new car - "I thought you'd start going on about Porsches again". So I am in the good books, for a change.

At least until the Jaeger-LeCoultre is purchased anyway...
 
Congratulations on the new job!

Senior management at my employer discussed salary benchmarking this week, I can't say I was impressed by the answers...

Will the new watch be similarly thinly veiled? 😉

Congratulations! I'm sure it's well deserved, looking forward to you buying us all a drink at Caffeine & Machine when we meet up to celebrate your promotion (this is surely part of the plan when you arranged for us all to meet up there?) and to see the new watch that you're already thinking about treating yourself to! ;)

I'd struggle to work out what I'd replace the GR86 with - the Alpine A110 should be an obvious option, but didn't really do anything for me when I drove one (and it's auto only). The Lotus Emira is stupid money now they've increased the price, plus there are lots of horror stories of build quality issues etc., and even without that, I just don't desire one enough to make me try to use man maths to work out how I could afford one. Porsche have made some lovely cars over the years, but I'd rather something of theirs from the past, rather than anything newer, and then you have the bother of not having the peace of mind of a manufacturer warranty (and especially not a 10 year warranty).
Maybe you need a second GR86 in a different colour, so you can decide which one to drive depending on the watch you're wearing on the day, as I hear Toyota Online are struggling to get rid of the things now...

Nice choice. I love the Master Control Calendar series and it's on my list of 'potentials'. However, I'm a bit of a Rolex Fanboi and my latest aquisition (GMTII - 126713) has just arrived at my AD and is being held for me until I can get across next week. Although a bit 'marmite' I'm a sucker for a nice two-tone; it must be the 80s dell-boy/boy-racer still lurking somewhere inside this aching middle aged body ;)

and the potential new kitchen/bathroom/extension your good lady may well be pondering in light of you not eyeballing a flat 6 engined replacement from Stuttgart.
 
Don’t change vehicle but make an addition…. Perhaps a nice little soft top Boxster GTS 4.0. A bit flash for the office car park so an excuse to keep the Toyota “costs the same as a Yaris cross don’t you know”. You don’t want them thinking you don’t need the cash come bonus time.

Having just finished the break in period and got to enjoy/experience the car across the rev range on some fantastic roads. I too would struggle to think what I would replace it with. I’d love an Alpine A110, but it’s a sizeable price increase, F-Types are too fat, Caterham/Morgans too compromised for a daily driver, Supra I found too cramped, already have an MX5, didn’t want another hot hatch, and Porsche can get to f**k after they were pretty arsey with me when I enquired about a Spyder RS. So really it would be between an Alpine or a Lotus (Evora or Emira) but all options would be more expensive and or a few years older.

Personally feel like the 86 is in a pretty good sweet spot at the moment. Still not sure if it’s a long termer but I think their brilliant.

Curiously I turned down a 6 month consultancy role with current employer at a start up new site due to it putting too many miles on the 86!! :ROFLMAO:

Im not far of 10k miles and it is getting better and better!! ;)
530 am on Friday going to work through the back roads it was misty...and it felt like someone had fitted an SC overnight!! :ROFLMAO:
Oh..and as for miles Im good for 18K a year and the 6 months would have put another 10k on at least!! :ROFLMAO:

Agreed!

Someone at the next table along for breakfast out at the weekend was talking about how they were having to fly Ryanair to avoid putting miles on their Ferrari. I thought that was a sad state of affairs.

Rowan Atkinson piled the miles onto his McLaren F1, considered one of the most used examples, and he managed to crash it a few times too. He sold it for £8m.

It’s a different world though in that bracket of car. Adding a story to a car like that increases it’s value.

If it’s a tick box exercise to own a Ferrari or a Lambo then, buying an affordable mid mileage example and babying the mileage (1/2k a year) for a couple of years whilst lower mileage cars catch up, means that you can get more of your money back out of it.

A lot of people can’t justify chucking away 20k+ of value on a car by putting mega miles on it.
