Because of the current situation (delays due unknown changes to the cars) there is the rumor, that the car has to fullfill the new EU legislation:
- blackbox
- speed warner
- collision blabla

If this is the case, there would be no more reason for the 2 year limitation.

I looked at the german website and can't find it anymore, but i'm sure if it has been there.

Any ideas if this got removed?

The car would have been type approved before July 2022 meaning it doesn't need ISA. The blue press car in the UK was registered June 6th. so unless they release a facelift model any further models sold until July 2024 wont need ISA fitted.

With the current regulation ISA can be turned off.

If this is the hold up I would expect the current cars built and already in the country would be scrapped? retro fitting such a system is going to be a massive ball ache, if it's even possible too.

This would be great news! I originally wanted to order the GR86, but the orders in my country have been a shitshow lmao. Two months back I got the response from my dealer that the car won't be coming to Slovenia anymore, but now it seems that it still might, so in all regards, still a complete shitshow haha. I ordered a GR Yaris instead, but might snack up a GR86 aswell at somepoint, especially if they will keep selling them after 2 year period

Yeah it’s crash safety regulations and nothing else, redesigning the shell would have made it uneconomical to market. I really hope it’s all just bluff because of the popping engines (which will be sorted) and nothing to do with ISA, switchable or not I bought the car as it promised to be the last cheap thrills sportscar and nanny state bs has no place in such a car.

The GR86 has only 2 years because it’s roof design no longer meets European safety regulations in 2024. Nothing to do with what’s listed above

"bUt buT BUt wE've lEfT the EU???"

;)

Anyone have more info on those crash regulations? I'm not worried, just interested as to what they are.
If it's to do with the roof, I'm guessing some more stringent rollover protection or something? The current GT86 has a roof about the thickness of tracing paper, so guessing the GR is the same.

GR86 will be weaker, because they changed it to aluminum

Ahh...yes. Forgot about that. Yet also more rigid from what I've read so far. Good news.

Its all to do with GSR2.

GSR2 is an umbrella term for a group of regulations, split into the following categories:

  • Restraint systems, crash testing, fuel system integrity, HV electrical safety
  • Vulnerable road users, vision and visibility
  • Vehicle chassis, braking, tyres and steering
  • On-board instruments, electrical system, vehicle lighting, protection against unauthorised use / cyber attacks
  • Driver and system behaviour
  • General vehicle construction and features

Somewhere across those criteria, the GR86 does not comply without extensive redesign as mentioned by Toyota themselves...

@Mantho Toyota can't be that stupid that they build a load of customer cars that are not type approved?
I don't believe they are inept. I have no doubt that whatever the supposed delay is will be sorted and cars will be delivered to customers. I also have no doubt that in the interim there will be a load of speculation, claims of insider info and stirring going on that will worry the easily worried.

Right, seeing all that speculations, and not getting any detailed info from Toyota UK/ or dealers I decided to get some insight from EU dealerships (won't disclose which country), I have been told that (in that country) cars are being "on hold" till September as well at the moment due "Park Distance Control issue" (maybe not being Installed at all haha).

I remember, when I ordered my GR86 through Toyota UK, my initial order confirmation pdf had a parking sensor listed in pdf. It got removed after the car went into processing order though. So it might be that UK cars are having the same Issue? Discard this, if those cars were not meant to ever had those sensors at all.

Also not sure if the dealer was honest with me, so again - it is just something to consider.

Speculation time, so this is probably all wrong, but maybe Toyota felt compelled to do a u-turn on removing the Rear Parking Sensors from the original spec sheet and for legal or marketing reasons they have decided to add them back in after the first cars were built, hence the delay?

There were some other minor items missing from the original specification in the updated doc and issues have been raised with the Toyota Press Fleet Manager here on the forum which he was escalating with the HQ.

It would be concering for the early builds though as presumably that PDC installation would need to take place at the dealerships or in Derby, but I can also imagine instead of drilling into existing rear bumpers they may be waiting for replacement ones to be shipped.

I get the point about aesthetics and parking sensors, but , the GR86 has a relatively long bonnet , without them how long will we have to wait for the first “I’ve damaged my front bumper 😭😭😭” post ? I’ll give it less than a month 🤔

Driving a GT86 since 2013 and never had any issues...
