GR Yaris Design or function

Had my white CP 5 days now and was wondering whether the body kit extrusion on the rear wheel arch has any function or is it just a design quirk? What's it called?

I stand to be corrected - but I believe it's a regulation to do with tyre/ tread fitment not protruding/being visible past the edge of the body panel when viewed at a certain angle.

100s of makes have this little protusion on the rear, look around any car Park and youll notice. It ensures that the wheel is covered as per newer Regulation (30 degrees in front and behind tire must be covered bla bla bla)

The neighbouring item that's still a mystery to me is a tiny bit of clear film on both rear arches.

What's that supposed to be? If it's for paint protection, it only protects a very small area, so more of a joke in that respect.
