GR Yaris Noise from 4 WD Diff.

Yesterday started car and have to to a 90 degree turn to the left to get off the driveway. Was going slow and gently and observed a slight noise from i think the rear diff. It was only for a second. Was not to concerned as for a family car have a two year old GLC mercedes and have the same sound when at low speed and tight turning when cold. Mercedes have said that this is normal on four wheel drive cars do not worry.

I have a circuit white GR almost one year old just over 5500 miles and have enjoyed about 7 track days.

so have any of you fine chaps hear of the same situation or noise? If so what have you done or found out.

In slow speed manoeuvring the Torsen diffs can cause opposite wheels to scrabble a bit if there are some stones/dirt/etc that initiate momentarily grip loss.

Hard to tell on a forum if it was that what you heard...

The car is full of mechanical noises, specially the ones with Torsens. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless is something that is repeated and clearly not normal.

The first thing I noticed when I put a factory Torsen in the back of mine was the occasional mechanical noise on tight low speed turns in forward or reverse. Absolutely normal.

I would say so. I hear lots of clunks and clacks from the transmission, gearing etc. Lack of sound deadening and insulation in the pursuit of light weight is a major factor. You get the same noises in many cars but you’re abstracted away from them.

I like it, reminds you you’re piloting a machine made from bits of metal meshing with each other, and not some jumped-up e-scooter

Yep mines the same, the noises i hear make me think

Noise when manouevering are normal, as in any car with Trick diffs etc, even a FWD with special diffs make noise on occasion,


Noises are to be expected on damp Asphalt, damp contrete, and any surface with an extremely high or low surface friction.

Its the sound when car is saying 'we should be sliding here'. Just love that.

You most likely have drum brakes on the rear, and the shoe linings need attention. Worn brakes can stick and move when starting off making a click, similarly when coming to rest stopping. If the noise keeps happening while driving, it is likely a wheel nut has come off and is moving under the hubcap. Noise

That's like 25% accurate at best. There're drum brakes, of a sort, at the rear...
