Will be looking at getting one. Can anyone recommend a good one? Had used Blackvue for years but it failed a few years ago after being used in quite a few cars.
 
I have Blackvue DR900X's (plus the connectivity module) fitted in my work vans and they seem to work fine.

If you do go for another Blackvue always go for the smallest SD card and buy a larger one yourself as Blackvue pricing on them is silly.
 
Toyota does a hardwired NextBase front and rear dashcam system which is £278 for the parts and £380-400 with installation by the dealer.

Don't think it's that great for the price, but I suppose some people would be tempted for the convenience of having it installed by the dealer before picking up the car.
 
Whatever I get I'll look to install myself. Worst case I'll poke the cable around the window and get it back to a 12v socket as I've done on all past cars but I would like to hard wire it to make it neater

Can the footage be used by police or insurance?

What happens if someone hits you from a side not covered by the cam?

I've currently got a Viofo A129 Pro that i'll be porting over. Any info about how to hard wire (need a spare permanent and ingition switched circuit) much appreciated - might go and trawl the US forums now actually.

To record incidents and provide proof that (hopefully) supports the dashcam owner's lack of fault, but then you know that ;)

Yes. It can be used against you too so that's a consideration.

The angle is wide, some have interior recording too and even if you get T-boned it still establishes context (e.g. you didn't just run a red light).

All in all worth having I think but "dashcam warriors" are the worst and seem to seek out trouble. I know of someone who got a fine and points for a legit overtake on the basis of dashcam footage because the overtakee was "intimidated". I very much don't agree with dobbing in road users for making safe progress.
 
Get one with "parking" feature so that it records if you are unlucky and gets bumped when parked.
Tried nextbase but disappointed, the touchscreen wasn't great and the battery failed very quickly.
Have used transcend and seem to work well.
 
I've got an Viofo A129 currently and have been happy with it, it's lasted 2.5 years so far. Supports parking mode with the hardwire kit too.
 
I've bought a Viofo A119 Mini for mine. Used the A119 v3 in the family car for a number of years without issue.
 
Honestly, I’m thinking of going for the Toyota one just for ease of installation. Could hopefully be done at the same time as my duckbill (by a different technician with wiring experience hopefully). Plus, they look very tidy.
 
All seems a tad pointless to me - if the camera isn't pointing the right away (it can't cover all angles) how much can it help?

Also I'm not sure most people realise - fault is irrelevant! Years ago, a bus took the front off my car. Fault was clearly established as the bus drivers fault and no one disputed this. I still had to register the claim and my insurance still increased dramatically (actually more than a fault claim) as the stats say a no-fault claim makes a fault claim more likely.

A dash cam would've made no difference here.

This thread is for buying advice, not to debate their value and purpose.

No-one's forcing you to buy one?
They can provide evidence for incidents when the car is parked, or the actions of other road users, disprove allegations against you etc.
Even just a record of a fun drive, or naked cyclists riding through a busy town (yes, I have that footage).
Will there be circumstances where it doesn't help? Yes, just like anything else, nothing is 100% but that doesn't make them worthless.
 
Just offering an opinion - like we all have done elsewhere with a heathly debate!
 
I used to run one all the time until my last one failed. I want one more for when it's parked as I don't trust anyone, especially with this car that's going to stand out.
 
Yeah mine is getting one with a parking function. Current car has been dinged one too many times for my liking with not so much as a note!
 
It's worthwhile looking for one that uses a capacitor to provide the power rather than a battery - they tend to last longer in use (capacitor has enough power to finalise the footage before shutting down).
I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of a cheap system I had in my Polestar - for some reason no sound was recorded, probably user error -
