GR86 Road Angel Halo Pro with 12v Hardwiring Kit

Hi folks,

I have just collected my GR86 about 4 weeks ago.

One of the first things I wanted to get sorted was a Dash Cam; due to some irritating dings on my other car, I decided to get a Road Angel Halo Pro and hardwiring kit from Costco as they were on offer recently.

I've not driving my car in the last couple of weeks as I'm hoping to get PPF/Ceramic sorted before I add too many miles to it. I fitted the Cam with the HW kit on the weekend I got it (Friday 29th Sept) and without driving too much since then, and having left the car, it had fully drained the battery on 16th Oct (according to the Halo App).

Has anyone else had this sort of experience with a same / similar dash cam? I had left the battery monitoring/protection setting to "medium", I've since changed this to "low" after having the AA come out to jump start my car on the weekend.

Is it just not worth using the hardwire kit and leaving it to the cigarette charger?

I have mine wired into the fuse panel but not constant 12v. It's on a switched fuse so turns off with the car so no battery problems.

If the constant draining battery is an issue you can try turning off parking mode or see if has a timer setup to only record for a set amount of time after the engine is off.

There are battery packs that will give you a few days running parking mode so not to drain the battery.
 
Completely draining the battery will do it no good at all. My dashcam (front & rear) is wired into the fusebox and turns off with the car. As someone has mentioned you can get battery packs, but they won't last longer than a day or two. Hardwire it and accept that it won't pick up everything (and TBH something would have to happen within the arc of the front camera).
 
Fitted mine to the glovebox cig lighter, when I was removing the fake sound, had to remove the glovebox so got it fitting nicely behind so not wasting space in the glove box.
 
I have a Blackvue DR750 Dual in my GR Yaris - it is hardwired to permanent live and ignition. It has a built-in battery monitor though and disables parking mode once the car battery discharges to a selectable level (12.2, 12.1, 12.0v etc) that you can choose.

With earlier dash cams I used a Blackvue Power Magic Pro (or similar, sure there were some cheaper ones) to do the same - allow parking mode with permanent live but stop the car battery from being discharged below a pre-determined voltage level.

Yeah, I may revert to this and just return the hardwire cable back to Costco.

I'm not sure if I can be bothered to keep it hardwired if it's only going to be when the car is running.

Modern Dashcams, especially 4K ones, can absorb a lot of power when permanently on. As @trebor said above, some systems have built in monitoring to prevent battery drain in parking mode. There are also settings to determine the recording duration when parked eg,. on my Blackvue 900X plus 2Ch system I set the parking duration to 2 hours (more than adequate for man-shopping) and the voltage drop monitor to 12.2v, so whichever one was reached first would deactivate the camera. I only ever had the Dashcam parking mode set to 4hrs+ when the car was at home and attached to a battery optimiser.

Unfortunately the Road Angel only seems to have the battery detection.... And I'm not convinced it's any good.

I think I'm gonna wait for the crappy weather to die down and just remove the hardwired connection wiring and stick to the cigarette lighter socket in the glovebox
 
I've got a Road Angel Halo drive, the cable slotted down the pillar nicely and I've just used the 12v socket and usb adapter.
Thanks for the info, as I was considering hard wiring it, but sounds like it just drains the battery.

I might try a Nextbase on my wife's car, see if it's any better.
