GR86 GR86 - GT86 Performance Pack Brembo Brake Upgrade Thread

I have been pondering.

Using the US site I found I priced up the entire set, cross referencing the Toyota part numbers to make sure they work. (green)

Obviously this does not include shipping and tax, which will be "healthy"

Notes:
  • I cannot find the Toyota part number for the front dust shields - so it is a Subaru one.
  • I have seen videos where they re-use the existing brake hoses and handbrake levers, but Toyota DO have different part numbers listed for the Brembo setups. - UK sourced Goodrich will probably be cheaper, and a bit of an upgrade.
  • I also went for locally sources pads and disks, as they are heavy to ship, and Toyota charge silly money for them.
  • You probably do not need the backing plates, but I like to stuff to feel OEM or OEM plus - I hate hacked brake covers.

For comparison, from Fensport:

The non Brembos will need covers hacking, see my earlier point.

I'm almost sure that you do not need Brembo specific dust shields from 17' models up. I'll let you know for sure when I'll be installing Brembo GT BBK in my 23' GR86 soon.

The video posted in the original thread suggested you did, - and there is a Brembo specific part.

Of course you could just trim them on or bend them back like a savage! Will still work fine.

The dust shields are expensive for no real gain. They aren't in the way at the front, I can atest to that from the previous gen car. The rears you need to trim a bit off to fit around the calipers it's not the disc that it fouls.

I'd be cautious about some of these kits. Whilst the initial costs are cheaper, brakes have consumables, replacement pads and discs can be hard to come by, or be expensive. That's what put me off the official GR monoblock kit, the replacement discs were a third of the cost of the entire kit. You want something that's well supported.

The Reyland AP BBKs are the most popular choice on the old car, the 4-pot CP9200 and 6-pot CP09040 calipers are used across multiple platforms meaning there is a good choice of pad compounds for reasonable cost. Their kits have crept up in cost over the years (were originally <£1500) but they still represent good value. Replacement discs are also easier to come by from Reyland or AP themselves, whom are UK based. They also don't adversely affect the brake balance which some kits do.(y)

Rears you can use genuine or knock off 2-pot GT86/08+ Impreza STI 'diamond' brembos. I picked up a pair for £179. They require no adaptors and bolt straight up. You just need to be careful on which rear discs you buy as there are multiple versions with the wrong PCD and height measurement.

Yikes, I forgot to mention that I'm doing fronts only đŸ¤ The rears indeed do need trimming or swapping for STI/PP backing plate.

I take it these bolt straight on with stock wheels no issues?

The clearance on the Reyland AP kit is very good for most wheel, but I bet they'll need a spacer to clear the stock wheels.
I can potentially test them in a couple of weeks when I do a summer/track wheel swap on the BRZ.
Cool. I'm thinking I'll do MX72's and some better fluid for now and keep money aside for it later. I will be upgrading wheels at some point too but didn't want the expense of doing both at the same time

They should fit based on the fact the Brembo setup goes over the stock wheels without spacers, they seem to be slightly chunkier than the APs

Does anyone know if the GT86 models with bigger brakes had specific larger dust shields and if so what the part numbers are please?

Here is the full part list for the PP brake kit, granted these are the American part numbers, they should be the same over here:

  • 26292CA070 caliper front left
  • 26292CA060 caliper front right
  • 26261FE000 caliper bracket / tie bar front
  • 901120131 front caliper M12x54 bolt (need 4)
  • 26300FE001 rotor front (single, need 2)
  • 26296FE100 pads front (4 pads)
  • 26232FE010 front pad retaining clip
  • 26231FE030 front caliper pin (need 4)
  • 26231FE040 pin retaining clip (need 4 in the front, same in the rear)
  • 26540CA030 brake hose front left
  • 26540CA020 brake hose front right
  • 26290CA030 rotor dust shield left front
  • 26290CA020 rotor dust shield right front
  • 26297CA010 caliper repair kit front
  • 26692CA070 caliper rear left
  • 26692CA060 caliper rear right
  • 901000326 rear caliper bolt (need 4)
  • 26700CA000 rotor rear (single, need 2)
  • 26696FG000 pads rear (4 pads)
  • 26632FE001 rear pad retaining clip
  • 26631FE000 rear caliper pin (need 4)
  • 26231FE040 pin retaining clip (need 4 in the rear, same in the front)
  • 26541CA050 brake hose rear left
  • 26541CA040 brake hose rear right
  • 26704VA010 rotor dust shield left rear
  • 26704VA000 rotor dust shield right rear
  • 26697FG000 caliper repair kit rear

You don't really need them as the shield sits behind the brake discs. They are needed on the rear though as the bigger caliper fouls the shield.

Much appreciated @ZN8 :)

I'm thinking I'd like something there to go with the 330mm AP kit if I can. Disks are 2mm each side bigger but also slightly thinner and calipers similar size so I'm thinking there's a good chance of them working with minimal adjustment.
