I've had my car one year and one day, today. Mine was the first to be delivered by RRG Macclesfield and beat the arrival of their demonstrator the famous 'Mule' as it came to be known by a week.

Upon site of the Estoril video largely thanks to Monkey London and the thought of owning a homologation special, left me in typical mid-life crisis. When I contacted my old friend, Richard at RRG, he was almost surprised that I was interested in the Yaris. But the spec and that it was a pure homologation special perfectly timed with my tiring 8 year old and 150,000 mile GT86, a deposit was put down at the first opportunity on 7 March 2020. A pure white Circuit Pack was on the order books.

As many will be familiar, the next part of this is a very long wait, with added bonus of COVID uncertainty. I was looking forward to a birthday weekend attending Goodwood FOS for the grand unveil, only for COVID to yet again scupper my plans. An online unveil, just isn't the same. I also felt I missed out on what could have been with invites to those of us with a car on order. But oh no, COVID strikes again.

By the time I got to the 10th November 2020 I was slightly nervous about how the British press might receive it. So much anticipation and nervousness ensued as friends asked me what I would do if it gets lukewarm reviews or worse still bad reviews. I tried not to speculate is about all I could say. Fortunately my punt on a car that didn't really yet exist at the point of ordering, had paid off. Have you ever seen a Toyota get such rave reviews? No, neither have I!

All of this made the long wait even more painful and the delay to mine and all the other first batch of cars stuck in Burnaston Derby due to a lack of the right colour wheel nuts, was almost too much to bear.

Eventually the day came. My car arrived on the 2nd December 2020 and collection day being a Saturday on the 5 December. Richard could have given me the car on the Friday, but bless him, he made me wait another day so he could organise for 5 friends to come down and stay legal in the bloody law of 6!

Now there is my happy face!

So much excitement ensued in fact that the very next morning I apologised to my fiancee at 6am saying that I needed to go for a drive on a cold and wet December morning and that I'd see him later. This was I admit as I didn't want him to come, I just needed to have my time alone with the car and start the bonding process. I felt bad for eating a Maccies in my car in Wythenshawe, though this could not be helped due to the COVID rules of the day preventing you going inside.

A quick scoot off to Oulton Park and down the borders on absolutely deserted roads on the Welsh Borders was just some kind of wonderful in three degrees centigrade, pouring rain in the gloom of a damp and cold dawn. But I was impressed how surefooted my car was and revelled in getting that running in mileage done.

It's funny, but as soon as Richard got his demonstrator, there we were in ever increasing numbers going for dawn raids down the Welsh Borders at 7am for the next three Sunday mornings running! What a hoot. But really with no pubs open and not much to do, why not eh? These were back in the tier days of COVID and having recovered from the virus myself and allowed out just in time to collect my car, I thought why not?

We'd drive down to Shrewsbury and have some food out. I even managed to catch up with an old friend of mine, Ross, a fellow petrolhead to test each other's cars as he had an FK8 Civic Type-R at the time.

Of course, Ross being Ross, jumped in my car with a 1000miles on the clock and sent it. Blimey, he was confident straight out of the box. I had a lot of fun in his Civic Type-R as well. Though I still struggle with the looks of it, it was mega to drive and the way it put the power down and the composure of the chassis was stonking. Ross liked my car, but as ever preferred his own, it didn't feel special enough to him he said. He drives a Supra now. ;)

Still, much discussion ensued in the Smokehouse as we chewed the fat. A good day was had and it was great to try each other's cars.

I guess the next thing that happened was a bloody lockdown. What to do? Well, Richard had been talking with Andrew at DTUK and he had a tuning box on the Mule, so every Saturday he'd pull up, I'd drive and we'd spend testing maps, which became a real skill in itself. I had the time though and within a week had a box on my car where Andy would give me files and in the end ask me to explain how they felt on the way to work in Burnley and back.

I even had a dog co-pilot. Mascot Indy in residence of course!

