GR86 Would you flip your GR86?

I wouldn’t flip the car, I have ordered it to run until a cayman gt4 arrives, the GR 86 will be traded on next year when it eventually shows up . But I would offer the car to anyone at that point for the trade in value.

I originally put the deposit down as I believed the 12 week lead time that the website was saying (I thought that as it was a limited run Toyota / Subaru would have been ahead of the game a little). The plan was to have it whilst I wait for my Emira to turn up, which could be next Spring. So the GR made sense as a stop gap, and nearer the time I could decide if it was worth pulling out of the Emira for.

Roll on nearly 3 weeks and talk of the car not showing up until next year, and I'm starting to think I will flip it if I know what the situation with the Emira is. The experience has been really deflating so far, so I'm really not sure what I will do when the car finally shows up, but the way it's trending at the moment, I would be very tempted to flip it.

I may 'flip' it for an auto one, I got some physical limitations that if I can't overcome them then need must apply

I am equally enthusiastic about GR86 given the end of ICEs sports cars in a few years (hated test driving Taycan, the claimed best EV sports car, which wouldn't have been that expensive via company car scheme). Besides the 90 mins sell-out made GR86 purchase all the more special. That said, in my view, the way economy is heading towards a slow down coupled with a high interest rate scenario, it would be very unlikely that people will be willing to pay significant premium for a sports car in the months to come. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if some buyers consider pulling out once the income squeeze starts to show towards the end of year/early 2023. Sorry for sounding gloomy in the otherwise ecstatic forum.

Finding a 6AT may be a hard task , there won’t be many about , using 400 as the best guess for U.K. cars and 6.4% being 6AT from @beorg data that’s only 25/26 in the U.K. making them extremely rare. 😉Those folk who have chosen the 6AT will have done so because that’s the transmission they want 👍

⚠️PS folks this is NOT about reopening the 6MT/6AT debate. ⚠️

As initially tempting as it sounds to flip and make a profit. I'm hoping the GR86 is the 'goldilocks' car that will solve an ongoing car dilemma I've had since selling my Mk1 MX5 a few years ago. That was a third car for us and since then we have been looking for a car that would allow us to run just two cars. One that my wife could use during the week for work and as a bit of fun for me at the weekend.

So for the last few years we've came close to buying or at least seriously considered a variety of cars. These include a 30th Anniversary Mk4 MX5 RF which I didn't fit in, a MINI JCW, a Golf GTI performance, a Porsche Cayman and an Up GTI. For one reason or an other they all fell short and in theory the GR86 offers a tantalising mix of desirability, cost to buy and run all year round, light, RWD, manual, 10 year warranty, modern safety and most importantly I actually fit in it at 6ft 2" which has also been an issue. Added to this list we can now add relative rarity and minimal depreciation.

All of the above reasons mean that I would need to think long and hard about flipping this for a few thousand pounds and barring any unforeseen circumstance I think I'll be making the most of that 10 year warranty.

I dare say the limited numbers will make these more valuable than the Yaris.

Shots fired.
You could be right. I can see it you know

However some people don’t get the GR86 (insert power based comment) where as the Yaris is maybe wider accepted. The reviews made the madness, remains to be seen

Back to topic a lot of people were flipping the Yaris but then easily jumping back on the order book, albeit waiting a year or 2. So making some money in exchange for waiting a bit longer.

This is different to the GR86 where there’s a good chance you won’t get another shot, personally I think most will hang on to it. Unless there is a car that’s £6-8k more than a GR86 you wanted but couldn’t afford, but you had to go for the GR86, why would you flip?

Inevitably some people will flip the GR86, but if there are only 400ish most people who got an ORCA are buying it because it’s the car they want, enough power for their needs , and definitely the last of its kind, 10/11 year warranty, low service costs. Time will tell 🤔

Autos will be rarer so will be worth more, right?

You joke but the demand of autos is going up. More and more people are taking auto only driving tests and what with electric cars being 2 pedal don't be surprised if a rwd auto sports car is in great demand.

That's a lot of dollarydoos.

Still not flipping. I can't even think how much it would need to realistically go before I considered it as I'd always need a car to upgrade to.

I'd be tempted to flip if it was 5K or more over list price... reasons as follows...

- I have 2 f##ked knees from a motorcycle accident around 10 years ago, it wasn't so much of a problem in my 20's but now in my 30's having become older and rounder I get aches in my knees, especially clutch side so dare I say I maybe tempted by an automatic.

- With my initial deposit back plus an extra 3k in profit, plus the 2k I was going to spend on a wrap to make it stand out more, I could put a decent deposit down on a 2.0 Supra Auto, with the best deal on Carwow today that would put the monthly's at £282 in Lightning Yellow on 1.9% APR.

- The 2.0 litre supra gets better MPG and my mileage is steadily increasing with the new job, better MPG means more money to put towards Supra running costs each month when the fuel claim comes back (i know its not a tit for tat thing, but on paper it looks like a win).

- Finally for me, and this is probably the biggest point. I feel so utterly deflated with the buying process it's unreal. And after my conversation with the guy from Toyota yesterday I feel even more deflated regarding his attitude to me and my call, it's amazing what you overhear when people think they have put themselves on mute! I'm still in two minds as to whether I raise an official complaint. I built this car up in my mind so much, it was the total package for a car lover now I'm worried I'm going to be utterly disappointed.

I am leaning towards a supra too if I could get a deal similar to what you described.

Oh no, that’s not good. What was said? I haven’t had a call yet but sent a couple of emails as there is a genuine concern on my order as Beadles already applied for finance for me, a bit of faffing on order day means I have two cars showing on the website. But not even had a holding reply. Very poor customer service. Would rather have a dealer involved that I could speak to.

I'm going to keep hush on the details until I decide what to do, I don't want to risk skewing people's view if they are having a good experience or be accused of whipping up a frenzy or anything like that, plus it would de-rail the thread.

I would 100% have preferred to go through a dealer.

Based on your signature it looks like you've ordered a Supra already?
