GR86 Standard audio - my sound settings

Some of us got the DSP and while it is "better" I'm not sure it's amazingly better but for £100 it's fine. The presets are good though as I lost patience with trying to manually tune it. Focals, doing some tweaks on just the headunit, some sound proofing and making sure door cars are pushed in before screwing in makes quite a big difference anyway.
I've measured and set up custom filters for the Puzu and it has made a really positive improvement for me. If anyone wants to try my settings but not fiddle with the app, message me and I will send you the .jib file that you can just upload to the DSP

I don't have a laptop for it. Only have the app. The Preset 2 on the app is great for me with a little tweaking, mainly dropping the volume down so I still have some control between volume numbers. Can play a wide range of genres and all sound good. One thing it has highlighted is how important the source quality is. Lot of my stuff is old 128k stuff so I'm making sure it's 320k going forward.

My point was that while it is a improvement having a DSP, just Focals on their own and some sound proofing do work far better that stock anyway. If someone didn't want the hassle and cost of installing it or couldn't do it right away it's fine not to. It's a definite improvement but I'm always wary of confirmation bias. I bought the DSP on a whim which isn't like me at all but for £100 I don't mind the gamble on it.

This. I think the DSP is definitely an improvement but I wouldn't have bought it if it was much more expensive. And it takes a bit of fiddling with the get the most out of. Which is why I am going to message Myodo and steal his hard work instead :D

Totally agree. 320k files for the win.

I tried FLAC files on a usb stick but the car doesn't see them. Interested to hear if anyone has managed to play FLAC files

did my first 160 miles today and got to say I thought the audio quality was wicked - beyond my needs/expectations.

BTW Everything being relative; a “full-on” audiophile might see/hear things differently.

And that's where the slippery slope could start as you get spoiled by a decent setup. But there's always more you can spend for something that's technically better so it's good to keep perspective. I recently bought a Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar with the sub. Wasn't cheap, many said go for a surround setup but it would be too invasive, TV is in corner of room etc. The Sennheiser is amazing and it really highlighted what I was missing out on. Watched Top Gun and Tron and it was the best I've ever heard it. Sure there are better options. Money no object I'd pay for a nice Focal or Monitor Audio setup with speakers in ceilings and go full cinema. But that's thousands and is totally overkill.

Ah, I know that slippery slope.…

Reminds me of a mate who keeps telling me to try his “all singing all dancing electric mountain bike”. No doubt it’s fantastic but I don’t need to be spending thousands on an electric bike..

Ignorance is bliss. :)

I wouldn’t say I’m an audiophile particularly but it’s a stark contrast sadly when put back to back even with the harman kardon in my company wagon. I’d probably be a lot more forgiving if the engine and exhaust note wasn’t similarly “a bit meh”.

You don’t need a motor to manage that, I’m in the full denial, don’t look at or add up any of the receipts level for anything related to my non electric mountain bikes.

I suspect a substantial drug habit would be far less expensive !

I bought my forever road bike last year to really spur me on into cycling more as my old one was on it's last legs. Latest wireless Ultegra Di2, all carbon, loads of nice bits, really light. But because of outside factors and some injuries I've barely done 300 mile on it. Not saying how much that is costing per mile but it's a lot.

I’m not a roadie but I can probably hazard a relatively educated guess given I’ve got two bikes with AXS drivetrain and dropper post and 3 of the collection are running carbon wheels. I do get and ride mine every weekend so I do feel a little less guilty about it.

Frustrating when it’s injuries factoring in to the lack of use though! Thankfully I’m one of the few of the group I ride with not to have any major tumbles, a bone break or similar in the past 12 months even with a trip to the alps in the mix. Hopefully my luck holds and yours improves 👍🏻

Off topic but it wasn't a fall or anything like that, more overwork of my feet from walking as I walk loads too. But sometimes the metatarsals flare up and I struggle to walk on it. Will be buying new cycling shoes in the sales too which should help relieve the pressure in one spot.

Have you had a bike fit done? A couple of friends who cycle on the road had varying joint pains, genital numbness etc and said after years of pissing about with different shoes and saddles it was a revelation. I think one of them didn’t even need to replace components, the bloke moved his cleat, saddle and stem position and tweaked the bar roll. 👍🏻

Im really mindful of less is more when it comes to mods on the car, sound deadening is one area in particular, I get a sheet behind the speakers but when you line the roof area, boot, rear 3/4 and doors, there is a bit of weight that adds up. Yes you get a quieter cabin but at the same time adding weight and CoG goes up.
Just looked on Amazon and for 2mm sheets your looking at 3.7kg/m2, now if you say go the whole hog you are looking at say 9.1sq/m based on a compact size car for the GR86 (again from an Amazon guide so please treat this a ROoM) so you are looking at just on 34kg which is the same as 34 bags of flour (I’ve just checked the cupboard) of dead weight your carrying. Again it is all down to personal preference and what you are use to and the cars you have had as reference. Interestingly the OH thought the car was perfectly acceptable from a road noise perspective which was pleasing and less earache for me. Granted we are infrequent on dual carriageways or motorways for any length of time and if this is where you spend a good deal of time I get the reasons for.

Last bike I had a bike fit and it helped a lot. But I'm overdue new shoes as they are years old so was going to wait until I got those and get another one done.

I’m with you - if I wanted an s-class or a 992 I’d have bought one. Cosseting, efficient, competent, so much so that they lack character and personality. [GT3, N/A etc. accepted]

I wanted close to a Caterham as possible: a proper daily that could deal with my typical week: 200 miles motorway + 150+miles of A&B road + occasional continental road trip + occasional track/AUTOsolo. Something I could live with as a daily - carry toys, the odd [very] passenger and/or a couple of dogs.

Got to applaud Toyota [GR team in particular] for what they have been able to achieve at the price-point.

I’ve limited sound deadening to 1.7sqm of Killmat [2,35 kg/ 1 sqm] as part of the audio upgrade - adds an air of solidity but an acceptable amount of weight.

Before I drove the GR86 I was slightly concerned about the road noise reported in reviews. But now I own one, I wonder what all the fuss was about. Sure it's noticeable but I find the car easily liveable on long journeys.

Whilst I won't be adding soundproofing myself, I wouldn't worry about adding 10 or 20kg weight to the car if soundproofing is important to you, you'll never notice it.

To be honest, I could do with losing 10kg myself.
