GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Started to fit my Ducktail this morning.

Drilling and fitting tomorrow.

Added an O-ring to the nearside rear light to increase the gap between the light unit and the paintwork. It must have moved slightly in use as it was ok when I did the drivers side in December.

Dropped the GR86 off at Preserve & Protect in Johnstone this morning at 6am. Recommended firm on this forum and Pistonheads. A six bay operation with some tasty vehicles going through their hands on a weekly basis. Mark and his team will do their magic on the underside of the car and hopefully that will provide some better protection than normal against the fairly harsh salted road winters we have in the UK. Collect it again same time next week. If it's going to be a keeper, makes sense for that 10 year period 😁👍

Think I've got a delicious average speeding ticket in the mail, completely spaced out and was a bit heavy footed on the drive home last Friday. Had a blast in the car at the weekend though, saw lots of others enjoying their cars too.

Not this weekend but last weekend, had a brick dust cleaning nightmare.

Idiot builder fixing next doors porch was grinding bricks in their driveway. Before I knew it the whole car was covered in brick dust 😵‍💫

Moved the car to a safe distance and narrowly avoided murdering the now nervous apologetic builder - “sorry mate do you want me to hose it down?” - then spent the next 3 hrs cleaning it.

Kudos to @Philevo6 for his advice on avoiding scratching the car while decontaminating it - although I think I used about 3 litres of CarPro reset in the end lol

After pics for attention:

That’s not brick dust it’s the paint fleck 🤞

Went down to Zoldani Auto-Salon and had Xpel PPF fitted to the headlights. After a quick valet, the car is now under cover in preparation for the forecast snow/rain and won’t be out until it goes to P&P (Johnstone) on the 24th. Night Night Njord! 🥱

I have a grey GR too. Where can I find that advice on avoiding scratching? The neighbours will be starting a building project sometime this year and it's bound to generate beaucoup de dust.

Bought some things, just between us ok, dont tell the missus

I finally have my car back! It was rear ended around 8months ago. Some good news is the repair is superb.
I have taken all interior trims off around the damaged area, looked underneath, I can't tell it happened.

During that time I started an unhealthy habit of collecting bits from japan.
Looks a bit much I do say in this photo, but my goal was just to replace the dull grey plastics, which also turned into the gloss black accents.
Hopefully on the car it's not too much, most of the bits are spread around.

Now the long job of fitting them all.

Track day at Bedford Autodrome on Monday. Unfortunately was told to stop drifting by 10am 🤷‍♂️

I have eco tyres on my otherwise stock car, and I know some people have complained about understeer on track. What I am consistently finding though, is there is plenty enough torque and grip to turn in on the brakes and rotate the car on the throttle in the corner. It just means that there is a non-zero probability of a slide at some point 😁

I've had that issue at Bedford, super frustrating. What's the point of a track day if you can't safely enjoy/explore the car?

Its quiet straight forward, if you search on eBay for GR86 headlight protection film, it from Pre-cut PPF and Tints, costs £19.99 they are already cut to size so no trimming required. Have a search on you tube and there plenty of tutorials but this one explains it well:

You just need a spray bottle, microfibre cloth, a squeegee and a slip solution which you make from distilled water and a few drops of baby shampoo.

Took me about 20 mins in all as the lights are fairly flat, you don't need the tac solution as its just used to stick areas where its tricky to smooth the film over sharp corners and there none on the GR86 headlights

At the end of the day you may as well have a go, if it all goes wrong and you end up taking it off all its cost you is £20 and 20 minutes

Asked an Xpel outlet for a quote on headlights protection - it was £83.34+VAT!! I also enquired about bonnet only - £270+VAT!! I'll be ordering ready-cut from the Internet and probably leave the bonnet to fend for itself.

The kit is sitting waiting to be fitted this weekend. Doesn't look difficult for £20 and some patience with the correct tools and approach.

My headlights were £80 inc from an accredited Xpel installer. That price for the bonnet is actuall quite good believe it or not! Quotes from an accredited installer in East Anglia were £395+vat for just the bonnet itself, plus an extra £450+vat for the front bumper area (versus £415+vat locally). I've had quite an extensive fit but, not complete: the only panels that I don't have PPF on are the doors and the back end (apart from the rear arch area).

Last of the big spenders! Key cover from Ali Express £2.71 inc. delivery:) Also picked up a set of GR valve caps from Etsy. Hopefully exhaust arrives next week🤞

Mmm... my quote for front bumper area was £270+VAT, same as for bonnet. I've ordered the headlight kit from eBay anyway and will give it a go when conditions are OK (have to do it outside). As well as the obvious no wind or rain, does anyone know if there's a minimum temperature below which it would be unwise to fit? I suppose it would be a good idea to avoid full sun too, but that shouldn't be a problem for a while!
