Hi,

Another Michelin tire-thread

Is there anyone here that can share the experience of the Cup 2 tire when used on your Yaris - road use mainly as there is already lots written about the great performance On track.

There's lots to read about this tire, asked other users as well, and it seems the wet condition-handling is the weak spot, so yes am aware of this, but still interested to hear what other Yaris drivers say :)

Thanks!

I don’t share the opinion that the Cup 2 is a great tire for the Yaris on track. I’ve seen a few cases first hand where even in 245 the tire can’t cope and parts of the rubber completely disintegrate. And with experienced people on track, so pressures and tire temps are controlled. I think Cup 2 is a great tire…for Porsches or similar RWD cars specially N rated ones. For FWD or the GR Yaris, not so sure. For pure track work, AR1s or Yoko A052 are much better.

On the road, they are probable the most capable semi slick tire you can get. You have to watch out cold external temps, and in the rain they much better than other semis, but much worse than standard ps4s. In my opinion, if you live on a country with cold temperatures, or where it rains fairly often, I would stick to ps4s, yoko v107, GY F1 ss or similar. I doubt the pace on the street will be significantly higher than running semi slicks, but risks are higher, cold tires, rain…unless you just use the car for proper fun, even on public roads.

Just my 2 cents.

That's interesting.

I had intended to fit Cup 2's to mine once the PS4S wear out.

Was your experience of the Cups' excessive wear a result of doing a high number of laps at a time?

Thanks for your feedback! I've so far only heard good about the Cup2 (connect) with the Yaris on track. In the wet, as you've written pretty much.

instructions say that tire has to be warmed up slowly before fast laps, maybe too fast warmup can lead into disintegration?
Ordered a set of Cup2's aswell, interested to hear what pressures do people use with stock size?
I was planning to test with 2.0 bar. I guess Michelin recommends 2-2.2bar.

Weighed just tire in 225/40/18, 9,5kg

Haven't driven properly yet, just few km's on the street but really impressed of the front end feels with cup2 - direct and communicative. feels nice and crisp. Fun to see how it performs on track, but definitely positive. In terms of road noise I'd say its the same as ps4s. Not that bad really.

The Cup2 in OEM dimension are well priced, so definitely a nice option for mixed trackday and road use, just some additional caution when wet and cold... which can also be huge fun on this car... almost feel bad I sold the OE rims now :D

Stock size is common with other sports cars so availability should be good aswell.
When it get's colder I'm likely to swap for winters quite early on so no big issue with cold weather performance. Michelin doesn't recommend them to be used sub 10'C.

Cup2 are a really nice tire, be aware that they need pretty high pressure on track (2.4 cold and warm) and a gentle warmup so the don't delaminate. Soft rubber on the edges get quite warm fast and if the carcass is not as warm you will loose some big chunks of rubber.

Nowadays some modern tires are up there in terms of laptimes and feel but when the cup2 came out they where a perfect trackday tire for people that wanted to drive on them on the streets aswell.

Thanks for the detail. Michelin recommended hot pressures around 2.1-2.2? not sure if it differs btw sizes. I'll try to warm up tyres gently, hopefully getting on track next Tue.

Thats seems a bit on the low side but will give you good grip.
I always try to go out on at least 2.2 and then slowly build up heat and release enough to stay around 2.2 or there about.
Porsches and/or cars that works the tire even harder should aim for slightly higher pressures.

Instructions recommended to start heatup from 1.8bar but maybe safer to use little higher pressures, though carcass might heat up better with low pressure?

Reading through the Michelin instructions - for Cup R they recommend hot pressures btw 2.3-2.7, optimum being 2.5bar.
They say not to drive tyre under 2.0bar.

The Michelin Cup2 guide I've got is in Finnish so not maybe worth sharing here. :D

Finish is not my strongest lanuage (I only know kipis and makara) so you have to translate in that case...
Some of my customers regularly take their cup2r below 2 as it's a lot faster on lower pressures. But they dont last long when they do. .
