@Florens @Spirited wondering if it is possible to retrofit the mk2 steering column for countries with strick modification laws.

Interesting thought. What I wonder
How much more reach on the mk2 column? Possible to measure? Is it significant to warrant an attempted retrofit?
Is it possible to retrofit? Is the the column itself that has more reach? Or has the mounting point in the dashboard been moved?

Discuss!

Spacershop is 5,5cm. Which is quite a lot. Have had mine over two years and everything works, obviously haven't verified the airbag but it's the same cable so... Feels very stable.

Before any attempts at this we'll need to wait for the mk2 to be fully released, then we'll be able to do proper research. I'm sure that it'll be a lot of work but it might be worth it from an ergonomic standpoint. Thankfully I've already got long arms so it's not super bad... Could be better though :)

It's interesting to me that Toyota both lowered the seat and lengthened the steering column. That's exactly what I think I need to get into the perfect driving position (I'm 6ft tall and fairly ordinary proportions).

I'm debating a spacer, but I don't really like the modified look (OCD designer by trade). I also don't really want the stalks 5cm further away. The GR is my daily and I do a fair bit of city and motorway driving.

I only want about 2cm more reach. So a retrofit that's relatively affordable and simple would be a no brainer. Hope someone clever and willing can figure it out!

if you think 5cm is too much there is also steering column adjustment available so in practice it is really up to your settings.
Would I do a effort to get 2cm more reach - maybe not. You get the same length by tilting the chair more upwards one click.

Of course. The stalks are always 5cm further away though - at any setting.

I am quite particular about my driving position. Tilting the seat forward does help - but it's just another slight compromise, ultimately. In the same way that sliding the seat nearer helps arm reach but ruins the position of your legs and feet.

I'm fairly happy as it is, to be honest. So unlikely to bother if the retrofit is complex or expensive.

It looks like the reach hasn't changed, just the angle.

Having this lower angle wouldn't do anything for me as I have the wheel near it's highest setting albeit with the spacer installed.

Ergonomics are a complex matter, YMMV as they acronym.

Yeah I don't think that would do much for me.. Thank you, great find.

Coincidently, I've just installed the 50 mm steering wheel spacer on my Mk1... and what amazing difference does it make! Thanks @Onehp for the tips /suggestions regarding the spacer but also when coordinating this with a slightly taller gear knob. Win/win/win - highly recommended (y) It really transforms the way you feel/control the car.

likewise steering in highest pos also here. yes its complicated!

Had opportunity to compare the mk2 2024 side to side to my OG mk1 + steering wheel spacer + digital rear mirror.
Very similar feel, can just see under mirror in both cases, headroom is like 10mm more on mk2 2024, mk2 mirror can be adjusted to like 10mm from liner and mines right at the ceiling so makes sense.

I'm 1m83 but YMMV of course.
