GR Yaris TPMS - won’t activation?

I am having troubles getting my TPMS Sensors to work. The shop I bought them from have used these on several GR Yaris and said they had been programmed and are all set up to go directly out of the box.

I have driven around for 150km now but I’m still getting the screen that sensors are being initialized.

Am I doing something wrong?
Do these really not have to be activated?

Make sure you don't put the car in reverse after you have attempted to pair to the car - as soon as you go into reverse, it cancels the setup.

Car wasn’t put in reverse. So that shouldn’t be the problem

My AliExpress specials won't work either and I've tried many many times to identify new sensors. I don't know if they need to be 'activated' but others have had success straight out the box.

Techstream still shows ID codes of original sensors but I can't program new codes with my MiniVCI cable. I'm going to visit my dealer soon to see if they can program new IDs, if that doesn't work then I might have to fork out for proper sensors which is poo.

This is what Steve from Lindops sent to me back in September - my issue was 'reverse' cancelling the connection, but the other points may help you.

exciting times, it can be one of 2 things, either the car hasn't set the position of the tpms monitors or one / more arnt programmed in. I would assume they have used the tpms monitors out of the original wheels so will be programmed. I would firstly try.
REGISTER TRANSMITTER ID (USING AUTOMATIC ID REGISTRATION FUNCTION)
Tip

• If the ECU Data List is displayed using the GTS while work is being performed, the registration mode will be cancelled.
• If the ignition switch is turned off before starting to drive while performing work, registration mode will be cancelled.

Adjust the tire pressure in all tires to the specified pressure.

1. Turn the ignition switch off and stop the vehicle for 15 minutes or more.
   Tip
   After stopping the vehicle for 15 minutes or more, the frequency of radio wave signals sent by the tire pressure warning valve and transmitters increases for the first few minutes of driving (8 times the normal frequency).
2. Select "Identifying Each Wheel & Position" on the multi-information display and press and hold the "OK" switch (steering pad switch assembly) until the tire pressure warning light blinks 3 times.
   Tip
   During registration, the tire pressure warning light blinks for 1 minute before turning on, the multi-information display tire pressure displays as "---" and "Identifying Each Wheel & Position" is displayed.
3. Drive at approximately 40 km/h (25 mph) for approximately 10 to 30 minutes during 1 trip.
4. During the procedure, make 2 or more right or left turns.
   Tip
   Do not drive the vehicle in reverse during registration.
   If the vehicle is driven in reverse during registration, the information may be reset before registration completes, and registration may take longer than normal to complete.
5. When registration is completed, the tire pressure warning light turns off, the normal tire pressure is displayed on the multi-information display.
   Tip
   • Registration may take longer than normal in the following driving environments.
     • Vehicle is often stopped
     • Vehicle is stopped for long period of time
     • Vehicle is driven in reverse
     • Vehicle is driven parallel to another vehicle with the same type of tire pressure warning valve and transmitter installed for a long duration of time
     • Vehicle was not stopped for 15 minutes or more before registration
     • Vehicle was driven at 40 km/h (25 mph) or less for a long duration of time
     • The ignition switch is turned from ON to off during ID registration

If this fails to work all they tyres would need removing to record the tpms codes and programme.

Could this be any help?
Would it be possible to clone the OEM sensors to the new generic Sensors which are now installed in my aftermarket wheels. 3.2 in the manual.

I could also get my hands on a Ateq Quickset X, which seems to be able to scan the codes of each wheel and then transfer them via the OBD Port.

(Ofcourse I was so excited the day I got the car that I didn't write down the TPMS codes before installation so want to prevent having to remount the tires.)

I bought some of the Aliexpress TPMS sensors and had Toyota "activate" them when the car was in for service. The car point blank refuses to see them but Carista picks them up fine.

I've heard this before which is utterly weird..you are 100% thrones being read by carista via OBD are the IDs of the new ones not the old ones?

I bought my TPMS through a 3rd party who I am guessing got them through Aliexpress. I did a couple of long drives with the car searching for them and nothing happened. I tried an ATS branch who could see the sensors but reckoned they couldn't do anything without knowing the manufacturer of the sensor. I was hopeful they'd woken the sensors up but again the car wouldn't recognise them. I tried another place and and they sorted them in minutes. They didn't have the old sensors so didn't clone them or anything like that, I think they read the code from the new sensors using their machine and then programmed that in. I didn't really have time to ask them how they did it but it looked like they were using the OBD port.

Yep. The codes on Carista match the codes on the new sensors and if I add/remove pressure the readings change. They do take a while for Carista to recognise them though. If I fire up the app when I get in the car they all show as not found but if I drive for a bit and then re-scan they appear. I've kind of given up with them now as I cba with removing the tyres. I may go back to Macclesfield Toyota though as I paid for 1 hour service time to get them activated.

Good to know, thanks. I might have to get one of these. Or does anyone know a really basic (read: cheap) TPMS tool that works with these sensors?

I've just drove around residential areas and back lanes for 54 minutes while keeping it below 50mph (in case I was going too fast during previous tries) and it didn't pick up my sensors so I'm starting to think they're junk.

Never managed to get it to work but can still see in Carista. IIRC the order is
1: Front Left
2: Front Right
3: Rear Left
4: Rear Right

I just removed a load of air from a front tyre and then re-read the pressures. Then did the same in the rear to confirm.

I was the same Carista beta wrote the new codes to the car tho and worked after that

Well I think I know why mine weren't activating....

Had summer tyres put on yesterday only to find 3 of my TPMS sensors rolling around in the old ones!

Would this be due to bad installation or just shoddy cheap sensors?

It's showing the new codes registered, but after a couple of attempts at pairing the tpms, I'm still getting the 'malfunction return to dealer' message? Maybe I should put the winter tyres/wheels back on (with old codes) and see if that comes back?
