GR Yaris Engine Sound Enhancement: Keep or Delete?

I wondered what you were on about for a second. I thought I'd posted it but came back to a tab with the response in there and was like, oh, right, I didn't.

I’ve never had ESE in a car but find the idea of it rather odd. Personally I’m not interested in adding more ‘sound/noise’ for the sake of it and I’m just not sure why Toyotas engineers thought it necessary either?
Everything else about the GRY seems so genuine and mechanically on point. I could be wrong but, ESE outwardly feels like it’s trying to make up for something that is inherently lacking in the car? I guess that is why so many have replaced exhausts, intakes etc.
But I’m going to do as a number of you have suggested and try it with the ESE on and if I don’t get on with it then I’ll get it turned off.

It's mostly regulations, with all the flow restrictions in the exhausts, even things like turbos suppressing the engine note it makes it hard to make a cars natural tone sound anything other than a hair drier and actually get through relevant regulation.
Err, yeah, sorry... derailed things a bit...
The thing I meant to mention is with the sound things turned off I get to hear the waste gate clearly and that's quite satisfying. With them turned on, it's not so apparent.

I like the fake noise and the fact that outside , the exhaust noise is quiet. I’m getting old so loud exhausts are not for me anymore .
Exactly this. I also wonder whether, if it wasn’t well known that the engine noise is enhanced, most people would realise? The original testers from Car magazine didn’t, and I have had to point it out to many passengers, not one of whom realised. I think it sounds fab inside the car.

Totally agree . I think it helps the car not get too much attention imo . Having had a few Abarth Competizione when younger , with the awesome but loud record Monza exhaust , the relative “ stealth mode “ of the GRY suits me fine .
... and without it, it more or less sounds the same just lower volume and is still enjoyable imho.
And personally ESE did grate with me as I did notice, willingly or not, I wasn't hearing the actual engine.
To my best knowledge, it uses a frequency signal from the engine (rpm or even knock sensor?), used to generate a recorded engine note in the right frequency and volume based on load. So it is well done and much more true then other attempts by manufacturers, but it is not a direct amplification of the actual sounds made by the engine which would include recirc hisses, subtle variations in turbo spool sounds etc

I’ve had RS Megane’s with and without Cup packs and that was what sold me on the circuit pack Yaris. I know it’s a bit different with FWD vs 4WD but the difference between Megane with & without LSD was just night and day. For me it wasn’t even a consideration; the price of a GR Yaris was £33.5k! Not knocking the non-circuit GR’s. Horses for courses & all that!
Oh, and in topic, I’ve turned off the ANC & ESE and I’m still undecided. Shame it can’t be switched in the menu. I do like the ESE noise sometimes but other times I find it annoyingly boomy.
If I hadn't been told in the reviews that there was augmented noise in the car, I wouldn't have known.
Sounds fine to me in my daily driver. Passengers have commented that it sounds good when they're in the car, so I tell them it's piped in because it sounds as loud as a gnat farting from the outside.
Not actually sat in one that had it turned off. Will need to do that at some point to hear the difference.
My thoughts are that the augmented exhaust sounds with stock exhaust are fine however it is up to individual preference. Even the boosted exhaust sound inside the cabin is quite muted. I didn't mind it on though was ok with it off. With aftermarket exhausts, at least with mine, it created a booming noise which was very annoying, even on low throttle. Noise off and that went away. Noise cancelling is still on, mostly little difference but I think it makes a significant improvement over coarse chip bitumen.
