Hi, no doubt this has been done this time last year but I wanted to see what the latest recommendations are for wheels and tyres?

Im happy to buy a cheap set of wheels (steel would be fine) and winter tyres rather than swapping tyres over each season, but looking online for steel wheels or second hand wheels seem to draw a blank when trying to match the stock fitments and offsets etc.

Also happy with 17" wheels to make the whole package cheaper.

What have you done or bought that works?

If it were me I'd take the opportunity to rock the rally look in winter. I think it looks great.

These are Sparco Terras in 17x7.5 et48 buying new wheels probably isn't the cheapest option though

Used Subaru wheels might be good. Usually loads on auction sites.

I found this web page useful when I was doing the same a year ago:

If you do go that way, check, check and check again!

I ran winter tyres on a sports car before and find they're just too compromised for the kind of weather we normally get this time of year.

They squirm about way too much and braking is severely compromised on days when the temperatures get above 10c which they do quite often do in the UK.

All seasons are the way to go. The tyre reviews website has some great reviews including:

Yep, and CC2s overlap with traditional winter tyres quite a lot. Are they anywhere near as sporty as Goodyear Supersports? no but should still make for an enjoyable drive given how direct the chassis is. If UHP all seasons were available I’d have probably given them a try.

Those wheels are making me want to swap tyres just to try and justify them! :) I've seen white/gold/black but not the grey in the top picture, that looks spot on and I'd be tempted! Being a silver car I am not sure white wheels would work on it even though they look even more rally!

You're right, I drove a Focus RS once in torrential rain and with winters on it was borderline dangerous, no idea what tyres they were but they were not suitable for wet!
A/S tyres would be the one I would be going for, UK roads low temps and the occasional icy sections rather than alps and highlands snow.

Volkswagen steels fit, these are 16s from a new beetle, avon all weathers, winter 22 was horid so i got these for 23, which wasn’t that badView attachment 32844
Quite like that look too, something quite european about the steel wheels. Bet the ride and noise is improved on 16s and softer tyres? Good to know VW is an option, that is a big market for 2nd hand options

The ride comfort was better, sidewall flex was noticeable though and they didn’t like warmer weather, i got 5 rims with useable tyres for £60, kept the best one as a spare, i was going for the jap rc look, subaru steels are out there just less of them, plenty of old impreza alloys too

I believe that Sparco Terras are also available in 16" with the correct fitment for our cars.

I was planning to get a set of Sparco Terras for winter but ended up buying new wheels for summer so I’ve just had Michelin Cross climates fitted to the original wheels.

I did exactly the same last year, I wasn't overly impressed with the CC last year and had a couple of episodes facing in the direction I was travelling from!! This year Ive dropped them down to 2.0 bar cold and its really transformed the tyre and more importantly Im confident it what its doing!!

GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

For anyone looking for a picture of a GR86 with GT86 wheels.

Standard GT86 wheels (all 7” wide) refurbed in Rota satin bronze, with 215x45 R17 full winter Falken Eurowinter HS02 tyres. Not the greatest tyres out there, but should allow me to get to work in the event of snow. Bought the wheels with tyres for £380, with almost unused tyres. So far the ride feels better than the 18’s.

TPMS sensors haven’t synced as I left the original sensors in, the little light on the dash is there but a minor inconvenience! I’ll replace them when the tyres are due (already purchased as photo, didn’t arrive in time).

A second set of 17" OEM alloys with winter tyres is the easiest and most cost-effective option, since steels in the right fitment are hard to find.

Agreed - the wheels I bought have now got the TMPS sensors fitted in and will report back when the winters go back on in a few months.

I’ve not replaced the tyres, but wasn’t happy with the paint finish so they did them again, this time in anthracite.

After 20k miles including 2 winters of daily use I’m getting close to switching out the original PS4s.
Anyone tried a set of them new fangled Cross- Climate 3 Sports? sounds like they could be just the ticket

I'm teetering on the edge of getting some fitted to the OEM wheels. The feeling of cold tyres skitting across a cold, wet road is already making me wince
