GR86 Running in engine

To those with a few miles on the car (i.e. run in or more) - have you noticed any change to the engine characteristics?

I doubt I’ll run mine in for 1000 miles, but I’ll run it in more than a sales persons car 🤣

Likely 400 miles under 4k, and add 1k of revs every 200 miles.

I’ve had 15 new cars over my lifetime, 10 Co motors, 5 owned (Golf 16v, Pug 205 1.9 GTi, Golf R32, BMW 123d, Audi A4) and none have ever followed full run in, and none have ever had issue.

In the modern era motors are built better, and tolerances really only warrant being nice to the motor for a few hundred miles.

If the engine is fragile, well that’s why its warranted.

I remember when I was a wee lad my brother in law (he has zero mechanical sympathy) having a new Ford Cortina company car many years ago, picked it up a few days before making a journey from Devon to the Midlands up the M5 at around 90 all the way with only a 4 speed box for company ignoring running in recommendations and the car was fine for years and never suffered any ill effects. I guess having it as a company car was comfort in the fact that if it had died it would have been replaced so not worth following any guidelines.

Being a stickler for the rules ;) Im going to run it in as per the manual, I dont think the engine needs it but in the event of an issue I dont want Toyota plugging it in and saying "warranty is void as you exceeded 4k rpm on 21 Mar 2023 for 3.2 seconds hitting 5k rpm"... etc etc. It is testing my patience though but luckily its pretty nippy below 4k

It does say "except for emergencies" 😅

Admittedly they told me not to worry about running the engine in on my handover.

But, yeah, I am with you on that one, this is a keeper for me, so I will be sticking to the handbook suggestions.

Babying your car is the wrong move imo, piston rings won't sit right without hitting higher rpm's...
First 100 miles are most important anyway, you need to hit 6k rpm-7k rpm once engine is totally warmed up. Not holding it constant in these zones, but hitting it. Class this as your "emergency" it needs to be done. But you should do this 2-3 times a trip "emergency acceleration"
Engines that remain at 4k will be the bad engines, they will probably use more oil and probably have lower performance, as the pistons won't bed in properly...

But your money, your choice - as always

My personal advice of owning numerous cars and breaking them in... is baby them until they warm (mechanical sympathy) after that... still becareful on run in, but make sure you hit those higher RPM's a few times in the first 100 miles...

Mine been broken and now I'm on 2500 miles and my engine is beautiful, hardly using any oil and I've even had a complete oil change and awaiting oil analysis as we speak.

im on 750 miles now and it's like break-in bingo. I think i've done everything on this list, and more. Mainly kept below 4k RPMs, but pushed above every so often (normally when coming out of a junction and a little trigger happy on the pedal). I've used cruise control which is also a no-no aparently. Once i get to 1000miles i'll up the limit to 6k but certainly be pushing it harder but not too extreme.

About 200 miles of my first 300 miles were on cruise control taking the car up to visit my parents :D
I did vary the speed a bit and do some high rev pulls every so often though. On just over 2000 miles now with no issues or oil use so I'm not too worried.

Had unusual engine behaviour last night

4 hr drive, m1 so cruise control on. Normal engine temps etc. No warning light

About half way home the car was reluctant to rev past 5k, it would but it took time like I was driving a 90hp hatchback in 5th gear. Seemed normal below

Stopped in service station, switched on and off and set off again. Fine after that

Did 770 miles at under 4k rpm, always allowing engine to warm up before tickling the accelerator and avoiding constant speeds on motorways. Now set the rev beeps at 5k. Much more fun, can't wait for the full range to become available.

Yeh with it not being adaptive we still have to turn it off , slow down, speed up and change gears so wasn’t too bothered.

I'm at 800 miles now, I doubt the last 200 will make a significant difference so just awaiting an oil change.

I've done my 1000 miles and started driving normally. Due to difficulties scheduling an oil change with my local dealer it has been a good couple of weeks since and I did another 100 miles.
I'm thinking now, if it is even worth replacing the oil now, the service comes in December and I don't plan driving it in wet, so realistically it can sit garaged from as soon as October. What would you guys do?
Oil change with Toyota is also quite expensive, I think £140 or 170 it was...

I think with availability and me wanting to drive it I think mine was near 2000 miles when I did the run in change but that was back in Feb/March. There's only another month or so of decent weather before Winter grime is in so I'd wait it out.

Great video….

How are we supposed to know what to do with advice like that being the opposite of advice like this:
