GR Yaris Ordering custom wheels - dilemma on offset.

What is this based on? Any science/research?

First of all, experience through previous cars, and reading reasonable educated people's comments here on the forum. Just scroll the Wheels & tyres thread, there's loads of information, pictures and food for thought.
Not rocket science anyhow, just simple calculation to know how much poke you accept / shouldn't exceed, without moving too far away from OE dimensions so as not to deteriorate the drivability. That is only perception, and for that, to each his own.
Then hours of research to find the perfect wheel in size / color / liking / price point and all those sorts of things that one always has to compromise with.
Then by experience because I bought a set of 18"x8.5J ET 43 (+8mm poke) and absolutely love them. With 235/40/18 semi-slicks TW 200 rubber, there's more than enough grip, much more than OEM, but without destroying the drive train due to excessively wide and grippy tyres.
Those are the reasons I was saying, in my opinion, I would'nt go more than ET 35 with 8.5J, that's already +16mm poke compared to OEM.
But, to each his own...

WedsSport TCX-105 18"x8.5J ET43 wrapped in Yoko A052 235/40/18. Nearly 1kg per wheel + tyre lighter than OEM. The A052s are quite heavy for their size. The Cup 2s I have on those wheels now are a bit lighter for the same size, but the sidewalls are a bit softer than A052.

I had a very negative experience with my Fiesta ST. Decreased ET by around 13mm to clear larger brake calipers. The amount of bump steer this caused was shocking.
I remember I went and got an alinement done soon after. The Tech who did it drove around the block basically said, "what the hell". It was bad. Some road surfaces, it would try and rip the steering wheel out of your hand. 🫨

Yes, quite true. That was my point. Moving too far away from OEM specs can ruin your drive.

The size of the potholes that have opened up around here has me thinking 245/40 might be a safer option
