Its been a while since I've put an update here. Today I fitted my long-awaited front pipe that I had costom made by JDL in the states. I mentioned it in the exhausts thread
here.
Here's a pic of it next to the decat pipe that was fitted by tuning developments when i got the turbo kit installed.
Its the first time I've seen either up close / without any packaging. The weld quality on both is outstanding. The big manufacturers could learn a thing or 2 about quality from the independant outfits.
Fitting was relatively straight-forward. As usual, making the car safe to lie under on the driveway is often the most time consuming part of the job when working on the 86.
That said, fitting the front pipe to the overpipe was a massivr pain in the arse at first. After calling it a Fu£%&*ng C%^& for about 20 mins, i checked the gasket and of course the holes didnt line up.
The flange on the new pipe had oval shaped holes, the flange on the front pipe fits the smaller end of the oval, and the gasket had hole spacing to mach the larger end. I opened out the holes on the gasket and then it fit fine first try.
I was quite suprised when i fired up the car to leak test it. It's quiet. My car is never quiet.

I have to say that I'm quite blown away to the difference this front pipe makes to the sound. Most notably, the volume. My car has been really quite loud for a long time, with this front pipe fitted, the cold start isnt even very bad. I know catalytic converters mute the sound a lot, but this is a lot quieter than i was expecting.
When got the turbo kit fitted, i expected it to make the car a lot quieter, but in conjunction with the decat front pipe, it made it louder, with quite an obnoxious overrun with the wastegate open.
It sounded awesome on the throttle, but was a bit much the rest of the time.
The combination of turbo plus a catted / resonated front pipe is actually quieter than the stock front exhaust half - its significantly quieter than the AWE touring on an otherwise stock car.
I Had a small test drive immediately afyer fitting, but i just went for as much as a propper test drive as lake district bank holiday traffic allowed and the difference is profound.
It is signifocantly quieter, but the sound itself is just better. Its back to sounding menacing in an understated way. There's a great UEL grumble and a decent bit of volume on throttle but everything sounds smoother and a lot more refined. I might slightly miss the volume when pressing on, but probably not much as it still sounds great, but where it really excells is that it all calms right down again under normal driving. The tone is very deep, probably thanks to the UEL + AWE touring and no drone or resonance anywhere.
Downshifts are now a couple of muffled pops rather than the salvo of automatic rifle fire that i became used to. It did used to sound very race car on a spirited drive, but arriving at 30mph to turn into my neighbourhood no longer sounds like i'm coming to do a drive-by, which is nice.
I can go on long journeys without noise cancelling headphones again and i wont set off my wifes car alarm if i linger on the driveway... Bliss
I need to get the tuning checked but the car feels no slower. In fact, it feels faster. I'm sure it isn't but maybe the lack of a LMGT soundtrack makes it more suprising.
Lastly, but also very important. It no longer absolutely F£%^ing stinks!
One thing i wasnt prepared for with the decat is the smell, and what I know comes with that smell. I need to get it emmissions tested, but i find it hard to imagine a very high quality 400CPSI cat failing this.
Im very impressed and very happy with my purchase. Especially as it means i can stop endlessly looking at front-pipe options now!
