Andy asked me to split out the graphs showing a visual split between different colour choices for ordered cars into its own thread.

I'll keep this post updated as more people join the forum and confirm their orders in the main Order List thread.

I welcome any suggestions for improving the visuals or what other data you'd like to see.

Many thanks @beorg , much appreciated 👍😎

The colours available on the GR86 are the same in all markets, they have the same paint code, but for marketing purposes they may have different names. In the US the names are all different but the UK names are the same as those used by Subaru for the BRZ which is sold in the US market but not in Europe. The Free Of Charge , FOC, paint option also differs from country to country.

In the U.K. Metallic paint is £645 and Pearlescent £965. The only true Pearlescent paint (which contain mica to reflect light giving different colour effects ) is Pearl White. Both Electric Blue and Ignition Red AFAIK do not contain mica or metal flake and are in fact a “flat” or “solid” colour with a clear coat applied over the paint.

The U.K. 2022 launch colours are below , I hope this helps 👍

Charts updated with now 160 confirmed orders. No significant changes to the overall split and no new autos added. I have also added a decimal point to the percentages displayed, as numbers didn't up otherwise.

Thank you Andy for providing the background info on colour choices in the second post!

@beorg many thanks for the updated charts 👍 It would have been interesting to see if Red had been more popular if Electric Blue had not been available 🤔

Any thoughts on why Electric Blue is so popular , it definitely “pops” and stands out rather than “blending in”. The CEO said it’s very “shouty“ and liked it , so I get to like it too 🤣

This sort of blue has been around for years but does seem to be very popular with a lot of manufacturers at the moment 🤔

Agree I went for the EB myself as it looks similar to the Miami Blue by Porsche imo and that looks mega in the flesh. So if I squint without my glasses on on a foggy day and look out on the drive I can pretend for a second I have a 992 not a GR86 it’s not a bad second prize 🤣

No need to squint those Porsches are everywhere, folks won’t see many GR86s , not this year at least 👍

Black and white too prone to showing dirt and marks for me, magnetite and sapphire a little dark as I’d like the shape to be showed off more.

The red and electric blue a little bold (would like to think I can fly under the radar a bit) but was very tempted by the latter as it reminds me of the BMW Laguna Seca Blue and some Porsche colours.

Plumped for ice silver in the end, I thought it looked fantastic in the picture below - a slightly conservative choice perhaps but reminds me of my much missed silver grey M3 CSL and looks almost pearlescent in some pictures. Plus it was cheaper than the Toyota “pearlescents” 😂

Seems it’ll be one of the rarer colours, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing!

Edit: I really don’t like black wheels (as you can’t see the design) so might be tempted by a change of colour (I like the grey as pictured) or maybe different rims (pref lightweight).

If I wasn't such a cheapskate I would have probably ordered Sapphire Blue instead of Crystal Black.

It was my first new car order and I'm used to buying crap secondhand the idea of paying an extra £965 for a color change when otherwise it's identical still seems silly to me.

Of course, now I'm seeing the logic more but I think maybe a change of wheel color to dark bronze or maybe even white might look great after a year or so of leaving it alone.

I've seen a few black ones on YouTube and it still looks great.

Updated the OP with 7 new cars. Overall split remains largely unchanged and is probably more or less representative of the total GR86 orders in the UK due to the high sample number (167 out of roughly 400 cars ordered).

Miami or Mexico Blue are very much the vibes I got from the Electric Blue, especially with its all black accents. It's not a Porsche 911 or a BMW M by any means, but the GR86 still looks and feels like a sports car, and it's small numbers are gonna make it fairly unique on the road, regardless of the popularity of the electric blue. After all, if we extrapolate the current number of Electric Blue orders from the forum (47) into the total order of 420 (rough estimate), we would still end up with fewer than 120 Electric Blue GR86s on the road. Not many cars can claim that title!

