Exactly, puts the GR on new platform. Of course it was tested in Italy and Australia but Rally2 is another game. Glad if they do this as it boosts up the whole program. And makes the Rally2 series more interesting too. Skoda has been a strong player there for a while, would be nice to see Toyota making a new benchmark there. I see 1+1 forming here with some of the drivers..
 
It'll be great to have a Rally2 car based on our bodyshell - and with the 3cyl engine if they can (as it was given dispensation to run in WRC2 / Rally2 wasn't it?)
 
Wouldn't customer car (private team) make it Rally 3?

Not sure but Rally3 looks like putting more ballast to GR Yaris to reduce the weight/hp ratio.
I don't think how you run the team defines if its Rally2 or 3, different ruleset for car I believe. Rally3 close to old N style?

Maybe the GR Yaris ran in Australia and Italy national series were close to Rally3 reg (don't know by if they were restricted)?

Looks like the redid the rules again 2021, so Rally 2 and 3 aren't the same cars. Unlike WRC2 and WRC3. Cleared that up 👍
 
Here's the technical specs for Rally3

Rally3 requires
- stock turbo to be used, with 30mm restrictor. Min weight 1210kg
- Car must have min 2500 units produced
- engine max 1620cm3, The air/air intercooler must have a maximum core volume V1max of 8.5 dm3
- max 10.5:1 compression ratio
- Almost all engine components need to be stock, flywheel can be lightened by 15%.
- Original camshaft, max 11mm lift
- Gearbox can be changed, 5 gears. Free gear ratios.

its well to GR spec.. looks like a fun class for us mortals.

I think this has been the ambition of Toyota for a long time, but the GR Yaris WRC car and the GR Yaris Rally1 car development meant that there wasn't any resources. I'm assuming here these will be built and developed in Jyväskylä.

I think it fits to their marketing strategy - of course GR has its own agenda and goals, but great if they can also support 'hobby racers'.
I believe it should be profitable business model selling 100k€ GR's with a cage, Motec and nice suspension bits. Too bad it is only 5-speed gear box but nothing is perfect...
 
After Rally Sweden, it kind of struck me how relatively small the gap is between Rally 1 and Rally 2. All the aero and 100-220hp more power, small weight difference and yet the WRC2 is only ~1,5s slower per km.
Don't need so much power to go proper fast?!?

Kalle drove almost best times with no hybrid - so in certain conditions it is not necessarily that much slower.
 
AP4 spec car in Aussie likely close to Rally2 idea - maybe bit more freedom in the regulations but maybe body rules are similar? Haven't done any comparison though.

There was a word that some test might have been run last week and this week in Finland.
 
One of the chaps I talked to recently who works at the engine factory for TGR in Germany said to keep an eye out on Rally2 for the new GR Yaris, so I guess next year they'll be fielding a car with a 3 cylinder.

He also mentioned next year they're still running a 4 cylinder in the Rally1 car.

No reason for them to run the 3 cyl in Rally1, rules don't require the use of a production related engine anyway and current engine is good...