Honestly the only real 'problem' I've had in nearly 18000 miles. This popped off. I popped it back in again never to come out again.

Here is the tuning box on before I got Gary at GRS engineering to make me a mounting bracket.

A fancy cup holder was added too. This is a great addition.

But back to the tuning box. Having tried this on the Mule, I couldn't resist it on mine. The difference was obvious and I was getting quite into trying different maps that Andy would send me sometimes three or four times a week! He promised he'd name a map the Lauren map over one I tried, I think I still have it on mine, but not sure anyone else does. Andy was obsessed with involving and fine tuning maps. He would often send me maps to test and would stop telling me what I'd done, so I had to work it out. Pretty much all the time I got it right though, but it was like I had to recalibrate my brain in throttle sensitivity to find the nuances of the subtle difference in the map.

Then came the harness, a Schroth Rallye 3 harness. I had to get Gary to make me a few shims to get it fitted correctly, but its been fab in the sprints for my ageing back.

On went the GRS mount made by Gary. Much more tidy! :)

An ITG panel filter then went in, thanks to Andy at DTUK as a pressie for all my work on the tuning maps. Thanks, Andy. :)

Every now and again, Mark would bring out my old GT86 for a run in tandem with mine so we could both play in our 'new' cars on my old test route, the 'Lauren Triangle' which takes in the A54 from Bosley and down the infamous Cat and Fiddle Road. That was fun. :)

I also bought some new 'dancing' shoes. Gazoo Racing Red of course. ;)

Good Friday 2020, we were allowed out again and to meet people, well outside at least! Steve Fosters arranged this and we drove up to Hawes for 8am in the morning, some two hours north of Manchester in the Yorkshire Dales. It was quiet, dead quiet and we absolutely had a ball, exploring what the car could do, revelling in the handling, trying not to get too much air, all the way to Kielder Forest and up to the Scottish Borders, briefly tripping into Scotland. Thankfully we didn't get arrested by the COVID police as we dropped back into England again.

Sticky was in attendance and I must say, it felt like I met some kindred spirits that day. It was just so, so good to be out with car nuts again and get some serious driving in. For those in the know, please don't tell anyone just how epic the roads are up here. It was just mega and so were the cars. In fact, so much so, we bullied the poor Porsches' along for the ride into submission with just how quick you can peddle a GR Yaris in its natural habit. It was made for the Dales. :)

The harness went in and it fitted just fine.

Time for a change seeing as I had so many friends even of the non-car variety telling me that my car was too quiet, so on went a Cobra non-resonated exhaust. Here's the OEM one in the pic. I had tried lots of different configurations on the Mule, including RS Fabrications, but just thought they were too expensive, so I took a punt on the one combination I hadn't tested. I had got Richard to swop in and out resonators, rear boxes just so I could try all the combinations. As it turned out, I'm happy with my exhaust and it was a good choice. I do find though that all aftermarket exhausts are a bit bassy in the low rev range. You get used to it.

Apologies for not being able to find a pic of the exhaust before it was installed!

Driving to Burnley for work and I notice some debris ahead in the middle lane. I thoughtfully pull out in time to lane 3 only for the car ahead of me in lane 2 to drive right over whatever it was shattering the debris and throwing it straight at my car. How annoying! :(

Thankfully most of it polished out, but I think this is what took a slat out of the grill, which I didn't notice until a month or so later.

Here's my cars sprint debut at Croft. We couldn't stay over due to, you guessed it COVID so I had to drive there and back in a day. I had no idea what the car would be like, but I just went for it in lieu of no other way to approach it. I found plenty of oversteer and thankfully a vice free chassis. A tip from a well seasoned friend in an EVO 9 was not to lift, so I didn't. The car was epic and immediately four seconds a lap quicker than my well honed GT86. Impressive stuff!

In May, we had a meet up of all four colour cars. Can you spot the difference between pearl and pure white?