I considered every colour available, Pearl White seemed too plain, easy to get dirty and difficult to colour match due to pearlescent paint. I'm coming from a Black Metallic already and that is impossible to keep clean or free of visible scratches, Sapphire Blue and Magnetite Grey seemed too dark to do the justice to the GR86's shape, and the black wheels disappear with dark everything else so would need repainting. Ignition Red was high up on the list but the missus preferred blue and Silver Ice was a strong second choice, but ultimately missed out to Electric Blue due to not feeling special enough. So that was the winner through process of elimination. :D

@beorg thanks for updating the charts 👍 With a decent sample size what we are seeing ought to be representative of the U.K. allocation. Choosing a colour without seeing it is always difficult at least there is a decent spread across all of the options. I wonder if things would have looked different if Electric Blue had been the FOC option as I think it was in some markets, possibly even more being that colour.

I‘m pretty sure a solid white would have had a lot of takers too, it would have been on my initial list , it took the lions share of the GRY as the FOC option.

I've heard reports from the US GR86 owners that the paint is really thin and they are complaining of chips and marks. The paint on my GT86 was thin but i didn't have any of these issues. Anyone else hear of this?

I’ve seen similar comments, but it doesn’t matter what the paint is like if you drive up close to folk or roads are crappy, some folk may just be more prone to stone chips than others purely through their driving habits.

I’ve seen some photos of the front of GRYs that look like they had been shot blasted and others were pristine. Every car I’ve owned has had chips at some point , even PPF won’t stop a big enough stone at 70mph.

It does open the debate about PPF or just touch up and repaint at some point down the road. 🤔

I'm planning on getting mine ceramic coated. Hopefully that will help.

Ceramic coating won't prevent larger stone chips from damaging the paint I'm afraid, and unless you only drive the car on clear summer days with empty roads and garage it for the rest of the time, minor wear and tear will start showing eventually. Modern paint is water based and most manufacturer's won't put a thick enough layer of colour and clear coats to make chips invisible or easy to correct.

PPF is more effective at preventing these from occuring but it has its own disadvantages, the main one's being cost and durability.

I do think paint correction and ceramic coating from factory is a good idea, as the car will not be delivered to you in perfect condition and you want to seal already corrected paint as opposed to just letting the clear coat be exposed to any harm.

I will probably do a full detail myself every 6-12 months to polish out minor scratches and fill in any visible stone chips that bother me.

It will definitely help with keeping it clean , a lot easier to get dirt off but offers very little in the way of chip protection , it’s a very thin layer of a ceramic

I'm always wary of what American owners find. Was the same when the Type-R went there for the first time and I'm seeing similar complains about the GR too. Soft paint and 2nd gear grind. I don't fully believe either. Japanese paint is a bit softer an is more susceptible to bird crap as it etched into my Dad's pain on his Swift and that was a metallic. Chips are about normal. Brother has some whoppers on his 86 but it does an M4 commute in all weathers so it's expected. I'm still undecided on PPF. Ceramic coat is a definite though.

Interesting points I must admit I typically keep my cars for 2 -3 years (cannot be many people who have had 3 GT86’s 😊 and a BRZ) and ppf etc is never something I have looked into / bothered.
Reading posts / feedback on it perhaps I should. I will be doing modest non motorway miles 3k p.a in it but will include a few track days a year. BUT this will be a keeper and will be the last petrol car I purchase I guess so I am keen to preserve but use it as intended and not be a garage queen.
I dont know the costs for PPF / Ceramic but if it makes my weekly car clean easier then I am in!

Charts updated, now with 172 cars, getting closer to the half of unconfirmed 400 cars allocation!

Share of automatic cars continues shrinking at now just over 6%, proving that most of us want this sports car in its purest form.

Still not a single confirmed Ice Silver or Pearl White automatic, despite these remaining popular choices for the manual version of the car.

Sapphire Blue is now the least popular choice, with only 15 confirmed orders and a smidge under 9% share of all cars. I think it's a very interesting colour, maybe it doesn't show off as well in the photos or in the online config.

Electric Blue continues its dominance, but the share is closer to 1 in 4 cars now at 28%.

Sapphire Blue is the most exclusive colour😉
