GR Yaris Update regarding engine oil during periodic maintenance

Hello,

As I was searching on the official Greek Toyota website for the cost of the periodic maintenance of my 2022 GR Yaris CP, I came across the following announcement:


Announcement (7/7/2026)

Update regarding engine oil during periodic maintenance

We would like to inform you that during the periodic maintenance of your vehicle, in some cases, 5W30 FE type engine oil may be used instead of 0W20.

The use of 5W30 FE oil is based on a relevant directive from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Toyota Motor Europe (TME) and is fully compatible with all Toyota gasoline engine technologies.

This specific change does not affect the operation, performance, or reliability of the engine, nor the rights arising from your vehicle's factory warranty.

For any clarification, you may contact the Authorized Toyota Repairer Network.


I haven't contacted Toyota yet, but I wanted to ask if anyone is aware of this announcement.

The funny thing is, when I tried to book a service for the Toyota Yaris Cross, the exact same message popped up.

Toyota's official response to my inquiry regarding which of the two oils is preferable.

"We would like to inform you that according to the manufacturer's specifications, the compatible oil/lubricant type is SAE 0W-20.

Due to restrictions in the lubricant supply chain, a technical directive from Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Europe permits the use of the 5W30 FE lubricant.

This change is compatible with all Toyota petrol engine technologies."

wow that was funny way of dodging the bullet - instead of arguing with technical decisions they went directly to availability. So in essence if its a logistical decision vs. technical limiatation one could assume its no issue to use that oil from technical standpoint.. they just didn't say it.
