GR86 Interior quality

No issues with the quality of the interior at all and totally agree with OP.

My only slight frustrations are in the differences between GR products.

Yaris has:
+ Auto dimming rear view mirror
+ Adaptive Cruise
+ Auto rev blip on downshift
+ Side mirrors fold on lock

86 has:
+ Heated seats
+ Central arm rest
+ Blind spot monitoring
- a ton more road noise

All considered the Yaris probably the more comfortable daily... I'm still debating moving it on and trying to keep the 86 as my only car though, as was the original plan 😬

Change your settings to dark mode on the Google Maps app and I find that makes it better on the front screen.

Not sure about pause, but if you push the volume button it mutes the music.

Alternatively, if you’re using Apple Car Play if you press the button bellow. It puts my Apple Music and Google Maps side by side. I just leave it on this and I leave the map showing even if I don’t have a destination set. You can quickly pause music and access the map from there. Not sure what you’re using to play music but worth a shot.

Thanks, dark mode makes maps much more legible.

As for my pausing problem, it's only when playing music/podcasts via USB. Through Android Auto it's better with a pause button on the screen but I'd still prefer a physical button.

I'm sensing some strong new car honeymoon vibes in this thread.

The interior finish is mediocre, I'm sorry it is, I sat in a new Dacia duster the other week, interior felt pretty much on par with the GR86, that is the ultimate budget machine! My 25 year old 200SX was better. It's all bottom end stuff, cheap switchgear, lots of monotone scratchy plastics, 90% of the interior budget clearly went on the seats which are great. Maybe it will be robust like an honest pair of wellies who knows. Fortunately the GR86 has alot of good traits and it's ergonomics are absolutely bang on, but the interior is definitely something you don't brag about to your mates at the pub.

Maybe its just me but no point having an ‘raw’ car, but then have this fancy modern interior it would look out of place in my opinion.

The only thing I would change personally is reduce the number of buttons on the steering wheel and the indicator stalk.

I think its great except the windscreen wipe intensity rotaty thing is set up backwards on mine, wipes less when you turn it higher? Maybe I should see it as wipe period rather than rain intensity?

And the phone connectivity is noticeably less polished than in other cars I’ve had.

Look at the Japanese rally reps from years ago the Suburu STi and Mitsy Evos all the money was spent on the engineering, you were paying for the 4WD, turbo engine, suspension etc the plastics/interior was from the base models plus a nice seat, the GR86 needs to be looked at in the same way. Interior quality might be a bit average but you are paying for the "sporty" bits not the squishy bits. The interior quality is on par with an MX5, that's not saying much though as they went to town on saving weight so everything is flimsy but everything you want to be good is, like the chassis which is where the money went.

Everything you interact with is fine. The only cheaper bits I'd wouldn't mind them being a bit nicer would be vent covers that rattle and the centre console which marks. Old habit of throwing rucksack onto passenger seat has caught it a few times but I've been lucky and sorted it. But there are some carbon options you can get but it's money that doesn't add performance.

What’s the best way to sort marks on the plastics out of interest?

If it's deep there's not much you can do but I used Aerospace 303 which got rid of some glancing marks, plastic to plastic contact leftovers. Feynlab do a plastic trim restorer (I forget the name) but it's got ceramic in it too which is supposed to be good.

That says more about the excellent qualities and value of the Dacias, if anything!

It's probably worth reminding ourselves that we are talking about a £29,995 car folks.

Look at what else costs 30k nowadays, with their little engines and dismal performance.

We have a bespoke sports car with a great engine, fantastic gearbox, limited slip differential, and all the other bits. I'm glad the money went on the important bits.

Japanese performance/sports cars have had fairly basic interiors for ever.

Tootling along on the morning commute, you could say that interior is not the best. But it's functional and has everything I need.
Going for a blast around ones favourite roads, I'm not thinking about the quality of the internal plastics, I'm too engaged in the drive to care about that.

Nope, not having it, we need crushed velvet.

Given how the car has been targeted I get the feeling if Toyota had the same volume numbers as a Dacia/Renault to amortise the GR86 interior cost over, then they would have made the car cheaper and not nicer to touch interior.

Couldn't have put it better myself, your post addresses any perceived issues.

I've only had a 40 minute test drive but I found the interior quality exceeded my expectations.
My initial expectations were based on car reviews I had read which on reflection were to critical.

Without going into detail, I found the interior to be a nice place to be.