A beautifully hot day and we were actually allowed to go to a car show by June. This was at Capesthorne Hall near Macclesfield.

With magnetic decals worked out seeing as we couldn't use the doors, the Javelin Sprint Series finally kicked off at Blyton Park. Great fun though I did spin it on my last lap! Always good to find the limits, I say. :)

I got a chance to have a good look at Adrian's car, though he had already broken it practicing the day before!

Richard finally got his car towards the end of June and couldn't resist bringing it up to show us. He had Sticky do the decals straightaway. Very nice!

I was then asked to participate in reviewing the Eagle F1 Super Sport tyre for Goodyear.

Have to say, I do really like these tyres and given how much cheaper they are than the PS4S, they really are a great alternative. They have great progression and are mega in monsoon conditions, which I got to try out at a very wet Three Sisters. The centre tread block seems to disappear a bit, but it doesn't seem to affect the performance.

I took my car to Goodwood Festival of Speed and bumped into an old friend from Toyota GB whilst having a look at the new GR86. What an epic event this was even if the weather didn't play ball. Noticed three other GR Yaris parked near mine when we came to leave!

A lot of similarities to my findings and history. I sold my GT86 to my god son, of course quite cheap and now I'm close to 29000km (18000mls) with my GR Yaris. I don't want to miss any moment driving and analyzing my little red one, doing just sensible (say cheapish but effective) mods. Thanks Lauren for posting your report.

Bye for now Fred

What's involved in fitting the harness and any details on the harness itself?

Nice write up, everyone will have moved on by the time I get mine lol.

What's involved in fitting the harness and any details on the harness itself?

This is the harness which is designed to be used as is.

Shoulder strap attaches to rear C-pillar mount. You will need some sleeves made up to fit with the stock Yaris rear belt and a new seat belt bolt that is longer due to the design of the seat belts, the stock spacers you get aren't big enough. It's not too bad in terms of installing. We had to unbolt the drivers seat and take the rear trim off on the C-pillar. You do have to bend the shoulder strap mount nearly 90 degrees to fit to the C-pillar but it is designed to allow for this.

I know I still have another 6 months of posts to add, but it's been a long week.

Today my car was in for it's 18,000 mile service or 3rd year!

This is an intermediate service so is really just an oil change and check over. There is a shortage of the regular oil, the Advanced Fuel Economy Extra. Richard at RRG Macclesfield has bought Titan GT1 Flex 0W/20 which is ILSAC GF-6A oil.
He also changed the transfer box and rear diff oil which he said was pretty black after that many miles.
No other problems. I asked him to check my front pads. 4mm front and 7mm rear, so still a fair bit of life in them. Will get them changed (though arguably only really need to do fronts) before I do my first track day of the year.

Had no other issues, though the strips either side of the roof are slightly lifting at the rear, so that will done under warranty.

Fab service as always and it was nice to meet Neil there today with his White GR, he was getting an Eventuri intake fitted. It does look a nice bit of kit. There were five GR Yaris there including Richard's! It's like a GR centre at RRG Macc. :)

Great to meet you to, too Neil, thanks for making me do no work.

Hope you are enjoying the Eventuri, it did look good, I admit.

And now for the last 5 months or so of ownership.

In July I reached a milestone with the big 5-0 in I have to say difficult conditions, but we managed to get off to Goodwood FOS for my birthday treat. It really is a brilliant event, but a day is not enough. Had a look around the new GR86 and had a chat with Jason from Toyota GB who was driving the GR Yaris up the hill all day.

It's a fair old trek from Manchester to London and then onto Goodwood, but the car handled it easily. I guess in Covid times it was the furthest south I've gone in it so far.

The picture above is how an annoyed mother parked her car up against mine, during a crap day at work for me. Thankfully no harm done and then she denied. Oh the joys of social work! I suppose this is what can happen in daily life.

