GR86 Test Drives Email!

Yeh very disappointed that I only got the 30mins especially after the huge deposit i had to put down first. I can only think that they were hoping to sell it on at some stage in the future and the least miles driven, the better for them, but having said this Toyota have told them they aren’t able to sell so I don’t really know the benefit for them! It’s like they just used a similar policy for every other car they have demoed previously which I guess they are able to sell.. eventually. I’m sure it’s a case of getting used it .. all I know is fiesta’s so always going to be difficult to get to grips with how this car drives.. even if I had a similar 3 hours I’m sure I would still need many more to drive the way it should!

Is it really the case that you can only test drive the 86 if you’ve got a confirmed order? Some GR centres are going to have cars sat around for weeks/months at a time!

Would perhaps explain why my dealer got theirs "late", then haven't PDI'd it yet, perhaps in the hope that it isn't test driven much so will be better come resale. I probably won't bother if my car is truly imminent.

I think it's a bit off asking for a 4 figure deposit for a test drive for someone with a confirmed order! Asking random nobodies who have turned up for a joyride s a different matter entirely though, why do the minority have to spoil it for the rest of us, thank you instagram w@nkers.

It's good to see that many of us are now (finally!) getting the opportunity to drive the car we enthusiastically and frantically ordered back in April.

Thank you to everyone taking the time to post their post-drive thoughts and pictures on here for our delectation; both the serious (and somewhat less serious!) reviews are much appreciated.

I called Harry Feeney @ Blackpool and spoke to Will (he deals with the performance cars) and explained the situation and I asked if they had a demo car in, which they do, and what the situation was knowing i hadn't ordered via them. At first he said he would be nervous due to previous experiences (apparently, someone wrote the GT86 off in the first week (coming from a BMW). Knowing i have a ST he was a little more confident that things would be fine . So after a chat he said he is going to check with his manager and if we all agree, try and see if the car can be sent to them instead of Preston. This would mean they would get something out of it, and be happy to give me a good demo experience .. i can drive to Preston, test it on the B roads and then drive it back. Also @ Preston the centre is being refurbished atm and a little nervous about where the car will be parked, and which visitors will be trying to see inside/opening it etc etc.

I guess the biggest issue is I have already paid for the ducktail spoiler, and have asked them to fit it so not sure if they will be entirely happy with this.. i dont think i've actually paid for the fitting yet so i could still just pick up the spoiler and then get Blackpool to sort.. i need to find out.

Phone ToyotaGB, speak to Harris explain the situation and ask if he can arrange a test drive/speak to dealer for you.

I’m in the same boat and was basically told they aren’t allowed to refuse a test drive. So the dealer being nervous about your driving it due to past experience imo is bollocks and shouldn’t even be being brought up.

You also shouldn’t have to change dealers, unless you want to, according to ToyotaGB re testing a car

That scratch wasn't there yesterday at 6pm when I saw the car. That doesn't inspire confidence does it!!

I didn't bother to ask about test drives as the only person I spoke to was the receptionist. Her take on the car was that it looks very James Bond'ish!
I think it may have been caused by the stand they have next to the car. It will probably buffer out tbf, but like you said doesn’t inspire confidence.

Interested to hear more from those moving from an st to the 86 on the gr’s sound system.

I’ll be px`ing my 19 plate st line and I’m wondering if the speakers will be poor compared to that, or if the lack of quality only shows when compared to a cayman etc.

As long as it’s not much worse than the fiesta I think I’ll be happy to leave as is for a while. Although i do remember finding the gt86 system a bit lacking.

Bracknell Demo car - (mileage read 454 miles).

My test drive was just 30 minutes - unaccompanied and fun! No availability at weekend so had to fit a quick test drive into the working week.
Main purpose was to drive home and check the car handled the sloping drive ok. It did...

Test drive was through town and back home.
Ride - firm but not crashy. I was pleasantly surprised as roads here are bad.
Clutch - no problems. Didn't stall and one less worry (all this discussion about changing clutch spring had me concerned)
Gearbox - notchy (but positive) and this will take some time to get used to.
Interior - seating position was excellent and comfortable. Getting in was fine as well (I am in my late 50s) .

I have been out of fun cars for a while. Last fun car was a TVR Chimera.

Pavel from Bracknell Toyota was great. He apologised for the lack of info and I was given a rough date of 12/14th December. Good guy and has restored my faith in Bracknell Toyota (not a dicky bird from them).

I just cannot wait now for delivery!

I do wonder if the Bracknell demo car is easily the highest mileage and busiest one. It does seems that way when reading this forum, I went and put some miles on it the week before too.

Had my demo today in a red one from Hastings. Very impressed drove well. Just had to show driving licence and given the keys. Ride/steering / handling seem excellent. Gearbox nice short shift. Radio seemed good quality and controls easy to use. Reversing camera was fine nice big screen. Heated seats worked well. Trim is finished nicely no rattles. Cramped in the back. Overall thumbs up liked it and I come from having Caymans /911’s. When you look at the price it’s really great value.

Was I mistaken when I did my demo but did the car have keyless entry? I thought I had locked it tried the handle and it opened. Or maybe I just hit the wrong knob !

Yeah it has keyless entry, if you lock it then open with the key nearby it will unlock itself automatically.

I checked like 10 times to ensure I had locked it. 🤣

Thanks for clarifying also forgot to check to see if it has folding door mirrors?

Went for a RT over at Somerset County Cars this morning.

Ryan my dealer point of contact was lovely, he‘d got some extra juice in the Red MT with 79 miles on it, made me sign a £500 excess, took the keys to my 120d and told me to go of and play for 2 hours.

in the end I did 44 miles of A303, some B roads, and the odd bit of getting lost of C roads. Plenty enough time to play, across all road conditions.

The gearbox was great, the clutch fine, riding position perfect( I’m only 5ft 5). For aome reason (🤪) the track mode button wouldn’t work, but given the very low mileage I’d not have driven it in track mode I just wanted to see the display change.

Engine is nice and linear, did a 6th to 4th and a few pace driving moments, 20 up to (5th amendment) was fun. Its very easy to run up over national speed limits. Nothing is neck breaking, but given the engine size and aspirated engine you can’t expect RS Audi speeds.

Where the car shines is pin sharp handling and a very nice feel of full control even on greasy, cold, leaf covered roads. You know you going quick, but it doesn’t feel bothered and gives a big heap of driver confidence. This car would make Ms Daisy a formula driver.

Cabin was comfy, everything pretty well much to hand, stereo isn’t a bose, but is adequate. The piped in noise is fine, although hitting near full rev’s does resonate overly loud- I think its Toyota’s way of saying watch your speed.

Dealer looked me up on the Toyota system and said that March 23 is the suggested delivery. Nothing has been updated on MyToyota, its still showing “processing” for the 10:42 order time.
