Didn't fancy sticking too many miles on the GRY this summer doing regular commutes, so took a punt on this...

Took the wheel spacers and aftermarket air cleaner off, 195 cross section tyres makes for a lot of fun in the showery weather we've been having...it's so easy to get the car out of shape without being at licence-losing speeds - in these restricted and difficult times, I don't know how else you can have cheap fun behind the wheel with as minimal risk as possible.

Many years ago my ex had one of these (though may have been the lower spec sport rather than a 133 assuming that’s what this is?). Was a lot of fun to drive though, especially as there was a bit of turbo lag so you’d effectively get two waves of acceleration and being pinned back into your seat when overtaking. Looks like a really nice run around car!

Yes this is the 133 Cup, so it sits a little lower than standard. No turbo…

The steering is a little dead, that was always a feature (or lack of) with these, but it’s still predictable. Hilarious fun swinging in hard and overwhelming the front tyres. The most fun comes above 3800rpm and you’re never driving at insane speeds.

They’re great cars by all accounts. Same chassis as the Mk 3 Clios, so 172/182. The steering is a little light and vague on the RS Clios too, weights up nicely in the corners though. Part of the fun with the 172 Cup is maintaining momentum, so can imagine it’s even more of a feature with 40bhp less.

Weirdly I was looking at these and a Suzuki Swift sport. For what reason I can’t explain, I already have a mk6 fiesta ST which is similar.

Something I love about a small car. Especially ones which are shorter than typical.

Hope you enjoy it.

I like running around in this most of the time. Basically big family van I converted to 6 seats and all the camper type conversion stuff that makes it quiet and comfy

Early start, I decided to take the Twingo on a 'blast' down the A272 to Winchester - noted as a 'great road' - even though I'm sceptical if it really deserves to be on this list -

Started in Ansty and headed west as the route towards Heathfield is pretty average and the best sections are Wisborough Green to Petworth and Petworth to Midhurst (arguably more fun heading east on the return) - rather catch that when the traffic is low at that time of the morning. There are so many corners where you could easily be 50% faster in the GRY, yet the 133 is on the edge of grip. Tyre squeal and lots of body roll within the speed limit is a win! Done in most of a tank of fuel, 140 miles door to door, didn't stop and got home just as the traffic was picking up. Great fun.
