I know these are two wildly different cars but I'm stuck between the two.

I gave up hope of getting a GR86 when the first allocation sold out so I got a GRY instead.

Fast forward to today and I just got the request to purchase email from Toyota.

Have any of you made the switch and do you regret it?

Hi mate, I'm doing exactly this but haven't test driven the 86 yet.

This might be of some use to you:

I'm hoping the 86 will be more fun/adjustable at more sensible speeds and will be a bit more livable as a daily as slightly less aggressive chassis setup/doesn't need to go to Toyota every 3k

Hope this helps 👍

Had a GT86 and sold it to my godson when I got my GR Yaris. When the GR86 was launched immediately I ordered one (missed that playful driving of the GT86). Conclution: Both are lovely cars, have to keep them both :).

Thanks that's really helpful.

I remember the GT86 suspension being unforgiving on bad roads so hopefully I'll get to try the GR86 before committing. I've got till Sunday to put down a deposit so I'll be ringing around tomorrow morning for test drives.

That's dream stuff mate. If only my finances allowed me to do this!

Ah yes, this is the optimum solution! If only I could...

I had a GR Yaris for just over a year. I sold it and bought a GT86 to tide me over until my GR86 arrives (still waiting). I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the GT86 so very much looking forward to the GR86. I loved the Yaris, very quick car but to me it didn't feel as special as jumping in an old GT86 and I really enjoy rwd cars. I don't need a quick car as I have bikes and it doesn't need to be practical either.

I'm currently half deciding between the GR86 and a Supra but I'm swaying 86 again.

I like the idea of this but used prices are off putting to me. I had a special edition GT86 that I sold in early 2021 for £16k. I thought I got a decent price then a few months later the dealer sold it for £20k! What's really mental is I bought it as an ex-demo in 2015/16 for £22k. After that I can't stomach the thought of buying another because it'll feel like paying more for a downgraded version of what I had.

If I could only keep 1 it would be the gr86.

It is less usable all year round, my kids don't fit in it as well, it's not as fast point to point, but it just feels more special to drive. The seating position, steering, balance, N/A engine all more natural to me.

The Yaris only gets used now when the weather is bad or I don't know what the roads will be like where I'm going ...at which point it is bloody epic and I absolutely love it! I'm with Fred (y)

Put simply, I enjoy the GRY the least in hot summer weather and long back a bit to the GT86 I had or wonder how it would be to drive the GR86.

Colder and less perfect surface conditions, GRY please.

For me the ride more than anything is spoiling my GR86 experience, maybe its just the roads where we live. We have several roundabouts that have vertical Yellow lines across the road for maybe 400yds before them & I hate going over them in the 86, its horrible!
My FK8 in Sport mode is much more forgiving.
Its reminding me of my MK3 Focus RS which is why I eventually sold it.

This is useful to know - I've read in a couple of places that the ride is meant to be quite supple and is one of the main things attracting me to the car. Definitely something I'll watch out for on the test drive 😬. Will have to hunt down some yellow lines...

Here's my take:
All around effectiveness: GR Yaris
All day long fun: 86
I've had modified prev. gen BRZ for almost 6 years now (still have it !) and I'll always have a soft spot for this platform in my heart - If one wants to learn high performance driving dynamics twins platform will always be a far superior learning tool in my opinion.
If I'd have to keep only one of them It will be Yaris just because It's more useful as daily to me and It's very capable all year long in my climate but If I'd have to keep just one as weekend/fun car It would be 86. Both are great, both have hery different driving characteristics.

For me, the ride is much better in the GR compared to GT, handling speed bumps, yellow lines and pot holes way better. But it may still feel unforgiving compared to other cars. Those yellow caution lines can be hardly noticeable in some cars but shake the doors off your GT86.

So I rang the nearest GR centre and they said they'd normally only let people test drive the GR86 if they've got a car on order.

I did mention I had the email to request a purchase but they said they'd ring me back tomorrow to confirm if I can test drive...

If I can't get a test drive I'll just leave it. I remember trying to test drive an i20n last year and there were no demo models around. The sales reps kept saying "just place an order then test it when it arrives". Fun times.

Try a different dealer? Some have been more flexible about test drives.

And, as I understand it, the supplying dealer does get commission for each GR86 they hand-over. So they should be keen to allow a test drive for you. Its easy ££ for them.

Its still back to front - they will let you test drive when there is no benefit to them (you already ordered) and won't let you when there is a chance of a sale!

Because you can cancel everything, place the order, go for test drive.
It is wasting more time of others (online side of things) than it needs to, but that's their system.

Usually this arrangement goes in place if the ratio "number of joyriders / available cars" skyrockets. Placing a speculative and revocable order at least means that you took some time and (on finance) that your finances cleared, i.e. you're a serious party.

If you have an invitation you should be able to test drive. I’d ring Toyota online up.

Ridiculous if you can’t test drive when you have an invite but the sales guys are taking he demo cars home.
