GR86 Exhausts

Less than £500 for the axle back as all I wanted was noise and to be able to hear the car as I still like to drive a car by ear rather than looking at a rev counter. But without the need to mess about with the rest while it's still in warranty etc. Got it from Funky Power but they are doing discount for GRZoo people. Say you're from here and Ross recommended you and it will be less. It's gone up a bit since Ross and even I got mine with inflation.
axle backAssume its this one ?

Has anyone just tried replacing the middle pipe with a straight one, no middle box? I want just a bit more noise but not too much and I like the look of the existing tips.

Wouldn't recommend doing that, the mid pipe is only a resonator and specically tunes out drone, if you were to have a straight pipe you'll induce drone at a specific RPM, and not increase the volume much through the rest of the rev range.

Where the midpipe is changed on catback systems, does this not introduce drone? Or can it be tuned to not introduce drone by changing it?

Depends on the design of the midpipe provided with the catback.
I've got a HKS catback system which came with a different midpipe, and it includes a Hemholz resonator chamber specifically to filter out as much drone as possible.

It could yes, which is why a lot of exhaust manufacturers give you two options, resonated or non-resonated. The resonated ones are definitely quieter and should in theory get rid of any drone. I've gone with a resonated option as I use daily, it doesn't sound as loud, so is less 'sporty', but is easier to live with.

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who has tried this.

On my might mod list 👍

Did you discuss with your dealer their view on if this may affect warranty at all? Or not worried.

Also curious to know if you turned the piped sound off in the cabin now?

Thanks for sharing, great photos before and after.
I had my first 10 K mile service this week and asked the service manager if a cat back exhaust would affect warranty in any way and that it was purely for a bit more noise, the response was that it wouldn't affect the warranty, headers and a remap were a grey area and a potentially would.

New GR86 owner here - read all 32 pages of this thread and went through a huge range of emotions to the point where I registered to join the fray.

- Was unaware of the GPF until just now - from my understanding US exhausts that seem a bit too loud might be just fine.
- I thought I'd decided on an HKS Hi-Power Spec I but after reading @Bathroom_Security 's experience I'm not too sure
- Had never considered cobra / remark but there's lots of happy customers specifically in this part of the world / forum. Not seen any videos of them moving though - do they make nice little pops on downshifts, etc?

Has anyone tried the Tomei dual-exit titanium exhaust? - I hear it has a tone similar to the AWE Touring but a little quieter and a LOT quieter on the start-up, but with more weight/performance gains.

Would be good to hear some exhausts if anyone is around the Kent/Essex area!

I have the Cobra resonated. I promised to do some moving videos, but I always forget about that when enjoying the car 😅
It does nice little pops when heel and toe, specially from 4th to 3rd! I am from around Bromley. If you ever want to hear it, just let me know :)

I have the HKS L-Spec II which I'm largely happy with, but it's an expensive option. It's louder than stock, but is still one of the quieter exhausts. Built in Hemholtz resonators, so no drone. I'm in Rochester.
There was a chap on here who lived in Dartford (guessing you're near Bluewater?) and had a Remark, but I think he ended up selling the car a couple of months ago.

I had a frd who is not on this forum installed Tomei One. For him, it is too loud 😂

It's grown on me although definitely want more noise top end and less drone lower down. As the colder weather sets in I wonder if it'll get louder again.

It's too loud cruising around driving normally you just look like a twunt with a couple of fart cans on the car. I imagine it's somewhat irritating for people as it is me.

If insurance wasn't an issue I'd replace that front pipe. But I suspect it would end up invalid and my insurance has become rather expensive just like everyone else's now so don't fancy adding more mods to the car.

The car makes 1 fake pop if you rev the engine from idle and let off at around 3 or 4k rpm, this happens when you downshift and rev match. The stock exhaust makes a heavily muted pop and sounds like a broken metallic noise, the HKS exhaust system turns that into a pop.

It doesn't pop under any other circumstances.

This reminds me....when I was fitting the transmission mount the othe day, I noticed that the front pipe now has a lambda sensor in it, guessing for the GPF. Worth mentioning it in this thread because it will make swapping front pipes a bit trickier.

Pretty much the same for my Spec II, it will make a slight pop when rev matching, but not otherwise. Which I'm glad of, I don't mind the occasional genuine pop or burble from an exhaust, but people who intentionally get them mapped to pop and bang all the time should be fired into the sun.

Yeah, fensport mentioned this actually. They have removed it from sale for now and are in the process of coding it out pending them running their car in. It throws a warning light.

Enquired with Cobra Sport Exhausts if the resonated mid-pipe could be bought on its own at a later date, should their non-resonated cat-back system be found to be too loud or droney after being fitted to my GR86. They said "Yes, we can certainly do that for you". I think I know what I'll be buying myself for Christmas ;)

Newbie here, - Just ordered my GR this morning, but knew from the test drive that I'd need an exhaust.

I think I've narrowed it down to the HKS Spec L or the Apex'i.... just wanted to say thanks for the great thread!

Neighbours already hate me as my current daily is a 1UZ swapped Hilux, which is pretty loud at cold start, so this will be an upgrade for them :D

I should imagine it will be quite easy to bypass, I don't think it will be a Lambda, more likely temperature or differential pressure which is easier to fudge.

Can I have the carbon tips then please ?
Erm, no you can't. I've had reports that you've been quite naughty this year so Santa won't be visiting. Whereas he'll likely have to hire a Luton Van when he visits me because I'm an angel 😇. I'll be going for the TP33 outverted slash-cut tips to keep it OEM looking. I have a pair of 4.5" gloss CF tips sitting on my garage shelf which would just need a 3" to 2.5" adapter piece to make them fit the GR86 pipework if I fancy a change.
