GR86 Exhausts

Spec L tips on the Spec L II exhaust would be the one for me

Can't decide on an exhaust system if in honest. Looking like the Milltek non res at the moment will be the winner.

HKS Hi-Power Spec L (2nd gen - 32016-BT004)

This i think is the one for me, available in the US, so maybe possible to import via ebay but its a pricey item compared to the Milltek Non res.

Aside from the tips, I think the Spec L II is pretty much the same, but a tad quieter. Which suits me, but I get some will want a bit more volume.

It is pricey, yes; and I very nearly went for the Milltek based on the better price, but I was put off by that reputation for cracking. The HKS does seem to be better built.

Got an update on my AWE Touring, it's due on 23rd of Feb to be shipped from the US, so should be here and installed in March :) can't wait, this car is too quiet.

Fitting my Invidia Q300 tomorrow, will try and get some before and after video clips to post but apologise in advance for lack of editing skills!
Q300 was my favourite exhaust for the 86... but it was a bit too quiet sometimes. But I had always hoped with a high flow front pipe mod it would have been the best ever tbh. Had a great tone, and very little to no drone.

If I don't get on with the AWE, I'll be looking for a Q300 again tbh.

Installed today and I’m not impressed at the moment. It has a really nice tone most of the time and just what I was after not being too loud but there are two really annoying resonance zones at about 2000 and 4000 rpm which makes driving it annoying as I sound like a chav.

Any advice would be welcome after viewing this:

(Revved to about 4500- 5000rpm each time).

No idea if exhausts have a “bedding in” period but didn’t think so?

I had a Q300 for a few months on my GT86 but I got rid because I found it a bit much loud at around the same engine speeds as your vid. I wouldn't have minded further up the range, but at 2.5K, it happened even when I was just gently pulling out of junctions, etc. However - at the time I had a catless header and a sports cat, which I assumed contributed to it.

I think brand new exhausts do tend to quieten down a little after a awhile, as carbon builds up inside the pipe, but whether it will be enough to improve it, only time will tell I guess.

Also, props for putting the in effort with making a decent comparison video :)

I've heard videos of Q300s on the first gen and second gen and they do sound different. I think it will bed in and become less harsh but the other videos on the tube I've heard do still have a bit of resonance.

Sorry it's not what you were after, I can see why your frustrated doesn't sound good to me.

That sounds awful, Q300 on GT86 was amazing... this... not so much.

I’m away this weekend so can’t fiddle with it but will be trying to see if something is too tight somewhere next week.

I won’t be keeping it if I can’t eliminate the two problem rev range zones.

It will be back to the drawing board for me then. When I got this one I was considering the Borla and see they are revising the GT86 one now specifically for the GR86.

That's a shame. Wrobz. The Q300 was well regarded as a subtle for the GT86, unfortunate that it doesn't translate tot he new model as well.

I found another video with some decent sound clips of the HKS L Spec II. Whole video appears to be an in-depth review of the system, but being in Japanese, not much use to me. Plenty of shots of them lifting various parts of the system and then looking delighted, so I assume they are saying it's much lighter than stock. 19.10 onwards for sound clips.

It might be worth considering different exhaust hangers (both softer and harder).

BLAH BLAH, INSANE RAMBLE BLAH BLAH.
hahaha <3 Last time :p haha I promise. haha

Please, stop trying to justify your decision. Everyone knows its all about the AWE Touring Edition, if you can't get an Asbo with your exhaust. Where's the fun!?

haha (I'm totally not trying to justify my purchase at all - although I am now having to watch it on youtube for the 12312321312312th time.)

You're welcome for the audible porn <3

I really go between liking the APEXi more one day and then AWE the next day.

@James-UK please come to Japfest in April so we can all get a proper exhaust comparison 😂

Those of you interested in a little extra noise, without breaking the bank may be interested in an option I've gone with (for now).

Like many of you, I have found the idea of spending £1500 on a catback exhaust quite hard to justify. I considered going down the custom route, but eventually got offered a good deal on the first Remark Axle Back exhaust to the UK.

The exhaust is as basic as can be. Quite simply a backbox delete with some larger tips. Often, this kind of system can result in a lot of drone and rasp, but videos of US cars gave me some confidence.

I'm happy to report, after having the exhaust fitted for around 300 miles now, it's pretty good. A little droney off throttle around 2k and 4k rpm, but cold starts aren't dreadful, and sound on throttle is great. Loud, but not ASBO by any means.

Some videos to demonstrate:

These exhausts are available to order from Funky Power in the UK. I can't necessarily share the price I paid, but I would suspect this solution being sub £500 to the general public.
