I’ve learned that most newer cars have this, the GR86 is no exception. I wonder what would happen if people were to speed and was recorded (and is) - this could simply be handed over to the police and you’d be arrested for speeding. What’s to stop them doing that? Doesn’t this put people off owning such cars? Just makes me nervous ….. of course I’ll be sticking to every speeding limit at all times …

Pretty sure cars have been logging speed for a long time... nothing new

I wouldn’t worry about it, it's not telemetry really, they are just basic logs. See it as an evolution of a trip computer and service indicator. The ECU doesn’t have the capacity or memory to be logging and storing data against time, it would just be too much. It will been logging simple counters and maximum values which is of no use or interest to law enforcement. Say your ECU has logged a maximum speed 140mph, who is to say that was done illegally?

If ever there was an occasion for the "sweating profusely Airplane meme" it was after seeing this!

My previous car used to log every journey over a rolling 3 month period, which could be viewed in an App. It recorded the number of vehicle starts, driving time (start/stop), distance and maximum speed. Amazing the numbers you could get on the roads around Fife! 🤫

As it also records GPS coordinates, it wouldn’t take much to work out you’re in a public road and then figure out the speeds are illegal.

I know lost cars do it these days, still made the whole buying experience a little less satisfying knowing the car is watching me and logging where I am and how fast I’m going.

Are you talking about manufacturer giving away this information to the police voluntarily? That's not going to happen, imagine the negative publicity this would raise.

Now if it was the other way around, and it was the fuzz requesting that data from manufacturer then they would already need some grounds to do it - they are not going to bother with a speeding ticket and the manufacturer would be wise to ignore it in that case.

Either way, isn't this data collected to enable the SOS button feature and not policing the drivers?

I think I’ve looked way too much into this and possibly creating myself more anxiety than is needed here.

I think you’re right about the SOS feature - also, called Toyota today to talk about another aspect of my order but ended up talking for about an hour; the chap was clearly an enthusiast. The data is a 30 second rolling snapshot to collect in the event of a collision or emergency. There’re not out to ‘catch us’ as it were and I was surprised to learn how many cars now have this technology installed.

I’ve not heard of any instances of this data being used to shop people to the police for speeding.

However, the sharing of telematics data from new vehicles with the EU is going to become mandatory and can not be disabled. It will be anonymised initially but once that’s all up and running I full expect the next step to be the commission showing how much speeding takes place and then removing the anonymity mask under the premise of road safety and automatically fining motorists for speeding.