Next up was a trip over to the Isle of Wight, seeing as my planned trip for a car meet with my old German and Dutch friends got cancelled due to Covid. Indy seen here in the back. Again, the car covers motorway trips easily and comfortably. :)

Then it was off to Shelsley Walsh, with a fantastic event setup by Michael who runs the GR Shop. It was predictably soaking wet and I really mean soaking wet. Shelsley Walsh is a fascinating place, but I had to admit after the first drive up, I was just terrified by how narrow it was pretty much everywhere. What a contrast this is to a circuit. Still, I do love the history about the place and it was a really entertaining day, meeting a load of other GR Yaris owners and having a good old natter.

As the day went on I gained a bit in confidence, though as the event was for fun, I certainly didn't want to bin it so reigned it in a bit. On the last run got it properly sideways though with Richard from RRG in my passenger seat. There is a really nice little film about the day that was made, but sadly doesn't seem to be published yet. Was a great vid of the sideways moment!

Next up was the second wettest sprint I've ever experienced at Three Sisters near Wigan. The rain was torrential, it was a double header and I didn't have any way of keeping my race boots dry! I had some pretty miserable feet and even though I dried them on the radiator in the hotel overnight, they only got wet again the next day. I now have some waterproof boot covers. Lesson learnt.

He had an issue under heavy braking and hit the tyre wall. He said that there was an issue with the braking caused by his standalone ECU and brake distribution with the ever varying torque split of the 4WD system. Thankfully he was able to piece it back together with creative use of cable ties.

I won my class, but Stotty in his albeit slightly stripped out GR had me on the Saturday. Comfortable win in his absence on the Sunday though, but have to admit, just Richard and I in it. Still second in class, not too bad and the quickest car there that didn't arrive on a trailer!

Found out the F1 Super Sport tyres were astonishingly good in monsoon conditions. Had loads of oversteer in track mode too on the exit of tight corners. It took a bit of bottle getting comfortable with it wanting to slide all the way through the apex.

Capesthorn Hall for a static show on a gloriously hot August bank holiday weekend. :)

Next was the double header I was looking forward to so much. First up Japfest then onto Salon Prive at the invitation of the Duke of Marlborough. Naturally we had a little convoy down to Milton Keynes for the day before banter in the bar.

Then onto Anglesey come September for the next round of the sprint series. All of us had massive issues with tons of oversteer into the faster corners which certainly focused the mind. I couldn't seem to find anything but understeer in the slower corners. All day I could not get the balance right. Adrian struggled similarly too.

You can see where it's worn the centre tread off on the F1 Super Sport tyre. All seemed to be affected to a lesser degree. I actually went back to Goodyear technical who told me I had overheated the tread block but that it wasn't structural and just to carry on. The surface at Anglesey is really abrasive.

Went for the chopped carbon gear knob. The idea being that it replicates the forged carbon you can't see on the roof. Nice and comfortable gear knob though. I like it. :)

All went well until I tried to find that extra bit of time on my last run. I was on a mission and tried to take the Gooseneck in fourth. I overshot it and went straight on, jumped over a small mound, though it felt quite big at 80mph! When I rejoined the track I clouted the offside front on the edge of the kerb which made the most almighty bang, it went right through me.

I got out the car dreading to see what I'd find.

Thankfully the car drove home perfectly, no vibration and no harm done. It didn't even knock the geometry out which I got checked a few weeks later. No vibration either. I couldn't do much about the edge of the wheel rim being bent out, but got a friend's son who repairs wheels to sort it for me.

What a pic though in action at Cadwell. Remember I said that the car tends to oversteer on faster corners? Here's the proof:

Next up was my third service in December at 18,000 miles. Car has been pretty faultless which is great and I still love driving it. Had the diff and transfer box oils done at the same time. I am going to get the roofs strips changed under warranty as they are slightly lifting at the rear.

Lauren, your oversteer you refer to is most likely due to the toe out you are running on the rear. If this is to your liking then great, if not, then a half degree of toe in would probably resolve it.
