GR86 Speedengineering.de intake box

Intakes cause a bit of a stir on forums, there is some complicated engineering behind them and it delves deep into the realms of fluid dynamics. Poking around and removing stuff can have a negative impact. From what I've picked up, the large resonator on the side of the airbox is there for noise reduction, the bladder under the intake tube which I think is a helmholtz resonator is performance orientated, according to a HKS engineer ditching this has a negative impact on mid range torque and peak BHP, the intake snorkel acts like a venturi which again is performance orientated. The GR cup cars in the US have the resonator blanked and run an intake duct rather than a snorkel, but they do leave the one on the intake in.

That speedengineering airbox seems like a a great way to waste some money. I would be interested to see how much R&D they have put into it. As swizzle said you can get a blank for the resonator for a lot cheap to get more noise from the intake. I do have a file to have the plug 3D printed, it would be cheaper than shipping the same thing from the US.

Have you had a look at getting the plug printed? it's not something I've ever looked into but if its a cheap way for more noise with out sacrificing performance I'm interested, almost ordered the OTL kit but the shipping was very pricey

I did yes, I got a quote for £36, so cheaper than getting it from the states. The actual part was £15 exc VAT but there is a small order surcharge if you only order 1. It might be worth doing a group buy if enough people are interested, only needs to be more than 2 for people to get one for £20 posted.

Potentially interested. Intake mods have had me curious lately, watched an in-car vid of a GR86 with the K&N intake fitted and it sounded pretty good. But it's a lot of money just for noise (mind you, so are exhausts!). It blocking the resonator makes it sound a bit more exciting for little outlay, it would be nice.

I'll also add that I have a file for an intake snorkel too, kindly designed and shared by a chap from the states. Its worth noting this hasn't had any CFD modelling done but does resemble the one used on the GR86 cup car. Not sure how viable this bit would be as I have a quote for £130 to print it, could probably source something else for that.

I think you could get enough people for a group buy for both item. If you do set one up, count me in

Take its thats a bumper off job? Think thats a bit much for me as I’ve never had one look right afterwards

Yeah it is, I am hesitant for that same reason.

At the least resonator should be a 20 quid 20 minute job. Although you do have to drill out the rivet holding it in place, which makes it less reversible.
