My local dealer is FRF Newport but looking for alternatives as they don't seem able to get an oil filter [sic] and insist on lecturing me about engine oil specs despite obviously not understanding them. Anyone used the Subaru dealer in Abergavenny (Keith Price Garages)? Amusingly, they do have oil filters!

Just buy the filter from Subaru, unbox it and give it to the Toyota dealers to use. The filters are exactly the same apart from the boxes.

I think I’ve tried most of them over the last 3 yrs and I drive to Hereford now. I’m pretty sure some dealers in our region are doing oily rag services or certainly not much more. I work on my own car so I tend to notice if things haven’t been moved. Hereford do make mistakes but I think a spanner does actually go on the car and they try to address an issue rather than argue. The only one I haven’t tried is Bristol.

I've heard good things about North Road Garage, a Toyota dealer in Builth Wells. I'll be taking my car there in the new year for it's first service in my ownership.

As I recently wrote on the ‘today’ thread, FRF Swansea are using the correct spec oil. I wasn’t that impressed with them at first but their customer service is really good now.

I bring my own oil and filter to negate their costs and ensure they have them. They got quite confused about coding the TPMS and hosed the car down when I said repeatedly not to touch it. But to deal with they are fine and they liked the dog.

JP is a fantastic driver and always seems to be a decent chap but I do not rate his garage one bit. Yes NRG have a long history of rallying although the competition cars are looked after by Melvin I believe. My experience there a few years ago was so poor I will never go back.

Ah that’s a shame. I’m also looking for somewhere a bit closer to home than Macclesfield (Gloucestershire/Wiltshire). Is it a case of it being similar to how you can’t assume a good footballer will be a good manager?

I used to be into downhill mountainbiking when I was a teenager, and there was a shop which was highly lauded and had a great race team, but the service you got from them was rubbish (eg said they’d done work on my bike but it hadn’t been done properly if at all type thing).

NRG were ok but we had a communication problem where I was actually in the wrong. Sometimes it may be the only way with customers but they were quite robust.
With some others Im pretty sure that although it’s rare I think items have been missed. I spend far too much time under my car so I believe I notice.
Otherwise I haven’t had any issues either.
