GR Yaris 👍 Positives - what do you love about the GR Yaris?

Spotted this glancing through Auto Italia. Kinda sums it up. It is the new Delta Integrale.

You can derive huge amounts of fun out of a Fiat Panda because it is at the edge of grip at much lower speeds. You’re right, to get that similar amount of fun out of the GRY of course requires more speed -which is inaccessible to most - not least in the level of skill required to do it.

 its great fun sliding my c1 at 30mph on a roundabout

thats because its running a high compression ratio for a boosted engine so can run at lower revs like a n/a engine and then when needed pile the boost on to make it feel bigger
Also fairly aggressive timing advance helps.

Another factor is the 3-pot disguises somewhat how high revs one is doing, so that helps a bit too relative to other similarly powered engines (all with higher cylinder count...)

But I like it so who cares why ;)

We're so obsessed with lap times, acceleration times, and fastest down the road etc when making choices, and therefore calling the conv. pack and base car Dunlop tyres for shit tyres, while they probably are a lot more fun... As for aftermarket wheels, people fitting 255 as road tyres, well it's a free world but is that really more fun? And isn't fun the objective with this car? A little chassi movement doesn't mean you must be a rally champion either... Oh well...

As I explained to the M140i driver at the traffic lights recently, when he enquired “what the f**k have you got in that?”

It’s a bog standard 1.6 3 pot Toyota Yariiiiiiiiiiisssss…..”

The lights went green halfway through the last word… not sure how much he heard 😂😂😂

For me, lightweight, small ,great handling and grip. Oh, and fantastic brakes.

Agreed the engine feels special, keen to rev for a turbo, not too laggy and great torque when on boost.

Mostly because the GR is enormously fun to drive.

Yes, except it says the GRY is a bit inaccessible... All it needs is a bit less grip which I keep going on about, but that remains a tough sell against the deeply seated performance car belief that more grip is always better...

I don't think there's anything wrong with your opinion in all honesty. GR is a fun car, but you can also have fun in a 'worse car', with less grip. Plenty of cars that are legendary for being not exactly super fast, or super focused, but still a treat to drive, especially at road speeds.

It's to me about the accessibility of the fun, the GR has an insanely ceiling to it, but to utilise it you have to be on the spirited side more often than not... my missus has an i30 and it has the horse power of two large dogs, and I drive that thing closer to the limit than my car ever is. Mostly because you end up a license losing speeds way too fast.

Might be worth an experiment popping the Dunlops on though at some point hah.

For me it's the instant get up and go at low speeds. Second gear being my favourite.

Lightness. I still smile at the weight of the boot.
The 4WD system. It's epic.
The performance.
The general squatness and sturdy feeling. Car "feels" fit for purpose.
The brakes.

The feeling of being one with machine when you drop it into 3rd for that corner and hoof it. Never gets old. Makes me grin.

I love the looks of the GR, especially from the front. My wife describes it as looking mean and she is not in to cars in the slightest :D
I love the seats, the go-kart handing, the gearbox & the brakes are just amazing.
Since adding a few little mods, I love it even more now that it goes & sounds like a rally car down the road

Only had the car 6 days so not using all the power at the moment but even below 5k it’s quick enough. The main things for me are the feeling of solidity, fantastic suspension, steering and brakes, amazing handling and phenomenal grip. You only have to think ‘corner’ and it’s behind you. I have a Circuit Pack by the way.

Of course all this is known but another aspect I’d point out is the perfect weight of the controls: clutch is very light for such a car, the brakes have just the right amount of servo and I love the steering weight. Even the steering wheel buttons and column stalk controls feel perfect. It’s my first Toyota and I assume they’re the same on their other cars but very impressive. It just makes it so easy to drive. Can’t wait to put some more miles on the clock.

In short, what a car!
