HELLO THERE

Just signed up as I'm currently in the market (in Australia) for a GR Yaris :) I've been a Toyota fanboy my whole life - my first car - in my profile pic - was the beautiful ST184. Have had some other JDMs since then. Had always dreamed of the Mark 4 Supra, but I've moved on from that one

Being a fanboy, I'm excited to get my hands on Toyota's first legitimate performance car for what - two decades? I'm discounting the 86/"Supra" as I want that Toyota badge on the steering wheel to represent the company who created the machine through and through (true fanboy here lol)

I'm hoping to purchase the Yaris before Chrissie, but I won't rush the decision. I haven't actually driven one - been a passenger though - but knowing me, I'll love it

Hoping to have a great time on these forums, mostly as someone looking to learn, but hope to contribute where I can

Cheers all,
Bond.

What do you drive?

G'day mate and welcome to the forum. I was severely tempted to buy one of those Celica's back in the day, and in that colour.

I have a GR86 but would love a test ride in a GRY to see how good they are.

Guten Tag

The GR86 must be quite fun, I have an MX5 myself and have driven a BRZ so I understand the roadster dynamics. I think you'd enjoy the Yaris

The Celica was a lovely car. Here in Australia we only got the 5S-FE which is a Camry engine, but I still have very fond memories of the car

What other cars have you owned?

Welcome - fellow mk4 Supra fan here, my ownership experience was a poster on the wall most of my childhood right next to the Nissan R34 😄

Yep they're a great car. Happy to say I've owned an R34 in my lifetime - however due to licensing restrictions it had to be NA. RB25DE NEO, but still not what it was designed for

How does the 86 compare to the 350Z?

I have never driven an MX-5 although like the Celica, I was looking at a mk1 back in the day to replace an MR2 mk1 that I had as a daily driver but they were too expensive at the time.

I haven't had a lot of interesting cars in my driving history other than an Escort RS1600i cabriolet, a Fiesta RS1600 from new and three MR2 MK1's in the last ten years. I have a BMW M2C which was my daily drive before the GR86.

BTW, I think the location that my VPN is set to dictates the flag shown in my posts but to confirm I am a Brit :)

Yep the first gen Celicas were a little different, but the ST184 definitely did its job - you wouldn't have been disappointed. Had considered an ST205 for my purposes now, but I just think GRY will serve me better

The M2s look great - had they been Japanese - they would have been a serious contender lol. But I need to trust that thrashing it around won't cost me an arm and a leg, so gotta go with Toyota

Good chat my pommy brother

Nice!

The 350Z sounded fantastic, but you really felt the weight of the car. I found myself easily speeding in the 350Z and had to push it to feel fun, the 86 is the opposite; feels fun at slow speeds. The VQ engine in the 350 is something else though.

I feel you. My MX5 I'm keeping around for this reason - the epitome of "slow car fast" - it is a very engaging and rewarding drive. I suspect the GRY won't be in this category, but I'd like to learn how to properly drive it, i.e. on the track
