Hi All,

Spoke to a few of you before about being an engineer and appreciating the GR Yaris Engineering.

In many posts people mention being an Engineer or into Engineering.

For me I am a mainly a Mechanical Engineer but also an Electrical Engineer.

Work at a Pharmaceutical manufacturer working on motors, drives, manufacturing machinery, mixers, homogenisers, pumps, servos, control panels, 0-20ma signal units, conveyors, water plants, boilers, HVAC systems, control systems, Factory Acceptance testing all over Europe for new kit (Not now bloody Covid), Commissioning kit, etc. etc. the list goes on and on.

From as young as I can remember I would take things to bits to see how they worked and at that age not being able to put them back together again :eek:

When the car was unveiled I needed to know everything about the engineering behind it and how it was designed and why it is the way it is.

I am just curious how many of us are Engineers on here and is this why we love this car so much, is it because we appreciate the engineering behind it.

Not a train driver... Mechanical engineer but have another two bits of paper as I progressed from hands on engineering to company management. Three universities all up which shows I can't make up my mind!

Worked in power and construction. Now self unemployed doing some consulting but mostly doing what I want. No idea how I fitted work in previously. Set up a nice little workshop with commercial quality albeit entry level lathe, mill, belt grinder, horizontal bandsaw etc. It gets a work out.

So much to do.

Not per se for the engineering. I can appreciate the engineering behinds many cars also from less 'attractive' perspectives like tooling, cost, emissions, assembly etc. In general, automotive is interesting because much is happening and it is generally very visible, although in later days more detailed information becomes harder to get by. Now I'm foremost trying to learn about the new kid on the block, the BEV.

I appreciate this car for the unapologetic focus on making it good to drive and handle, which sure is engineering too but foremost the philosophy behind it and investing time in the development in that direction. Engineering details by themselves aren't earth shattering, it's the unlikelyhood of the total package that appeals.

Spending lots of time at home with sick kids and currently recovering from their latest flu thing...

I'm a chartered electrical engineer although no longer doing it for a living - I do work for an engineering and technology company though.

I too drove my parents crazy taking apart anything new I got and, to this day, my daughter talks of my 'superpower' to fix anything.

I wanted the Yaris because of the engineering X corporate bravery. Very rarely does a major manufacturer go totally bonkers like this.
 
The way Toyota developed the GR Yaris ist the way I wanted to do it all my life: Making a rallye/race car roadworthy (the usual way is to improve a given car). How to do that - and never was allowed to do - I know from long-term experience in vehicle development. Just in time for retiring as graduate development engineer in endurance and vehicle testing Toyota delivered the long awaited and well developed car to me. Life is good 😊.

Mechanical Engineer here. Work in the water/power sector, was a project manager now finally a technical advisor (hate management/managing) . If I could be bothered to write words down I really should be CEng, whatever it’s worth now 😅😂

HVAC, Gas Systems, Water systems, dabble in civils. Much better at non compressible fluids than compressible ones 😂 I still find the number I deal with a bit mad if you think in personal terms. I tend to play with mega-watt motors, which I always equate to number of Bugatti Veyron “oh that motor output is equal to 1.6 Bugatti Veyron” 😂😅

Always been into anything with an engine, steam trains first as kid, jets as child, motorbikes as teenager and cars as adult. Love them all now. I chat to you all day about bikes, planes, trains and cars.

Love the engineering behind everything. I learnt most automobile engineering things by working on motorbikes and cars then applying what I learnt at work to it.

I find the hobby and work complement each other, without being too similar

I do struggle being an engineer and explaining what that means as 90% of people have no idea what it is.
Person “Does that mean you fix cars”
Me “No”
Person “But you do fix cars”
Me “Yes becuase I like to, not becuase I’m an engineer”

I literally explain my job as an architect who designs industrial systems and buildings. 😅

taxi - where you been?
me - offshore installing an oil rig
taxi - how do you do that ?
me - a very large crane ship
taxi - must be very big
me - about the size of Wembley
taxi - how does something that big float?

- at this point i know i am onto a lost end

me - I dont know, never even thought about it!

I have always found that the very best engineers come from practical experience (hands on) The best way is to start from the basics it helps appreciate mechanical sympathy.
I have never had a job that can be done from home, seen too many graduates come into the workplaces being promised rapid rise and promotions, with little practical experience.

This! Even though I went the grad route. I would have preferred the other way but sadly I can’t see it working in my field, the engineers I like most at work, all mess around / fix there own cars or have understanding outside our bubble.

I find it difficult to gel with grads which do a engineering course but don’t like engineering. They don’t seem to grasp anything outside of what is taught can’t apply other experiences.

Again it really depends on the engineering area, I can design, systems from home, but I still go to site / factory to get to the detail and see it finished.

I like reviewing things and saying “so how would you build that” and watching the face as they realise it’s impossible haha. Though I’ve designed a few things which were unbuildable before 😅🥲

Totally agree!! I was lucky and gained the hands on experience from an early age I have mucked around with things for as long as I can remember then I did the college and Uni thing later. We had a Grad in for an interview and was like a rabbit in headlights when he saw the plant and I was asking him about how he would tackle replacing big mechanical seals with pressure locking systems. The young guy I hired had hands on experience and had done an apprenticeship and 8 months in and he is loving it and learns first time every time.

Same I do project design work for new equipment and complete lines coming in and CAD drawing at home but go into the plant when new equipment arrives and needs commissioned etc. or for when it all breaks down :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Good work/life balance........
 
Engineers are like software developers. I.e. it is (unfortunately) just a title nowadays and doesn't say much about any actual skill in any matter, the number of skillsets is very broad and so is the breath of competence. Some engineers can (acquire the skills quickly to) project, source, design, build, test and verify 'anything', or at least get the right help when they can't do it all, and have it work perfectly from the first try, others wouldn't know where to start and can just do as they are told and are just a piece in the machinery.

Me and my wife are both engineers on paper, and while she is very good at her stuff (managing) we couldn't be more different and she has e.g. zero knowledge or interest in the workings of a GR Yaris...

Like others I've always built my own stuff or tried to fix stuff. Used to work in automotive and my first shock was that there exist many engineers that aren't interested in motor vehicles working there, they are specialists in the system they work with but don't have the overview. I loved my role as I got to fix anything, as designed by other engineers, that didn't work, didn't hold or was difficult to make/assemble etc. So I got to redo stuff from calculation, remodelling, assembly to testing out function out in the field, so I really learned in depth about a wide number of parts/systems. Good fun.

Now I am responsible for everything a company produces in turbine and pump systems, so need to keep tabs on everything from design and calculations to testing, verification and documentation and everything inbetween. Quite a challenge and lot's of stuff that can go wrong...
 
Hi, Engineering you say ? Its my passion and life.....Run a small Engineering shop repairing/manufacturing low volume parts for companies around Bury Lancashire, we have been going 29 years now through the ups and downs over the years, absolutely love the variety of work that comes in (all different jobs) and what gets me out of bed in the morning. ;):)(y)
