GR Yaris JDM RZ High Performance

Do you think the shift is better with the GRMN knob?.

Sitting in the garage, it feels better :)

I'll find out tomorrow and report back. I'm not a fan of heavy shift knobs on good-shifting cars (like GRY). They're a band-aid for clunky transmissions and an NVH control.

Can't believe Toyota left 195 grams on the table with the original car 😂

That's got to be worth, what, 0.02 seconds per lap?

0.0002 more likely.

The 60g knob is much better, though. Reviews rave about the shift feel in this car, but it's always been kind of vague to me. The gates are good, but it still had that clunky cable shifter feel. With the lightweight ball, it feels a lor more connected. I can feel the synchro outer sleeve "click" over the keys instead of "clunk."

I almost bought the GR Parts aero stuff when ordered the car, but the price was getting up there, and I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the car. Front spoiler would pay the price for some types of driving.

Since I've decided I'm going to make the car a grand tourer, and just weekend-cruise the winding tarmac, I figured I may as well make it look better... :)
So I bought the GR Parts front spoiler and side steps. Also comes with a lip for the rear wing, but I haven't decided if I want to put that on the car yet.

Anyway...nothing like drilling holes in a new car

Really finishes the front end for me mate. It’s definitely an arse puckering moment drilling into the bumper but well worth the result. It’s a solid well made piece the TRD lip for sure. The rubber wing trim looks okay to me; just alters the profile ever so slightly

Alright. You talked me into it :)

FWIW, the parts are pretty easy to install. Front has all the templates and very comprehensive instructions. Side skirts, as well, but you'll find that the eight hole locations on each side are already marked on the bottom of the factory rockers. Hard to see, but they're lightly casted in. Tells you how to clean and prep the areas that are taped, and comes with 3M PAC Primer. A body shop friend tells me that once the tape sets, there's a good chance you'll remove the paint with it if you ever try to remove it...LOL. These are permanent-install parts, and now a part of the bumper and rockers.

Pulled the muffler and painted the tips satin black with Thremo-Tec 2,000°F paint and "cured" with a heat gun 😄

The ricer-blue tips were killing me inside a little every time I looked at them  If it doesn't stick to the stainless, I'll strip it and passivate it back to its natural state, or maybe even polish it.

I'll ask.

Got the certification paperwork from Toyota for the engine power and throttle response changes. Car feels completely different, with more power everywhere. What felt like turbo lag on transient throttle above 4,000 rpm was actually throttle lag. That's gone. Was worried about the throttle possibly being a little too aggressive, but it's not. I chose to leave the power steering and "Track" mode AWD split as-is.

You don't just go to GR Garage for this. I had to make an account with Toyota GR through Kinto, register the VIN, and some other hoops and questions to get through. A few weeks later, the GR Garage you chose for the upgrade will contact you for an appointment to get it done.

The power bump is only advertised to bring it up to the GRMN spec, with 390nm, but it feels like more than just 20nm, and it doesn't go away in the top end. It pulls harder from 3,500 to 7,000 than it did originally with the HKS exhaust. I asked about this and while being vague...was told that there's more going on than just a simple torque bump. With a completely stock car, you'll get 390nm and a little bit up top. But with the new engine calibration plus good exhaust, it's likely close to 400nm, and as long as the AIT stays in check, close to 300hp, JDM cars being about 270hp stock.

Next mod will be making a new intake to the air box, some insulation for the air box, and shrouding/ducting to get fresh air to the lower duct and engine room air out.

What was the cost, if I may ask?

Power bump and throttle response change was ¥88,000. If you include tweaking the power steering and the AWD split, it's ¥141,000.

I think it's a matter of support, as to why they don't offer it outside of Japan. Like when I bought the car, I could have optioned the close ratio transmission/low final gear set and clutch LSDs, but it can't be installed by a normal dealer. GR Garage only. Plus there's a lot of motorsport here where plated/registered/legal cars are used. Gymkhana, rally, etc. Toyota even has their own 11-stop rally series inside Japan where they even subsidize shipping competitor's cars around Japan. I think it's less neglecting other markets, and more than it's a lot easier to support in this market.

I'm told that it's the same part. One is the GR Parts aftermarket part number and one is the OEM part number. There are things for the GRMN that are for sale through GR Parts and have their own part number. Other things that aren't offered by GR Parts, you can't buy without an actual GRMN title. Like we can buy the driver's seat through GR Garage, but you can't buy the seat using the OEM part number through a dealer without a GRMN title. GR Garage doesn't offer the passenger seat, so it can't even be bought without a GRMN Yaris.

Hope that makes sense.

Makes sense, thanks for coming back to me!

Which idle-stop canceler kit do you have and how do you like it? I’ve heard mixed opinions on these. Some say they malfunction and don’t always work.

Sorry, I just saw this. The one I have is from Japan. They also sell a version that turns on the IMT every time. I've never had a problem with it. ALthough, if you turn the car off and then back on right away, it may not reset. It has a timer where once the car is powered up, it "pushes" the button automatically.
