Having not used my car over the winter, it has been safely tucked up in the garage. Went to give it its first run yesterday, but something seems to be drastically wrong with the brakes, which were fine when I put it away. Anyone else had such a problem? It's for all the world like an horrendously warped disk (but it can't be, of course.) Pedal pulses up and down like crazy, and the car vibrates badly enough to take your fillings out. I suspected a stuck piston in a caliper, but stamping seriously hard on the brake pedal a few times both while stopped and while moving has had no effect. No warning lights or anything either - very bizarre.

Rusty patch either where the pads sat or another spot? Are the rotors clean inside and out? Front or rear? Both pulse the pedal but front wobbles the steering wheel while rear feels like a 7 year old kicking your seat from behind - like a flight from London to Sydney.
Edit: Mk II yours?

Rotors look perfect - all 4 - on the outside, can't see the inside faces of course, but as the outer faces are as new, can't think they'd be different on the inside.. No rusty spots - car put away dry in a dry garage. Much more violent than a rusty spot too. I suspect it's the front.

Edit: Mk2 RS1800 was mine, I built it from a bare shell, many years ago. Long since gone to the great scrapyard in the sky, I suspect.

Sounds like flat spots on the tyres where it’s been stood

No, definitely a brake problem.

Take the pads out and see if there’s a chunk fallen off

There’s a technical bulletin for this happening and will swap the brakes under warranty

Any further info on the tech bulletin?

If it's pulling up evenly when you brake it's unlikely to be a seized caliper.

Were the pads stuck to the discs when you first moved the car?

No, absolutely rolling free.

It’s known by the dealers exact symptoms you say

Parts of the brake pad falls off having been stuck to the disc if parked up wet etc

Speak to your dealer I think it’s BO-00793T-TME

It is. Dealer didn't know anything about it, but found it from that.

Are they going to replace them under warranty?

I believe the part number has been updated for brake pads

I certainly hope so! Apparently the TSB tells them how to claim off Toyota for the work.

By coincidence I think my car has suffered this issue. Was parked up damp after washing the car and then not moved for 6 days. When I moved off I got the clonk (despite handbrake off when it was parked) and car is now making a pulsing noise on light to medium braking. Have driven for 50 or so miles since including some bed in type braking, but it has got no better or worse.

I'm booked in with a dealer (SE Chelmsford) to have the car looked at tomorrow. The info on the tsb above is very helpful and I'm going to take it in with me to the dealer. Can you let me know which fb group that was on as there are quite a few for the gry and I can't find it (interested to see what else was posted there about it).

I had this exact same issue about a year ago just prior to first service, Only on the rear discs, left the car for a few weeks whilst on holiday parked in gear handbrake off under car port, had washed it prior to parking up. Came back to the car which appeared to have brakes fully applied drove it out of drive with a revolving scrapping noise kept applying brakes which did improve, however after several hundred miles a rusty band would not clean up only on both rears. Mentioned it at service and it was booked in for two new rear discs and pads. Not had the issue since, but I now take the car for a short drive to completely dry the brakes out after washing.

Did you get it replaced under warranty (and if so did you have to kick up a fuss), or did you have to pay?
