Looks like UK legislation is being planned to ensure emissions are not being exceeded in use on newer cars, specifically where this is caused by the removal or adaptation of original emissions control system components.

This would likely mean removing the GPF would prove unrealistic as it’s very unlikely a car would pass the particulate standard without one.

It is a curious loophole that cars are only bound to general legal limits, not what they were built and tested to achieve. I guess this fixes that and aligns the UK with most other countries in Europe.

If it's a universal limit rather than vehicle specific particulate limit then our 1.6 three pot should be okay

This is the actual proposal that can be responded to:

It'll all depend on implementation and would be at minimum 6 months from next August to be put in place. It's main focus is still older diesel to begin with. Plus this is the key bit for our cars meaning perhaps a later target:
"There is no requirement to maintain the functioning of the ECS of Euro 5 or 6 light-duty vehicles or Euro VI heavy-duty vehicles. "

How would an imported car be impacted? Imports don’t come with GPF?

It's a good question. I guess the CoC will list what standard the car complies with and that will be what's used.

Whether that aligns with the contemporaneous UK-supplied model, or some looser standard 🤷‍♂️

It is a good question as IVA doesn't appear to be mentioned at all in the new proposal.

In the IVA there's the Jap section, potentially a standard JDM may get minimal scrutiny:
"Mass produced vehicles from Japan To prove compliance with the listed standards, a Japanese de-registration document (or equivalent, original not a copy) must be provided when the vehicle is presented for test. It must contain a Type Designation number. Such vehicles will only need to be tested to certain sections of the manual. However, in the case of modified vehicles, the original compliance may be invalidated, and this must be assessed on a case-by-case basis."

"Exhaust Systems 1. Must be securely mounted. 2. Must have all components secure. 3. Must not leak (see Note 1). 4. Must be fitted with a silencer. 5. Must have a measured sound level not exceeding 99dBA (see Notes 2 & 3). "

"Method of Inspection Required Standard All vehicles Raise the engine speed to around 2500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower. Hold this speed steady for 20 seconds to ensure that the inlet and exhaust system is properly purged. Allow the engine to return to idle and the emissions to stabilise. • Assess the engine idle speed. • Assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe at idle. • Rapidly increase the engine speed to around 2500rpm or half maximum engine speed if this is lower and assess the smoke emitted from the tailpipe. Allow the engine to return to idle. 1. The engine must be idling at its normal idling speed. 2. The exhaust must not emit dense blue or clearly visible black smoke for a continuous period of 5 seconds at idle speed. 3. The exhaust must not emit excessive smoke or vapour of any colour during acceleration which would obscure the view of other road users."

"Method of Inspection Required Standard When checking the exhaust emissions, the engine must be at its normal idle speed and normal operating temperature. Engine speed and temperature can be assessed either subjectively or by reference to manufacturer’s or other reliable data. It is expected that all vehicles should be able to complete the metered emissions check without the aid of external cooling aids. If examiners detect that a vehicle is about to overheat or pose a heat/fire risk to the vehicle they are to abort the emissions test and record the reason on IVA 30. Vehicles fitted with spark ignition except: • Vehicles with an effective date Pre 1975 • a rotary engine vehicle having an effective date before 1 August 1987. • a 2 stroke engine vehicle • vehicles fuelled by CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) in respect of the requirement to check Hydrocarbons Conversions that are not based on M1 vehicles may comply with the applicable requirements of the original base vehicle. Documentary evidence of base or incomplete vehicle approvals will be deemed acceptable, Modification to the exhaust system length after the rear silencer will be permissible without further test In the case of a motor caravan, ambulance, or hearse the requirements according to the category of the base or incomplete vehicle based on maximum mass may apply. An EC type-approval 1. There must be access to the exhaust tailpipe(s) to allow the insertion of the analyser probe. 2. The exhaust gas must not contain carbon monoxide content exceeding the limit for a continuous period of 5 seconds 3. The exhaust gas must not contain hydrocarbon content exceeding the limit for a continuous period of 5 seconds. 4. The emission limits must be met as prescribed in the flow charts below for CAT1 or CAT 2. "

There's lots of flow charts that follow but mostly relating to older cars, so arguably this could be the workaround if you're someone that absultely doesn;t want a gpf and road use.

Ummm, my car sometime hangs on a higher idle and then settles over a period of between 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it wants to idle around 1100-1200

Or they'll tighten the laws regarding imports coming in?
