GR86 Flashing third brake light

Dragging out an old thread, but I'm going to order one of these and I'm getting it delivered to a mate in Vegas. He's going to bring it to an event I'm going to in Oklahoma in October. Postage goes down to $4.99 rather than $25 for international shipping. So if anyone is interested, please let me know, before Monday. Current conversion is approx. £42 plus whatever postage over here would be

Thanks for this, bloody sods law I've just ordered one! 🫣Anyhow there's an active Labor Day discount code LD24 which should reduce the cost to you by 10%👍

I'm a bit torn. Like the idea, but think it might piss people off in traffic as it flashes every time you press the brakes. Would be nicer if it only did it after you'd been moving more than 10mph or something.

Also...not sure if we ever got the answer, is this an MOT fail? I know it ls easily removable but still...

The cheap version works fine. I may have a free one if anyone wants it. A previous car I bought came with it fitted. I took it off straight away but can't remember if I binned it or threw it in the 'car electrical' box.

If it flashed under hard braking that would be fine. Flashing every time you brake seems wrong though.

I may be able to make a module that flashes the 3rd brake light under heavy braking. There is a version of the Arduino that contains an accelerometer. It should be simple to program it to flash an output under heavy deceleration.

I was hoping to find someone who could make it switchable, so a switch in the cabin to select between sending the signal to the flashing unit or bypass it for standard operation. Don’t know how easy that would be to achieve?

That would be very simple. Effectively what you need to achieve this is to connect the 3rd brake light either to the input of the module or the output of the module. The input would give normal operation, the output would activate the flashing.

You would only need a 'single pole, double throw (SPDT)' switch and enough three core cable to run between the switch and light.

Well, I've three units waiting with my buddy in Vegas - I'll have to wait until mid-October until I can pick them up though!

Taking this thread full circle, I just posted out two of these units to the interested parties, all in with UK post about £40. Fitted mine at the weekend and I'm happy with it.
