Howdy,
Just thought I'd check to see if/how many F1 fans we have here on the Zoo. The wife and I only discovered it last year via drive to survive and have since become pretty obsessed with it to be honest! I'm going to monaco this year by chance so have tickets to watch the qually. I mostly follow Mcclaren as a team but fairly agnostic as there's always something going on up and down the grid. Watched the first round of formula E for the first time last weekend also, quite enjoyed that.
 
I've just come to the realisation that this post is probably better served in the motorsport channel but alas, I cannot seem to delete the post so 🤷‍♂️
 
Yes I've been to 3, Spa (Kimi won), Monaco (Button won) and Silverstone (Vettel won).

I lost some interest after the debacle at the last race of 2021 but still watch every race.
 
Only race I've been to is Suzuka in 2015. What an experience and probably the best one for my first. Got the first corner so saw the start and all the way up the hill. Was epic.

We did have a fantasy F1 league last season and I'm sure we'll organise another when it's published.
Forgot to check who won our league. :whistle:
 
Been to a couple of Silverstone Gaps - one in the 80s and another about 2015ish.

Still watch it but prefer WEC / GT racing these days
 
I've followed F1 since the early 80's. I was working for Lotus back then so used to get complimentary pit passes and was fortunate enough to get to a good number of european races. Nowadays I make do with watching it on TV but still enjoy it.
 
I've also pretty much watched every race I could since the 80s, not always live but normally on the same day if I'm not at home when it's on. I tend to root for Ferrari, not that they've have had much luck recently, or seem to mess things up just when they seem to be doing well, but I also watched through the Schumacher era, so have seen them through some good times.
I've never been to an F1 race in person, the mad cost they charge puts me off going to see it at Silverstone, I think I'd rather go abroad and do it as part of a holiday if I can one day.

Yeah I feel ye, still a top three but we'll see how next season goes with their shake up in leadership, could be another rocky season for them before they find their feet again
 
I've been a big fan for years. Finding it a little bit fake/hyped recently and 2021 was a real disappointment. I've been to a few races, was lucky enough to win Paddock Club tickets for Silverstone once. I had the bucket list of trying to drive as many of the F1 tracks as possible. I've done pretty well with the EU tracks (even managed Monaco by absolute chance), raced at a fair few too. I actually don't support any team in particular, usually the drivers that I feel are punching above their weight in a particular season.

I usually record and watch in the evenings, so please no spoilers in forum topic titles please :)
 
Driving the tracks is a cool thing to do. I've driven Silverstone, Brands Hatch and old Nurburgring. I'd love to do Spa and CotA - they looks like fun.

I agree with the cost of tickets. My wallet still feels the pain of paying for 3 seats at club corner in 2018. Still, it was good to see Hamilton fight back from last after being punted off by Kimi on the first lap.
 
We used to be avid fans & loved watching it on Sky, but are not Red Bull fans & nobody is even close to them, its a one horse race, so I have just cancelled my Sky sports subscription.
 
Have to agree that it looks like a Red Bull runaway again. The question that begs to be asked though, is, is it legal? They had an 18 mph top speed advantage in Saudi, and in the closing laps were over a second a lap quicker than Alonso.
 
Been watching since the early 80s, Its the only sport I really watch / follow. I also strongly disagree with 2021 result! I don't particularly enjoy sky coverage, typically just watch race and quali, used to enjoy the build up more in the old days of free to air - think they had more time pressure back then so less waffle and (attempt at) hype. More excited by a good race than any particular driver winning - but I want Lewis to win an eighth championship after the AD fiasco.

I'm quite an avid follower but I tend to do so more privately. Since Liberty Media took over there is much more focus on drama, sandals and sensationalism rather than the actual racing. Sky are the worst for fueling the fire too.
Since DTS and Michael Massey's circus season it seems almost impossible to have a sensible conversation online about F1 without people wanting to slit each other's throats. You all seem like a nice bunch though so i'll dip my toes into the water.

It would be nice to see more of a fight at the front but I certainly don't hold anything against Redbull and definitely not Max for their dominance.
Let's just hope that Ferrari continue their upward trajectory so they can at least keep mixing it with at least one of the Red Bulls. It's a shame we didn't get to see Australia play out with Max in the race, Ferrari looked like they were in for a chance at the win due to the mechanical tryre deg Vs the usual thermal, like they were in Vegas last year - only this year they're closer to RB on pace. They lost the chance to prove themselves on merit when Max retired.

Sazuka showed that we can have a really enjoyable race when there are several viable strategies making use of different compounds. I'd like to see more of this in the future but typically races without cookie-cutter strategies are unfortunately few and far between.

What are you guy's opinion on DRS? I feel the drivers are far too savvy with it these days, especially now they're all aware of the CarLando towing trick. In sazuka we were once again robbed of some potentially great fights, because drivers would much rather wait for DRS to do an easy overtake than send it like Checo through 130R or into spoon or the Chicane. DRS overtakes are really boring to watch IMHO. Often a massive anti-climax after watching the hunt happen over multiple laps. Then there's DRS chicken which I won't say any more on....

In 2023 we had some different tyre allocation rules tested. Although I thought some of these rules - mandating quali on a hard tyre in Q1 for example- were a bit daft It's sometimes good to try out new things. With Quali being one of the best parts of the race weekend, i'd much rather see them try some new things out with the race instead, specifically involving DRS.
The-Race's Gary Anderson suggested giving everyone DRS until they are within 1 second of the car in front. Although this has some potential downsides, it would certainly bunch up the field and I'd like to see it tested.
