GR86 What data does the ECU capture?

With all of the stories of GR86 engine failures emerging , at this time for unknown reasons, it would be interesting to know what the ECU and or, other systems on the car actually logs

Anyone with a Toyota and the MyT App will already know it tracks your journeys through geolocation and gives reports on harsh braking / acceleration, fuel consumption, speed etc. What I’m unclear on is if this is always active in the background irrespective of whether you have subscribed to the MyT app or not

The ecu will log everything I would think.

My lotus (Toyota engine) would get a print out every service showning total run times, time idling, 0-60, 0-100, max speed, max engine speeds etc.

Porsche have similar. You can request a report to show if it's even been money shifted or been in high rev ranges for too long.

dont think the ecu logs trips etc it will be like other tracking systems ie sim card based via gps

the engine ecu will log things like ignition on/off times / fuel trims / rev limits / engine mis-fires / emission failures etc etc

The manual mentions it records certain data such as engine speed, accelerator status, brake status, vehicle speed, status of driving assist systems, images from cameras (if fitted).

There is no rpm limit during the advisory run-in period hth

High rpm for short periods during run in isn’t a bad thing it’s high loads and engine breaking I would avoid.

I quickly build to higher rpm and engine loads after i've built an engine. This discussion isn't about best practice though. We're discussing potential implications of ignoring Toyota's recommendations.

Agreed, it's how Toyota interpret it. When I got the Fabia vRS new I asked the dealer and their words were pretty much, let it get to temp then kick it's head in, which I duly did and even tracked it within the first few weeks of ownership. Never a warranty issue.

A key word in the warranty is “misuse”, now anyone unfortunate to end up arguing over a warranty claim if that allegation gets thrown in the mix is probably in for some fun You say “prove it!“ , they start reeling off ECU data, let’s hope no one ends up in that situation.

PS Don’t forget to go ”Dark” on your MyT the day before you head off for a track day

Now we have some cars in the UK, has anyone worked out what data is stored / shared, and how much of it you can opt out of?

To Andy’s point, I’m worried about how easy it might be to invalidate a warranty. Sorry sir, you’ll have to pay for that new engine; computer shows you went 85mph last Tuesday. The fact the pickup is half full of RTV, and you turned right isn’t relevant.

From what I've seen so far, the app doesn't do much. Saw mention of a logger but not seen mention of it since or if it's removable.
