GR Yaris Buyers regret

Hello all,

Some of you might remember me from a year or so ago, when I inquired about your experiences with the GR Yaris. Long story short, after two years of waiting I still don’t have the car. I am now told it’s going to arrive in September, and I STILL didn’t get to drive it yet. I am now more and more considering cancelling the order and just getting something else. Does anyone here have any buyers’ regret regarding their car? Did it maybe not live up to your expectations? If I come across as jealous that’s 100% correct, I am jealous

I had/have buyer's remorse hugely because aside from my home it has been my biggest ever purchase. But, whilst the vehicle has its flaws (there are many) I look at the prices of other new vehicles and come to the conclusion that I bought something very special for an extremely good price! There is nothing directly comparable in terms of engineering/performance/single mindedness versus cost to purchase. I have has as much fun driving cars costing £500 but, in terms of engineering and value the GR Yaris is an anomaly that will probably never be repeated.

- I don't get to use it as much as it ought to be used

- When I do use it the roads are so bad I can't get the best from it

I did a few miles today and realised that the Yaris is very much like the Triumph Street Triple RS I tested recently. It's got a devilish side that encourages you to drive in an irresponsible manner, but gets jarred and jostled around on the road rather than making smooth progress. It does feel special though; each drive has a sense of occasion.

No buyers regret here but cars are subjective so if you haven't driven one yet ask the dealer to get you a drive, even if it's a used one that's for sale.

Either that or pretend to be a potential buyer and see if a dealer will let you try a used one.

Either either that or see if someone on the forum can take you out in one.

I bought the 'Standard' car and today I drove a few rutted and uncomfortable roads and questioned how I would/could live with the Circuit Pack as a daily driver. I am not sure I could. It is easy to find the limits of the Dunlop tyres but the ride is reasonably comfortable but fidgety at times. I am not sure I have gotten close to the limits to induce the diffs (which I don't have)! Regardless, the chassis is fantastic and the car feels planted so I feel as if with a few tweaks here and there it could become near perfect for most people.

Mine's a convenience, so we have the same suspension & diffs etc. Certainly wouldn't want it lower or stiffer, but we're all different!

Absolutely. I test drove a CP and enjoyed it. For me (rightly or wrongly) I wanted to opt for perceived value and get the cheapest variant with same Body/Chassis/Drivetrain/Power. As a road car it is perfect for me. The marginally more compliant ride is a bonus. As a slight aside, a visited my hometown a few months back and found the ride in my standard car near unbearable so I dread to think what it could have been. Horses for courses etc etc.

My Circuit Pack car is the most comfortable car I own……stiff yes, but rides pretty well I think!
No buyers remorse here by the way!

I’ve only had mine just under 3 months and yesterday passed the running in 641 miles. I had stoically refrained from full acceleration. Was able to experience a bit of quick cornering but could not give it full throttle on the exit, till yesterday. I’m used to grippy, well balanced cars like Exige sand elises but the Yaris is an absolute joy in the twisties. It grips so hard and feels so planted. Lovely steering feel and great gear change.
One of my clients who was waiting to see if I was going to keep it as I had given him first refusal bought one with a fair few miles on it when I told him I was not going to sell mine. He actually disliked it to start with as he was back to a manual. He was used to flappy paddle with Astons and Ferraris. After a week with it he absolutely loves it and even with a McLaren MP12 4C in his drive he takes the Yaris as it is so much fun.

Zero regrets here after 13 months and 20,000 km. I’ve now been driving it for as long as I was waiting for delivery, which is something to be celebrated I think! Can’t imagine a two year wait, well done for having the patience!

Still look forward to every journey, still find excuses for taking it out or going the long way, still regularly surprised by its talents and just how much you can lean on the diffs to drag you round corners at silly speeds

I love knowing I have it and all the engineering genius hidden away, however I do find myself tootling around often not gunning it! Its easy to just go with the flow and keep an eye out for the potholes..... BUT when you have the chance, the road clears, its been resurfaced and theres no-one ahead it is truly sensational and reminds me of first getting it 2 years ago. Would definitely regret getting rid.

I’m from Slovenia, so I know what rubbish roads feel like haha. Hopefully there are some other Slovenians here who wouldn’t mind giving me a ride

Thanks for all the lovely comments. I’m from Slovenia so the options really are limited. I’ll stick around with the order for a bit while I suppose, can’t lose much I guess waiting a bit longer haha

As a few others have said my only regrets come from not using it enough, and not using it enough on roads where it can shine. Will try and rectify that with the next 6 months!

The big question is what would you replace it with? Every single car has its flaws, you will just trade what they are. Even if you can't use it all the time, the option is always there. In my eyes it's a perfectly practical, not ridiculously expensive to run or buy so it's not like you consciously throwing money away.

If you are going from A to B, and have to contend with everything the roads throw at you, traffic pot holes, etc. Might as well do it in something special, your choices (from new) are running out.

I’ve made many mistakes but I’ve really enjoyed modifying it and will continue to. Something bigger, more expensive I’d probably spend more time mollycoddling it, checking the weather before taking it out etc. Although it’s been treated well, I still have to keep reminding myself ‘it’s only a Toyota’, we haven’t got many years to enjoy vehicles like this and try and choose roads and times to get the most out of it. It’s a keeper, but a keeper to drive.
