The GRZoo Alps road trip 2023 thread

Keep em coming…great pics and write up so far.
I’m planning a very similar 10 day tour (based on yours), with my young lad as navigator, at the back end of August. Ferry booked, offline google maps downloaded, paper maps purchased. Wondering whether to prebook accommodation or sort it along the way….
Raring to go.

I've seen foam inlays for toolboxes and tool draws but never a car boot :ROFLMAO: love it.
 
Great post. Lovely to see so many GRYs together and in such stunning surroundings. I also love the Red Bull wrap really suits the car

Nothing firm yet, but Santander - Barcelona through the Pyrenees was a popular suggestion within the group.

I'd happily organise this year's (almost) exact same route for any group wanting to go, but there would be a charge involved, as the admin was a bloody nightmare :ROFLMAO:
 
On to Tuesday 20th...

Once again we woke to a fantastically sunny day, and a great spread for breakfast.

Today's passes included Albula, Stelvio and Gavia.

All of these were as amazing as the next, although the Stelvio (Having climed it via the Umbrial) was, predictably, very busy, so most of us just stayed at the top whilst a couple braved the crowds, camper vans, cyclists, coaches and Lamourghinis to descend the 'famous' side, turning around and heading back to the top once they'd seen enough. We descended down the Bormio side (For those not in the know, there are actually 3 ways to get up the Stelvio!) and headed for the much quieter Gavia

The highlight of the day though, for me at least, was the reaction from the group to the hotel. I'd kept this quiet, and asked them not to try and do any detective work, as I wanted to see the looks on their faces. It didn't disappoint.


Talk about location, location, location...


The 3 mile private driveway was like a hillclimb stage, and when I jokingly said to the receptionist that we'd like to close the road for our own time trial event, he replied "Oh, we do that, Sir. We have our own hill climb competition every year!"

WOW!!!

this was spot of the trip for me! Defo gonna fly in with the Mrs at some point and explore the area a bit more

The Simplon pass was it's typical self at this time of year, too many trucks and far too many road works to be enjoyable, but it lead us to the craziest piece of tarmac any of us have ever driven. The 25km of SS631 from Malesco to Lake Maggiore was almost worth making the trip on it's own. Starting out innocuously enough, this snake of tarmac quickly becomes a single-track mass of twisty nirvana, with armco to your right and a cliff face to the left for something like 8-9 miles. This would make for a perfect WRC tarmac stage, and obviously the cars dealt with everything that was thrown at them. Blind bends everywhere meant lots of leaning on the pathetic horn in a poor attempt to make our presence known to any potential oncoming vehicles. Thankfully these were non existent on this particular stretch,

This is indeed a nice strip of tarmac. Last time I was behind a local Fiat 500. The driver exactly knew how to go for it properly. I was impressed!
 
Wow! WOW!! The REAL DEAL. What a trip and what a turnout. Something very special about an outing this well supported. BRILLIANT!
 
Don’t know how this was organised before wether it was just individuals or forum organised, but is there a plan to do a forum tour in 2024? This looked like a lot of fun!

I just got back from a Euro tour organised by another group I am in. It was epic. 2500 miles in 7 days through 12 countries 🚗🚗🚗
