GR86 Phone holder solutions

I'd love to buy the Etsy one (https://www.etsy.com/listing/1218350810/magsafe-phone-mount-2022-toyota-gr86-and)
But 35€ for the android version + 30€ shipping + 25€ customs = 90€ is absolutely ridiculous, anyone know if this is being sold in the EU somewhere?

Yup, true. Expensive. But it was the only thing I could find which actually did what I wanted. Most other phone holders were wireless, so if you wanted to plug the phone in, you'd have to do it yourself, which is a bit of a faff.

As another update, although I did this so I could easily plug the phone in for Android Auto, I have since decided to order Carsifi to try Wireless AA. This doesn't make the phone holder redundant though; it came with a fast charge 12v socket included. If the Carsifi works, I'll re-route the USB cable from the holder, behind the dashboard, to the glovebox and keep it plugged in to the charger. That should give me the best of both worlds - wireless AA for short trips, but for longer trips, I can still quickly and easily drop the phone into the holder and have it fast charge (as wireless AA can be a horrendous battery drain).
I completely agree with your rationale and am not against paying a bit more for a well designed solution especially when there aren't any others like it. But £70 seemed a bit steep for a grip with moulded usb-c cable.

I just wanted to offer an alternative for those who are handy with a 3D printer or something.

Sugru may also be an option for adapting an old phone holder and standard usb-c cable you might have lying around.

Yeah, totally....its times like this I wish I had the skills or a 3D printer to be able to knock somehting up myself. Trust me...I paid that £70 through gritted teeth. It's a well made product but you're right - at the end of the day, it's just a bit of plastic to hold a phone.

That reminds me - I actually have some Sugru stored in my fridge from yeeeears ago.

This is what I use on the family car, and believe it should work well with GR as well:
Amazon product ASIN B07F3X8PXZYes it is a bit of faff plugging the wire in each time, but its not that bad. A black cable of right length is practically invisible in the all black cabin.

Similar to a couple of posts here, Wireless charger/phone holder combo with the Carsifi. Inverted the clasp on the holder so that the weight is supported nicely, and run to the outlet in the glove box.
I don't like things being in my pockets while driving, just getting the phone out the way without taking up the other storage places is really nice. Wallet and keys end up in the door drink storage and I'm away.

Which wireless adapter do you have and how fast can it connect. I got one for the gr but it takes more thank 30seconds to connect so returned it. I am still on the market for a perfect wireless solution

Ill update my post after i drive home with how long it takes to connect,

25seconds from start on to android auto being connected. Auto connects, skips the disclaimer thing even if you dont press anything.

A quick hi-jack question please... rather than start a separate thread can anyone with a car tell me if the USB's are standard or is there a type c in there?
Thanks.

Snap. Mine arrived today. Just tested it (only for a 10 minute journey or so), but it seems pretty slick. There was a couple of disconnects initially while it sorted itself out, but seems okay now. I fiddled with the settings, set the DPI to 103 which gives me the split screen (I'm not sure if this is Coolwalk), and disabled the safety taps thing.

As you said, connection speed seems pretty good....think it took no more than 15 to 20 seconds to connect after the headunit came on - time to put my seatbelt on and adjust my hair. Just need to find a short cable like yours so I can mount it neatly as you have.*

One question - I simply told my phone to connect to the Carsfifi unit via Bluetooth; are you meant to forget the Bluetooth connection to the GR86 head unit as well? Or can they just stay connected in tandem? Doesn't seem to make a difference, but not sure if it's best practice to only have one BT connection to the Carsifi unit.

*EDIT: And just after I posted, I looked deeper into the box and realised they've already supplied 2x short USB leads and sticky pads as well. Nice!
All I need to do now is re-route the Brodit holder directly to the 12v adapter in the glovebox and I should have a good setup - wireless AA, with discreet fast-charge holder for longer drives.

So today... I fitted a Phone mount and cabling... this is universal and will work for anyone. Cost ~ £38 - Which to me is a very fair price.

Requirements:
Magnetic - cable holder - Amazon product ASIN B01DSOU94QCable clips - Amazon product ASIN B09XV34HT9Universal magnetic car mount - Amazon product ASIN B0B9MY1CVDCable - 6ft - Amazon product ASIN B078NR6ZK3
Obviously change the cable to a USB C if you're android.
What I will say is this is the best phone mount I have ever used. I use an Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max. This is a heavy heavy phone. Mine is 0.3 kg with the case. This mount holds it so sturdy. It's actually amazing. The amount of force I need to RIP off the phone from the mount, when mounted in the car, is actually insane.

I doubt your phones are as heavy... this is the heaviest chunky boi phone I have ever had. (side note, this is because the battery is huge, it's so good. Never have to charge it!)
Please see my pictures below. I am very happy with how this has turned out. I hope you guys like it. The magnetic cable allows me to store the cable in a "out of sight" position, and when connected to the phone it simple detaches from the magnetic base and plugs into the phone.
Cables are all routed out of sight of driver side, and minimally invasive to passenger side. a 6ft cable is required, you will not have enough length otherwise.

Thanks to @hsb's design I was able to mock up a cradle for my non-magsafe phone.

The position of it doesn't really work for me so I'll be trying to make some form of dock/sleeve down the side of the armrest instead...

I like the location on this one
Nearly bought it a while back, but I'm pretty sure I want replace the whole head unit now i have had some time with it. And the above would be 1/3 of the cost to that.

I bought a phone holder for the car but its still in the box. Once I connected the CarlinKit 3.0 for my I-Phone it made it redundant.
